Taviel opened her eyes. Wounds closed up, consciousness returned, she was still weak but alive. She thanked Germain (it was becoming a tradition, sadly), slowly got up and tried to move away from the monster (more instinctively, it was pointless anyway). Taviel did not hear monster's question and did not completely understand, who others are talking to.
Naroth was healed, the roll was how many HP you were healed.
"Yes, I know many of them have gone, but the kobolds you just chased off were left to bring me food." The roper replied. "Now they have run off, and who knows if they will return." The voice sounds glum.
Germain cocks his head at the creature, "They probably won't return, but we could bring you food. We killed several on our way in here and they could certainly keep you fed for some time. Would you allow us a chance to go get that food and bring it? In exchange for some help getting what we wanted here of course."
Toc glances at the creature, "My friend here assumes you prefer eating human bodies. Is this correct, or is there another type of food they were delivering?"

"Maybe if the meat were allowed to spoil a bit, then it would be ok." The roper says thoughtfully. "I think the kobolds kept some meat in a passage down that way." it gestures off into the darkness with its ropes. "There are stairs there, but they have rigged up a curtain I cannot pass." It waves its ropes around, as if thinking. "If you would either remove the curtain, or bring me the meat, I would be set for a while."
Toc says, "Certainly, let us figure out how this curtain works and then attempt to remove it. They kept you here and fed you, so you could act as a guardian for those dragon eggs then?"

"Not guardian so much as caretaker." The roper says, strands rotating again in a way that you would understand means it is thinking. "I was here when they showed up, and they wanted me to stay, so they started bringing me good spoiled meat." The strands continue to swirl. "As for the drakes, they'll behave if I tell them to."
Naroth groggily shakes his head and gets back to his feet, looking around in confusion as to why he is not dead. He looks at Germain with a nod of thanks and then grips his greatsword tighter listening to the conversation. Is that thing really talking and are we making an agreement with it? he thinks.
"It does talk," joined conversation Taviel, forgiving creature (for now) for her min-death. "A caretaker... Pray tell how do you care for dragon eggs?"
Germain moves over to Taviel and puts a hand on her shoulder, pulsing energy through her briefly to sharpen her wits, "I believe our friend here should be the one to work out terms of our arrangement, she is the one who wanted to see these eggs so much after all." Guidance
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Taviel took the hint (or so she thought) and added: "We would love to take care of those eggs from now on. You would not mind, would you? Once we remove that nasty curtain?"
"The eggs?" The roper says, tentacles whirling as it seems to consider this. "I don't care for the eggs, but this cavern. It is my home, where I have lived since before these others came, and plan to live after you all leave here." The strands stop whirling then. "You can do as you like with the eggs, though they would make good meals once cracked open and left to age a bit..."
At the base of these steeply descending steps, a curtain hangs across the passage. It is made from hundreds of heavy leather strips, each about the width of a human hand. The strips are fixed to the ceiling and are long enough to drag on the floor. The curtain extends from wall to wall. The leather comes from a variety of local animals and is badly cured. The curtain is several layers thick with no gaps, so you can’t see through it at all.
"Well now we know why the roper could not get its tentacles past the curtain, which is odd considering the strength of the creature. Before we venture any further should we ask the Roper if we can take a rest here before we move on. As much as I do not like the thought of sleep in this cavern, I will not last another encounter." Naroth says.

Taviel did not feel like arguing (now) and waved toward the curtains "Let's see what we can do there."
