Flint stays within the treeline, trying to use the trees for cover. He moves his position if necessary to keep line of sight on Alaric and stay within 50ft of the cave entrance. Flint grips his hammer and shield tightly, ready to rush to Alaric’s side if necessary.
Beside Eraminus on top of the bluff, Alvara stops and sits on a clear spot on the ground, cross-legged. "I won't be able to use my own senses when I'm using Archie's." Alvara blinks and her senses are replaced with that of the rat's. "I'm in."
Alvara relays what she sees through the rat, "Archie sees a hut on front of the cave. It looks huge through these eyes but I'm sure it's actually smaller. Wait... Alaric is gesturing something... four fingers... two fingers... two fingers... I think he means for two of us to go in the hut and two of us to go inside the tunnel leading into the cave."
Archimedes
Perched on Alaric's shoulder, Archimedes focuses his field of view on Alaric's hands and watches the gesturing.
Archimedes stays still, letting Alaric finish the gesturing. He then scurries down Alaric's side and pant leg to reach the ground. He cautiously steps on to the ground at the mouth of the tunnel, taking care to keep enough distance to not fall into the river. He takes in the sights and sounds of the cave.
(( Since we are all split up, I have put both sides in spoiler based on who other people can see. I believe right now it's Eraminus for Alvara, and Alaric (and perhaps Flint) for Archie.
"Perhaps he is trying to ask how many are in the hut?" Eraminus kneels scanning his surroundings. He felt like if he were to leave her then she would he felt vulnerable.
There is no goblins in the cave that you can see. The shadows and the voices are coming from the hut.
Archie:
As the rat sneaks his way into the tunnel, he sees, just like on the map, rough stone stairs leading to the right, and a narrow ledge leading along the river. Archie smells no goblins in the vicinity, but smells several canines.
Still sensing through Archimedes, Alvara relays the information. "Archie's in the cave. So far Barek's map seems accurate... After entering, there are stairs leading to the right... Archie's going along the river on a ledge, plenty wide for a rat, but might be narrow for us..."
Not accustomed to the stronger sense of smell, Alvara scrunches her nose, "No smell of goblins nearby so seems like the mouth of the cave is clear... but something smells like wet dog... several wet dogs in fact. Hide Archie, hide!"
Archimedes
(( Can Archie tell what direction the canine smell is coming from? He would definitely like to avoid that direction if he can... Let me know if you need another roll ))
At the smell of canines, Archimedes instinctively hides, needing no prompt from Alvara. He makes himself as small as possible along the rocks at the edge of the cave. He sniffs cautiously in an effort to discern the direction the smell is coming from.
Eraminus listens to her, sensing the fear radiating from her and Archie. He placed his hand on her shoulder and softly spoke, "Just proceed carefully once they pass, no rush."
Flint watches as Alaric returns. He quietly moves to Alaric and whispers, “I saw yer hand signals. Maybe best to incapacitate the two in the hut before we move into the cave. I don’t want to get surrounded in the there.”
Flint eyes the distance between where they are and the hut. He shifts his weight slightly and looks at the bottom of his chain mail shirt as it jangles softly. “I don’t think I can get close without giving us away, but I can use magic if I can see them. Maybe a well thrown rock will peak their attention enough to leave the tent and allow us to surprise them in the open?”
Fear subsiding, Alvara continues to relay what Archimedes senses, "It smells like the dogs are on the other side of the stairs after the entrance... I can hear chains rattling too... they're probably tied up... maybe some sort of pet or guard dog for the goblins.... Archie's going to keep going along the river."
Archimedes
Picking up the scent from the stairs and the unmistakable sound of chains, Archimedes continues along the river. The rat creeps stealthily at first, until the smell of canines subsidies and then begins to look around to observe the cave surroundings as the feeling of danger passes.
After the stairs, the ledge leads on another fifteen or twenty feet, and leads to more stairs. At the top, the ledge continues still, going underneath a small bridge five feet above the ledge, and up a steadily climbing path. So far, Barek's map has been accurate. Archie smells several goblins, but none are near.
Alaric nods at Flint's suggestion, "It would be nice to do it quietly so the ones in the cave don't hear an alarm."
He glances to the clifftop, "Let's wait to see what the others find. But when we move, perhaps I get back to the hut...I doubt they'll both leave the guard post. I might be able to take one of them without much sound... and if the other is over here, we can hope the sound doesn't carry."
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Alvara
"Barek's map is accurate so far, the ledge continues with a few sections of stairs going up. It passes under a small bridge that crosses the river and then keeps going up..." Alvara continues relaying, "Archie smells a few goblins, but none nearby so it seems the ledge is at least a little clear."
She is suddenly aware of the time that has passed. She send Archimedes a telepathic note and then comes out of the trance, blinking sharply to get accustomed to her own eyes, ears and nose. No longer connected to the rat's senses, she becomes aware of Eraminus beside her. "You got all that, right? It looks like just the two goblins in the hut for now... some dogs inside and more goblins deeper in the cave. Do you think we should move closer to Flint and Alaric?"
Archimedes
Archimedes hears Alvara's voice in his mind. Keep going, I'll be right back. You're doing great, Archie!
He continues climbing the path along the ledge, continuing to sniff and listen for sounds of goblin activity as he goes.
Eraminus nods and stands up, "Let's regroup and begin to enter the cave, we can at least get closer to Archie before doing some more scouting." He offers her his hand to begin heading down the slope once more.
