(Yes, the door is locked.) As they are discussing the locked door, Tomora suggests, "Well, a strong shoulder...like Serwa's for example...may be just as effective as some thieves tools."
"So you're thinking to try to sneak past the door and go strait for Glasstaff? or the cells?" Tomora asks. Watching Aster pick up the redbrand cloak, she adds, "Yeah, perhaps they wont pay much attention to a couple of people in red cloaks."
"We've already made plenty of noise, beating on these guys down here, but me banging away at this door is going to be like a drum," Serwa says. "If we can't open this door quietly, let's just leave it for now, until we've secured the hostages, at least." Serwa tries to find a red cloak from a person close to her size, and dons it over her armor. "I say we go for the cells. Once we have the hostages secured we've got a lot more freedom in how we approach the rest of it. We were lucky with those goblins that there was a wanna-be second in command lined up, all ready to cut a deal for their hostages. I don't think we can count on that sort of luck happening a second time."
"If we pull this off, we may just have a specialty - hostage crisis adventurers."
"I'm not sure how well a dwarf will pass as Redbrand." Tomora says holding up a red cloak that is much too long for her, "It might be better for me to pass as something smaller...or something that can climb unseen on the ceiling at least. what do you think? Big spider or little spider? I'll only be able to transform one more time."
“Big Spider has more combat utility I assume unless that little spider is extremely poisonous,” Serwa says. “Little Spider seems more tactical. I would say little spider. Less chance the bugbears will get spooked. Although I wish one of them had a bug phobia, heh.-“ Said flatly as ever -“Just don’t turn into a child - that’s my phobia. Stick with bugs and spiders and I’m fine.”
"That is an excellent idea," he agrees. "The Redbrands won't be fooled, you're right, but we can walk right past the beasties And that's all we really need." He collects the remaining cloaks and holds them up, trying to find something short enough for him or Tomora.

Aster will then have a go at the lock Might as well try it. Better to potentially fail and have a backup plan than to go with the noisy approach right away. "Thieves tools" check: 4

Aster - Sorting through your surgical supplies you find something that you could potentially use as an improvised pick. You're lack of knowledge regarding locks quickly becomes apparent as you fiddle with the lock. However, you are able to wedge the narrow blade into the gap between the frame and, after several broken blades, you manage to lift the latch and the door opens. (You succeed! however it consumes one use of your medical kit)
Inside you see racks of weapons lining the walls of this chamber, including spears, swords, crossbows, and bolts. A dozen dirty red cloaks hang from hooks on the far wall.
“Nice haul. I guess you operated on that door pretty well,” Serwa says. “Although now that I’m realizing how similar your surgeon skills are to those of a lockpick, I’m not sure how to feel about that. Grab what you need, everyone. I’ve always had terrible aim, but I’ll take a crossbow just in case.” She takes a crossbow, hoping she doesn’t have occasion to use it. Aster might recall that while she was proficient with archery - and all military weapons - from her time in the military, she is not over stating her dislike for the use of ranged weapons.
I'll take one of those as well. Im all out of magical bolts, so a regular one will have to do. I actually did receive some target practice as well. And dont you worry about my surgical abilities, Serwa. I have yet to leave broken blades inside one of you.
"I'm pretty sure leaving blades in people is one of the top ways to die of infection," Serwa says. She dons her Redbrand cloak disguise, and says, "Tomora knows the way best. We've got a plan and intel. We're much better off than we were before. Let's follow the itsy bitsy spider and make sure some Redbrands die of something other than medical malpractice."
"I don't know, leaving blades in some Redbrands so they'll die of infection sounds good to me," the elf opines. He looks through the cloaks, finding one that actually fits - with a little help. He gives the spears a dismissive glance but then does a double-take. With a look of surprise on his face, he takes one of the spears and leans it toward him, examining its haft. "Is this..." he murmurs. He hefts the spear for a moment. "Lignum vitae," he says, mostly to himself. He pulls it out and looks it up and down and frowns at the speartip. He puts his ear to the haft and taps it with his fingers. Without a word of explanation, he leans it against the wall, pulls the cloak onto his shoulders, then picks up his new prize. "Are we ready to go?"
Xianon - as you turn to leave the small room you notice something odd about the far wall (Passive perception 15). Pulling back the cloaks hanging on the wall, you can make out the well concealed lines of a secret stone door. With a little push it opens slightly and behind it you can see a very narrow passage that descends down about fifteen feet before coming to an end. Another stone door appears to be at the bottom.
The elf frowns, pushing at the wall behind the cloaks. "Hold up," he calls quietly to the others. "I've found something. Another option." He flings the cloaks aside and steps away so the others can see.
"Huh," Serwa says. "Let's see where this goes, first. If nothing else, this is a much better place to stash the bodies and the unconscious Redbrands. I told you we'd make them a crypt down here."
"Well ain't that somethin'. By my reckoning that little passage would put us just about in Glasstaff's chamber. There weren't much in there - a desk, a bed, and a chest is all." Tomora says, "I'm not sure how that fellow would react if we started popping out of the wall..."
If that passage indeed leads to glasstaffs location, then i have an idea. someone goes down the regular way and approaches him while the others surprize him from the secret passage.

"Let's make sure where this goes." The elf slips through the door and quietly makes his way down. If there's a door at the other end of the passage, he'll open it and peek through.

ooc: could aster use some of his surgery equipment he carries as improvised lockpicking tools?

(Sure, you can try, however you would be at disadvantage and not have any proficiency)
Aster will then have a go at the lock

The crossbows are all light crossbows and you find eight quivers of bolts (160 bolts total).
"Well done, Aster. We should remember to pick up some genuine thieves tools in the future."
