I am looking to DM a campaign with four players at 5th level. While I haven’t been a DM on a play by post setting before (for longer than a couple weeks) I very much prefer PbP over in person DMing. I was a DM for a little over a year until deciding to switch to be a player and since then it’s been off an on (since no one wants to DM in my group). I very much prefer in depth story telling and world building over repetitive combat. I challenge players to build their characters with rich backstories that explain and influence their beliefs, values, and decision making. I also expect a certain level of maturity, inclusiveness, and seriousness. To clarify seriousness, I don’t mean “no jokes, no fun” serious, I just want to avoid the play style of “my character wields a magic banana and his best friend is a talking unicorn.”
The campaign will be homebrew and will take place in Wildemount, specifically the Greying Wildlands. I don’t expect players to know everything about the land, I actually prefer a certain level of ignorance in a campaign setting (if you’ve read EGTW I won’t hold it against you). I would only ask for you to read up on the basic things your character would know, i.e., your hometown, known deities, and social structure of the land you reside in. I don’t want this to sound overwhelming, because it could be as simple as “I come from a small fishing village, I worship Raei who inspires goodness and redemption, and my town is ruled by the Uthodurnian diarchy.”
The players will find themselves in the bustling underground city of Uthodurn, with varying influences calling them further North, possibly to the strange land of Eiselcross. Please include why your character would be in Uthodurn, or if you believe your character would not go to Uthodurn, please include why.
To touch on the downsides of PbP, if you’re less active you will naturally have less of an impact on encounters. To try and balance this, I would ask every player to give others a chance to react to situations first if you’ve recently taken the initiative. For example, if the group is challenged and you’re the first to attack, maybe let someone else try to persuade the guards for passage. I will be monitoring this and posting friendly reminders if necessary. I’m excited to run this campaign and I hope to build an exciting environment for players.
Please post or message me the following information if you’re interested in this campaign (if the information is in your character sheet just link the sheet):
Name, Race, Class, Background
A backstory with depth
One or two important NPC’s attached to your characters backstory (see the hero chronicle in EGTW)
What’s the method of stat generation? I understand the importance of character, but if it’s rolling, I would like to know if I can make my character viable.
Backstory: Af Brazenell is a young adult tiefling. He is a cleric of light and healing. He is quite jovial and charismatic socially. Always helping others in any way he can. However, when he is alone he often hear spirits and voices in his head. The voices are whispers but carry some sort of evil energy. This began when he was a teenager. In order for him to tolerate these dark voices, he decided to follow a holy order. He believes that maybe a deity will help the voices stop. And hoping for a deity to hear him, he will heal and guide others even if it risks his life.
NPC known: Head Priestess of the Chantry of Dawn, Cardinal Respa (Unless it's not Critical Role canon let me know)
Goals: To find peace with his inner voice, which he believes its not his own. To achieve peace for others as he searches his own.
Currently in Uthodurn on a pilgrimage for the Chantry of Dawn in Rexxentrum. Establishing places of worship for Pelor.

Kobold beast master ranger (revised if that’s okay) with a giant frog beast companion. Who needs the strength to jump a wall when you can ride in a frog mouth?
As long as Farkan can remember, he’s been quite at home in the mountains of the grey into Wildlands. Often delving into subterranean cave structures as his heritage gives him his advantages in the darkness. It was his willingness to scrape through the tiny crevices and spots that he was able to find the (not so exotic) but unique goods for niche markets. Spider chitin for armor, silk, rare eggs, misses, fungal pods needed for spell crafting and enchanting. Becoming a respected merchant to his clients in Uthodurn. On one such cave dives he found a rather large egg compared to himself. Guarding it closely until it hatched: his companion Rash has followed him loyally ever since. He continues to make runs and deliveries, particularly leathers and hides to sell in Uthodurn.
Works with Deilin - The elven apprentice of Umagorn. He often conducts business with her when selling his wares.
Jedora Frostborn - Dwarven female, she owns a stable and has been nice enough to house Rash when in the city. Farkan may or may not sneak into the stable and rest there as well
In a city with tons of heritage and stories, famed blacksmiths and legends of trade, Farkan wants to carve out his path into the history books.

Name:Rianath Taldaer (character sheet added because I had free time and am super excited about this opportunity)
Race: Elf
Class: Barbarian
Background: Outlander
Backstory: Rianath was born and raised in the city of Uthodurn, the firstborn child to Nalaed (female dwarf) and Soveliss (male elf) Taldaer. As an attalwen, his appearance matches that of his father but his attitude and interests is more like that of his mother. He learned to track and hunt fairly young and took to it almost immediately. One of the more experienced hunters took Rianath under his wing, acting as mentor to him and teaching him what he knew of the wilderness and fighting, and in time became more of an uncle than simply a teacher. He also inspired the young elf with tales of his old adventuring days. Rianath soaked up every tale he could from the older dwarf, and now feels it is his time to leave and make his own tale of adventure.
Important NPCs: Rurik Balderk, male dwarf barbarian and mentor/uncle figure to Rianath.
Character goals:
Character Goal 1: I will befriend a flying beast and ride it through the skies. Others will envy me for the bond I have with this creature.
Character Goal 2: I will speak to a dragon, live to tell the tale, and provoke the dragon's everlasting wrath.
Character Goal 3: I will cleanse the Savalirwood of its corruption while welcoming that corruption into my own body.
He is currently in Uthodurn because it is his home, although he is ready to leave to seek adventure.

Ability scores: 15151013915
Rolled Fateful Moments: received an Alchemy Jug from a Mysterious Stranger (Scout) that saved his life while lost in the wilderness.
Rolled Secret: An old seer once touched my forehead and gave me a vision of a flaming bird chained beneath a mountain, squirming and wailing in the darkness.

Name: Celia
Race: Tiefling
Class: Warlock, The Archfey (Pact of the Cain)
Background: Grinner
A backstory with depth: Born in Port Damali, Bryseis Evenwood was the youngest daughter of Dorn and Arveene Evenwoon. While they never treated her any differently than any of their other children, she always felt like she was the odd one out. Her siblings often shut her out of doing anything they were doing, and Bryseis was left to her own devices. When she turned 18, she fell into the company of the Golden Grin, who didn't seem to mind who she was, though deep down she just wanted to be normal like the rest of her family. While out on a mission for the Grin one day, she found herself lost in the woods. She eventually met a women, who just smiled at her and offered her a deal. She would give her the means to look normal, though it would only be an illusion, unless she could find a way to make it permanent. In return, Bryseis would serve her. She agreed, and the women smiled and granted her a new name. Celia. I'm working on more, this is what I have so far.
One or two important NPC’s attached to your characters backstory (see the hero chronicle in EGTW):
Lureene Evenwood: Celia's oldest sister. She married a minor noble, and became enraged when Celia accidentally learned about her sister's infidelity to her husband before they were married. She's determined to figure out what has her sister so busy these days, even though her friends were few and far between only a few years ago.
Evendur Dundragon: An old half-elf beggar who Celia once gave a large sum of money to in order to help him. As a thank you, he introduced her to the Golden Grin and vouched for her entry into the organization. He doesn't believe his debt to her is paid off quite yet.
Character goals:
Goal #1: I will infiltrate the Myriad, but doing so will compel me to commit evil acts. Goal #2: I will befriend a flying beast and ride it through the skies. Others will envy me for the bond I have with this creature. Goal #3: I will find a way to make the illusions that hide who I truly am permanent.
Why your character is in Uthodurn: Celia was sent to Uthodurn by the Golden Grin, and urged to take the assignment by her patron, though she didn't explain why.
Rolled Fateful Moment gave Rianath an Alchemy Jug, and just in case it's applicable I rolled him a Mysterious Secret and Prophecy (and they end up kind of matching, so that was cool).

Interested, and will get a character together today. Is it ok if we use the hero chronicle to generate a full backstory?

In the forum or on your own you can roll 2 sets of 4d6 minus the lowest number and choose the more preferred result.
You can definitely use the Hero Chronicle. It’s a very useful tool.
Critical Role NPCs are totally fine to use. The Wildemount we’ll be playing in will be without the M9.
