ooc: does anyone else dislike DMs that are slaves to the dice? Doing a different adventure right now and feel the need to vent.
(OOC - Complaining about me already? Haha, kidding. Some DMs do take rolls super serious. When I first started out, I was a stickler for the DC and rolls, but I play it a little more relaxed now. Especially when players give a bit of flare and RP. Plus I had a low level party almost TPK once, that I thought I'd change the DC for a monster ability.)
ooc: No...an online game. My DM handled an encounter in a way that almost guaranteed maximum carnage for the party, even though the party hadn't been stupid, just, as characters, un-knowledgeable. He attacked a group 5 low-level characters with a water elemental (and the decision to attack itself was determined by dice roll), played the water elemental very intelligently, ignored obvious openings to let the party escape...just annoying. I'm all for realism and consequences and stuff but no one likes to lose a character and if I wanted the dice to rule I could play yahtzee :)
So there is a time and place for dice rolls, PbP there are more times for them to not be there. In the other game I DM, some of the PCs walked into quicksand, some of them went all the way under, I made the other PCs make a check to make sure they knew where their allies were at, but not strength checks to pull them out, one person had a high strength, and was getting pulled out by a fighter with a high strength score, they got this, the other one was a halfling getting pulled out by two other people, again no need, now an in person game and I would have had them roll because it only takes seconds, and well if they fail it could be funny if they failed. That situation does sound crazy.
So now let's talk about the roll I just made you slaves to.
Mialee's hum turns from a soft hum to a loud hum, that she then changes into words, Talinian you have to stop helping because you realize that you are not helping her whatsoever. As she is singing Talinian you look and the rune starts to glow, it then expands, slowly starts to spin, then blackness forms behind it, and then finally the rune snuff out. In its place is a small bookshelf. Three shelves high, each with enough space to lay 1 book down on it. Two of the shelves are empty. One shelf has a book on it, you grab it and pull it out, the cover of the book looks to be made of human flesh, on it magically written is the roman numeral 7. You open the book, the first page has some notes written on the top of the page, the seal of Golin and Oriteath on it, the bottom of the page is ripped off, if you were to put the ripped page next to it you would find that it is a match. You open the book and it is a lot like the other book you have from Mayor Raymond, it is an oversized spell scroll. The scripped on the first page reads.
'This is a very dangerous and hard spell. Unlike other Kersaat Pavmas or spell scrolls, this one requires physical components. There also seems to be a scale of failure. I have attempted this spell 3 times, I am a little sick to my stomach due to the physical components needed for the spell, and me acquiring them, but all things in the name of progressing magic. There happens to be 10 attempts left at casting this, maybe in a few years after I have studied even more I might attempt it again.
Maerwynn’
A second inscription reads
‘Maerwynn was insane for trying this spell, the component requirements required of of the devils. The abilities that one could gain over someone they bring back from the dead with this spell is uncalled for. This Kersaat Pavmas is to stay in the low lock box in the High Tower of the Magus ring in the Locked Library at Otten, if found outside of there please bring it back or burn it.
Grand Magus Seers’
Grand Magus is the title given to any member of the Grand Council of Magus’
One last inscription reads
‘Seers’ hypocrisy shows, there were 9 charges left before I was successful in casting this spell. But his point of the components being great was true, I do not know how I will atone for these new sins, perhaps this was the last straw ensuring that I be damned forever. Nonetheless, Hornmaker, my deceased brother, is was completely under my control. He served me well as a personal bodyguard, but he was even more mindless in this form than he was before, and did take the tasks that I gave him too literally, specifics were important. Locking this book away is a wise choice.
Seers does, a bit. You know he was the leader of a war long ago, a little before the start of the God Children wars.
I would say if you want to know about one of the other two let me know which one, if you want to roll it would tell me how much you know about her or him.
Talinian looks at the book, disgusted by it's contents. Those names...did he remember either of them?
"Mia, I would appreciate your assistance again, with that spell, guidance, please. I am trying to remember something about these two names," and he fills her in on the book. "Would you mind casting the spell, please? I think I might have heard about Maerwynn."
Maerwynn was a human female wizard about 10,000 years ago, she helped start up one of the Golin and Oriteath campuses, the Cajacidro campus, which is the main campus in Nobrosia Confederacy. You also happen to remember that is where Seers was from. She ended her life on the right side of things. Not in a war but she was well respected, even turned down joining the Grand Council, to stay at her school.
"Mialee, let's go back to the others. I'll hold onto this book for a bit before turning it over to the Magus, or maybe I'll just destroy it." He briefly tells her about it, and what he remembered about the names. "I suspect Falami used this book to summon Strong as Oak. With it, perhaps we can unsummon him, though I am reluctant to read it. I know I can be trusted with this knowledge, though I am not blind to the arrogance of that statement."
So if you think along the lines that languages are evolving things, this form of elvish is not the current common form. Infact there have been several versions of common elvish sense this form was used. Talinian would know how to read it for the magical aspects of it be trained how, Mia would be able to get a general idea of what the words are but some parts would be confusing, or pronounced incorrectly. The components list is written in common, about 8 different times, each form of common being a little different than the last one.
A real would example would be the evolution of the name Stephen to Steven. The 'V' having not been made when the name Stephen was, now with the letter 'V' some people turn their backs on the old ways. Mix that with an other example which would be words from different areas, so example in America if you say "it's in the trunk" someone will go to the car, but in europe they would go to a suitcase.
Talinian and Mia after resting while Bones and Pietersite worked with Strong as Oak, while you have had a full morning you are not tired. Bones and Pietersite you two would have rested fully enough that you are awake and ready for the day as well. Would you like to meet up in the Tavern and Inn just as a group or at the Museum with the Magus and Glynnis? Or a third location that I can not think of myself.
(OOC - happy to say we would organise to regroup at the tavern or the museum.)
When the others arrive back from the school, Bones leans in and quietly says to Talinian and Mia, "So, what did you learn at the school?" He chuckles to himself as he realises the double meaning behind his query.
ooc: My son has been invited to a soccer program/tryout in Germany this summer. I've created a GoFundMe campaign to help pay for it. Can anyone suggest a place to post it? Could I post the link here?
If there's one thing Talinian has learned over the past months, it is that many people have a hidden agenda. Accordingly, he arranges for the four of them to meet-up at the tavern. Once they are all together, they order their food and drink and Talinian gives the burly server 4 gold. As they eat, he fills them in succinctly on what Mialee and he found at the school. He does not show them the book, but does tell them about it, including the more gruesome components for the spell.
"I believe it was this spell which was used to summon Strong as Oak. I also believe that by studying it I should be able to free him. However, the knowledge in that book is forbidden and so I am reluctant to let anyone else look at it...or even read itmyself," he says with a meaningful look at Bones and a more apologetic one at Mia. "Another option would be to return it to the Magus so he can study it and reverse the summoning. However, if we decide on that route, I think we should see if he can reverse the summoning without it. What do you all think?"
