In the early evening Dillyu offers to go fishing and collect other ingredients from the sea. He asks Oden to join him again and asks "was there something wrong with the quality of food I served on the Wavechaser? I thought I did a good job, but..." and he looks at Gumerawan peeling potatoes on the deck. "Should I offer to help cook? Do you think she would mind? I don't care if she is head chef, I'd follow her lead."
"I thought your cooking was wonderful. We've got a big crew now, so a lot of food to be prepared. I'm sure she wouldn't mind your help. Let's get some fresh seafood to go with those potatoes."
You all get to know some of the new crew you are travelling with. Lonzar (the Triton) is very forward in introducing himself and launches into stories about his people, his glorious battles defending the ocean, his journey to the surface as an emissary of his people, his time spent on ships assisting "the people of the surface" (from some stories it appears he has served on revelry, concord and trade vessels and does not seem to understand that these are not all aligned) and how he came to find out about "the threat from The Elemental Plane of Water, which it is my sworn duty to protect your world from." [Lonzar would actually make a very good Bosan, even better than Firische. They both have the Shipwright Feature: I’ll Patch It!, but Lonzar also has the mending cantrip, has many tool proficiencies, is a skill-monkey and has +6 athletics.]
Gumerawan engaged Lonzar in lengthy conversation....mostly it seems about if he knows any older Tritons who might have hooked up with a human woman from the northern part of the coast about 25 years ago. She is very happy he's coming along and shares her experiences in the Endless Sea with him.

Gumerawan looked up as Dillyu approached, " Pull up a squat, Mr Elf. Dillyu? Yes?"
" I'm a t'inking I was gonna fetch up a big pot of gumbo...but I'm feared I'm not knowin' if its fit to their taste."
Rosan, the new Air Genasi crew member, who disappeared below deck shortly after the ship set sail, returns to the deck with a rather pleased look on his face and a small but very full sack which he moves to the officer's quarters. He then wanders the deck of the ship engaging in polite but light conversation.
Lonzar is momentarily lost for words when Gumerawan asks about tritons hooking up with human women. Rosan, who is/was drinking from what appears to be a wine-pouch as he was walking by, does a spit-take overhearing the question. Lonzar recovers his composure and indicates that Tritons are gentlemen and gentleladies, so they don't usually "hook up" with anyone that they do not intend to marry, nor would they generally talk about it. He indicates that tritons don't usually leave their underwater homes either, and he only left because he was curious about the world above the waves and wanted to be able to tell tales of his adventure there one day when he returns to his underwater home. He indicates he was in the northern part of the coast 25 years earlier and had not met any other tritons around that time. He asks the reason for the question.
Oden, Dillyu and Beatrice dive into the water to the port side at the front of the ship to search for food to supplement the food stores of The Bounty. You almost immediately see that there is a patch of water where some semi-viscous liquid is dispersing and within a few minutes you see the source - there is a group of three merfolk hunting a giant octopus (Beatrice recognises them from stories, Oden and Dillyu from the rare meeting between sea elf and merfolk - who are generally allies). It would appear that the merfolk are more than a match for the giant octopus - Oden, from experience you think that you could take one on alone, though it may take a while - and it is likely the merfolk are hunting it to take back to their settlement as a meal.
Anyone who passes a DC12 nature check (Oden with advantage) knows:
Merfolk tribes and kingdoms span the world, and their people are as varied in color, culture, and outlook as the human races of the surface. Land folk and merfolk rarely meet except by chance, though starry-eyed mariners tell tales of romance with these creatures along the shoals of faraway islands.
Merfolk lack the materials and practical means to forge weapons beneath the waves, to write books and keep lore, or to shape stone to raise buildings and cities. As a result, most live in small hunter-gatherer tribes, each of which holds unique values and creeds. Only occasionally do merfolk unite under the rule of a single leader. They do so to face a common threat or to complete a conquest. Such unifications can be the beginning of undersea kingdoms with dynasties lasting hundreds of years.
Dillyu then spots and points out that there appear to be several other octopi moving in to attack the merfolk, and it is the merfolk who may become the meal. [Yes, I know that octopi hunt alone - but these are giant, aggresive D&D octopi which like to snack on large fish and shredded merfolk.]

Gumerawan smiled gently, " My father was apparently a Triton who used to meet my Mother when she sailed between Palma Flora and the West.....he vanished without knowing that my Mother was with child.....but your words that he would be looking to marry....that means its likely something happened to him...."

"Yes, we should", Oden says, drawing Nénmacil. He switches to Aquan, which carries better underwater. "Watch out, brave hunters, more octopi are coming this way! We offer our aid."

[And back...]
You manage to intercept the two giant octopi, so the merfolk v the other octopus will happen separately. Beatrice and Oden roll initiative (Dillyu will go directly after Oden).
The giant octopi will go together on initiative 4.
The Champion is simply doing his best to absorb and ask questions of those who know sailing and navigating... discretely.
Rosan seems to pick up what The Champion is doing, approaches him and asks in a whisper that somehow carries to The Champion's ear "If you need any specific pointers or help with any problems whilst sailing, let me know. There is a reason that I have earned Jaxon's trust" then under his breath he continues"despite our rocky beginnings, as I'm sure he would have shared with you."

Lonzar's demeanour changes to one of great concern "This is a tragic tale, either for the honour of my people or for your family. I hate to think that a triton met their death or capture not knowing that they had fathered a child and not being able to return to the woman that he loved, but the alternative is that the triton is a scoundrel. I do not believe a triton would abandon someone that they had laid with, well, not unless the other person made clear that they were not interested in anything more... May I ask for your mother's name - purely so I can try and reunite her and this vanished triton of course."

" Kumera....her name is Kumera, she was First Mate on the Lowanna,"
Both Oden and Dillyu hit Giant Octopus 1 and damage it, though it is still in the fight. Beatrice is up. [I'm not doing a battle map for this, it will be theatre of the mind.]

The second Giant Octopus manages to avoid Beatrice's spear.
Giant Octopus 1 whips one of its tentacles out at Oden: Attack: 18 Damage: 12. If it hits, Oden is grappled (escape DC 16) and until the grapple ends, Oden is restrained.
Giant Octopus 2 does the same against Beatrice: Attack: 24 Damage: 11. If it hits, Beatrice is grappled (escape DC 16) and until the grapple ends, Beatrice is restrained.
