"I can be naive but I am not blind or deaf. The Captain surrendered - and was simply killed. I healed her and saw the wound. And if you need bodies - just look around. You are right - my misunderstanding of this world and people in it is my fault, not yours or the world's. I will be more cautious in the future".
"That killing blow was not mine, Laire. I'd like to understand the reason behind it, too." Oden's eyes quickly dart to something or someone behind Laire. "Thank you for healing her. I would have helped myself, had I not believed Vincent to be in danger. For what it's worth, I'd like you to stay. You're a good person, and I'll like that to rub off on me, too."
(I believe Heidi was stabilized but unconscious? Can be counted for a body)
Laire slowly shook her head: "It seems there is a lot I need to learn about this world before I can "stay" anywhere. And you have all the help you might need, no matter what your real plans are. I just can not be part of it."
If she is allowed, she will walk on the Concord's ship.
The nine members of the Moonbeam's crew board the Wavechaser. The boarding party keep their weapons trained on all of you. Dajarkal salutes the one in command and says "Lieutenant Commander!", he salutes her back and they then move off (out of hearing distance unless someone rolls DC22 perception) and they speak in hushed tones for a couple of minutes.
The Lieutenant Commander then yells out to the boarding party "Take Burning Hill, the dwarf and that human (pointing to Kijori) back to the Moonbeam and to the brig." Three Earrings protests that she is not and has never heard of 'Burning Hill' and is an innocent sailor, not a member of the Revelry, and the Lieutenant Commander responds "You will have plenty of time to plead your innocence, save it for your trial."
He then approaches your party with an impatient and stern look on his face (which somewhat belies the flamboyant garb he wears) and says "I am Lieutenant Commander Voskiir Larth of the Clovis Concord. I understand that you lot were a crew with Burning Hill, but then assisted in her capture. As I explained to our green friend over there, crew are usually implicated in the crimes of their captain unless there is evidence that they were not involved. Luckily for all of you, she has provided witness evidence that you have not broken any laws and even assisted some people to escape from the tragedy that befell Flora Isle recently. She has indicated that you are currently hunting the creature that caused the tragedy at Flora Isle, is that correct?"
Beatrice glances at the others, and steps forward. "We are, yes. And we're definitely not aligned with the Revelry, I grew up in the Clovis Concord - my father was a sailor in the Concord! It's nice to meet you, my name's Beatrice." She says, holding her hand out for him to shake.
His mood lightens a little "Well met Beatrice" and he shakes her hand, then continues "Well Beatrice, I have a proposition for you and your crew here which will help you on your mission and help me out as well. I will discuss this in private after we have cleared out this ship of any contraband. If you lot are willing to assist with finding and moving any and all contraband to the Moonweaver, then we will be able to discuss this sooner. Please be aware and don't be offended, but my crew will be watching over your shoulder to make sure that everything is recovered. Oh, and you can pick up your weapons, as long as they remain sheathed during our time together."
Lieutenant Commander Larth orders his men to assist and keep an eye on anyone who wants to make an Investigation check. His crew's combined Investigation check is 9 .
Anyone wanting to help search the ship, make your own investigation check.
If you are trying to keep any item you find, make a Sleight of Hand check, though be aware that there will be a contested Perception (with advantage) check and being caught is likely not to end well for your character or for the group as a whole.
Vincent has never had a hiding place, and isn’t about to start understanding them.
[Hehehe.]
Vincent finds some powder that he is sure is an illicit substance and is about to take it to report it to Larth before Dillyu approaches him and asks why he is carrying his sack of flour, pointing to the writing on the side which says "FLOUR" in several languages including common.
Upon seeing that people have their weapons, Reguh flicks his wand back into his hand from the demiplane where it was held and then searches the ship for contraband and magical items.
As well as what Larth told you, you heard them discuss how effective Dajarkal casting animal messenger to report on the Wavechaser had been. Larth indicates that once again he is surprised at how nobody has suspected the tactic "even with the ring and staff, your efforts at selling the deception are commendable." Dajarkal indicates that she thinks "the trouble at the island" (which it appears she has already reported on) "might be related to the rich guy's missing daughter and other missing ship."
After about half an hour of searching with nothing illicit being found, Reguh spots that one of the daggers in the map that the captain had in her cabin looks slightly odd. He tinkers with it for a moment before there is a click and a section of the floor under the captain's desk pops open. The Concord handler in the room nods her head, impressed, then swiftly goes to the hidden compartment. She pulls out two small shoebox sized crates which are wrapped in cloth, as well as a chest that is around the same size. She starts taking it up stairs, stops and asks Reguh, "do you want to come and see what it is?"
A look of excitement crosses Reguhs face “Of course! Let’s see what Three Earrings was trying so well to hide!” He walks up and gets close enough to see well and to possibly put his hands on whatever is found
Oden keeps what he overheard for himself and helps as much as he can with the search for contraband, but he does a poor job of it, as he keeps thinking back to what happened. He's made bad decisions before, but surely this wasn't one of them.
Reguh follows the Crewperson up to the deck where Larth is taking stock of what has been found. The Crewperson says "Lieutenant Commander, this clever one found a secret compartment in the captain's quarters" and she hands over the three small packages.
Larth unwraps one of the shoe-box sized crates first, revealing a symbol burned into the side (see above), which he looks concerned about. He carefully pries the lid off and inside there is a somewhat unremarkable looking white mineral ore. He unwraps the second small crate, which has the same symbol and he carefully pries the lid off and inside there is a green glass-like substance. Larth shakes his head and mutters "I wonder how they got their hands on these."
Reguh, you can make a DC18 Arcana check to identify what the substances in the boxes are:
One of these is Whitestone, the other is Residuum, both native to Tal'Dorei. Both are rare in Wildemount and their trade is fairly restricted. They are not inherently magical, though they are particularly receptive to arcane energies.
The small chest is locked and Larth says to you "we will have to wait until we are on the Moonbeam with the others before getting to this open. Good find, Mr..." [he leaves this hanging for you to introduce yourself.]
Larth looks impressed that you know what the substances are "Not illegal, though their trade is somewhat restricted along the Coast and it is always worrying when a Revelry pirate has their dirty mits on them, especially when other shady organisations appear to be involved."
Nobody finds anything else terribly exciting stashed away on the ship anywhere, and you and the boarding crew all haul a small amount of each thing you find on board for LC Larth to inspect:
Beatrice with a 3 finds a few crates of plantains - Dillyu purchased these in Brokenbank, they were in the galley area. Beatrice realises she is just hungry.
Vincent with a 3 finds a large sack of flour (as previously mentioned) - Dillyu purchased this in Brokenbank. Vincent was also hungry.
The crew with a 9 finds a couple of barrels of dried tea leaves, a small barrel of tumeric and a few barrels of purple salt, all of which Dillyu confirms were not purchased or used by him. Larth indicates "these were on the ship manifest of the Z.A. Eurus, though are fairly common so are not proof enough that it is the same ship."
Oden with an 11 finds and points out the distinctive tasting barrels of whiskey that they had previously enjoyed and finds some crates full of expensive looking silks and a barrel full of saltpeter. Larth indicates "these were also on the ship manifest of the Z.A. Eurus. That is enough to confirm it, this is the hijacked Zephyr Assimilated ship. Please help us move all the goods across to the Moonbeam for transport back to Port Damali then we can discuss how we can help you and how you can be of service to the Concord."
"I can be naive but I am not blind or deaf. The Captain surrendered - and was simply killed. I healed her and saw the wound. And if you need bodies - just look around. Beatrice will kick her axe back up into her hand, swinging it back over her shoulder as she attempts to find more contraband.
Ed: Beatrice has also never heard of hiding places before, and does not fully understand why people would try to conceal things.
