Kenton goes with the others and assists in whatever tasks they are performing, as he has nothing better to do. As he does so, he will tell them of the sinking of his ship:
It was an attack by a devil of the sea, a mighty witch who summoned sharks to tear the ship apart and rip the bodies of my brave crew into shreds. I was able to defend myself and stay alive, but only barely. If it had not been for brave Firische, my tale might have ended that day. Two days we were adrift in the ocean, two days with the sun beating mercilessly on our heads, and thirst and hunger nipping at our heels, monstrous denizens of the deep circling below no doubt. And then, Lieutenant Commander Larth and his fine vessel arrived to rescue us.
"This sea witch - a Sahuagin?" Oden continues, more for himself: "Three Earrings mentioned witnessing a ship behind sunk by her... and I overheard Dajarkal mentioning a missing ship. If she's the cause of all this...", he refocused on Kenton: "There's going to be a meeting with the Lieutenant Commander after we load the cargo. I think you should be there, too."
Aliez is a small, lithe woman, with long black hair. A pair of circular glasses sit on her nose. She is dressed in a sleeveless shirt, a leather combat skirt, and a white scarf. She notices Kenton and Vincent talking and simply adds to the conversation, "Oh, and she threatened to kill me, and the rest of the group, after I found out she was Revelry." You all get the sense she is stretching the truth a bit on who was threatened.
Larth sees Kenton assisting the Heros of the Isle moving the cargo across to the Moonbeam (as walking past with crates himself) and calls out to you all "Once we are done, assemble on the deck of the Moonbeam."
When you are all finished and gathered on the Moonbeam deck Larth says, "It appears you may have already met, but if not, this is Mr Kenton Tomsen. He is an employee of Zephyr Assimilated, the trading and shipping company whose caravel, the Z.A. Eurus, you have all been crew on since leaving Flora Isle. It appears that a few months back the Eurus was hijacked by Burning Hill and then renamed the Wavechaser and was posing as an independent trade vessel. We believe that any crew that did not escape were slaughtered. The Brand family who own Zephyr Assimilated had asked the Concord to help with trying to find out what happened to the Eurus and return it if found. They also had us searching for the Z.A. Boreas to the West of Bisaft Isle, which is where we found Mr Tomsen here."
He pauses for a second and continues, directing the following at the Heroes of the Isle "The Boreas and Mr Tomsen were searching for the Z.A. Zephyr, the company's flagship, and Ms Elisa Brand, its distinguished captain. I don't have much information on that, though I understand that the Zephyr and Ms Brand have apparently disappeared and are likely not in Menagerie Coast waters or even Wildemount waters. What I do have information on is that while searching for the Zephyr the Boreas was destroyed by a sahuagin wielding worrying powers and Mr Tomson was one of only two crew to survive."
He then turns to Kenton and says "These folk were at Flora Isle when it was attacked by sahuagin and the entire island pulled into the sea. They managed to save dozens of lives and hold back the sahuagin attackers. I don't know about you, but with what you told me about that sahuagin hymn, and other sahuagin displaying this sort of power, I think the attack on your ship and the attack on the isle might be linked. This might not have anything to do with your mission, but knowing Jaxon... I mean, knowing Mr Brand, I think he would want you to check this out. At minimum this is a risk for trade in the area, though it may also be related to the disappearance of the Zephyr."
He turns back to the Heroes of the Isle and says "I also understand - what do you know her by - Dajarkal had promised to assist you with dealing with whatever happened at Flora Isle, and agents of the Concord keep their word. Now I don't want to alarm you, but sahuagin having the power to pluck ships out of the ocean or even drag islands into the sea is not even close to the greatest threat the citizens of the Coast face at the moment, so the Moonbeam can only spare limited resources to: a) look into this sahuagin threat and hopefully deal with it, b) get Mr Tomsen back to Port Damali and c) get the Earus back to Port Damali. My suggestion is that Mr Tomsen joins you and your crew, Dajarkal accompanies you, you deal with this sahuagin called "Salachai" and you return to Port Damali. I take it none of you have an issue with that arrangement?"
Reguh had made himself scarce while there was work to be done and didn’t show up until the meeting. He is a gnome with a wand gripped in his hand at all times. He wears robes adorned with embroidered seashells and other nautical symbols that seem slightly worn with the salt of the sea. He has a well maintained dirty blond beard and a bit of an ever present smirk.
”The more the merrier! I left home looking for adventure, but I have no delusions that it can be done alone. Nice to meet you, by the way!”
"I have no reason to refuse, with Kenton and... Dajarkal to help this could only be easier. But, while I have my reasons to end this threat, some of my companions might not. The pirate promised a reward. How is the Concord, or Zephyr Assimilated, going to compensate us for this job?"
If there is a chance to bring the villain who murdered my crew to justice, then I will gladly take it,Kenton says. I have no authority to promise a particular reward from Jaxon Brand on this matter, but rest assured he is a man of significant means who cares for those who work for him; he will reward you well, no doubt at all. The Brand family is generous to those who work hard and protect their family and their business, as I have learned over the years. He thinks for a moment; This devil no doubt dwells beneath the waves; have you a means of breathing water, so that we can reach her?
Larth's eyes narrow and his tone changes to a less pleasant one "I would hope that "doing the right thing" and helping to protect the Menagerie Coast would be reward enough; though as Mr Tomsen says, Mr Brand may have a reward for you - at least for the return of the Eurus. Take that up with him. We may be able to offer some equipment to encourage success, but that is all. More importantly, what reward did the pirate offer you? I can't imagine Burning Hill doing anything that was not for her own benefit or where she didn't profit herself."
[OOC: Larth will allow the 'Heroes of the Isle' to take 181 (that was supposed to be 'drop the highest', so actually 105gp) worth of equipment from the Moonbeam Armoury if the party are continuing on to Flora Isle. You cannot buy anything else, it is just the amount of gear he believes he can spare. He asks that you are not greedy (don't take all the daggers/darts/crossbow bolts just because they are cheap) and he asks that you leave him with enough 'spare' weapons and armour in case they need them. All his crew still have their armour on and weapons with them, so you can take a reasonable amount that you need without feeling guilty.]
"You can take the moral high ground if you want, but we are putting our live at risk. Are you going to tell me that you and your crew are not compensated for your services to the Concord?" If you have to know, the pirate was offering coins that would have ensured that my siblings, victims of the Palma Flora attack, could start over. As for Burning Hill's motive... I'm not sure I can believe anything she said. She seemed well intended to us, after all."
This being the second time someone second-guesses his motive, Oden is a bit irritated. It has been a long night.
“If I were to hazard a guess,” says Vincent. “I’d say a pirate would be plenty interested in removing hostile creatures from the area of the sunken island to go and rob the dead. She also may have been interested in that rod she believed the sahuagin witch to be carrying.”
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
"What ever her reasons, she wanted us to do her dirty work under the ocean and was willing to pay. The greater good is great and all, but it doesn't fill my belly at the end of the day."
Larth indicates "If you are not wanting to go to Flora Isle, that is no skin off my nose and I'll get one of my agents back sooner. The issue at Flora Isle has been reported back to the mainland and the top brass will send someone if they believe it to be an issue that needs to be dealt with. Again, if you looking for a reward, return the Eurus to Port Damali, Mr Brand will likely reward you. Otherwise we can transport you to the nearest island and I will leave Mr Tomson on the Eurus with a skeleton crew and return to him with some hired sailors. I'm not meaning to be rude, but again there are more serious threats that I have to worry about. If Burning Hill was searching for some treasure and you were going to help her with that, then maybe you should look for it still?"
[He is not going to be persuaded to promise any reward (he doesn't have the authority or inclination to do so) and with the way the conversation is going he seems to be reconsidering letting you access the Moonbeam's Armoury or letting Daajarkal join you.]
"Very well. The sooner we put an end to this threat, the better, so I say we take care of this ourselves, if everyone agrees. Are there any tactical pointer you could give us? What are our chances of approaching the site undetected?"
Remembering Kenton's question, Oden adds: "We've acquired means of breathing underwater from Brokenbank."
Larth responds "Pointers? Well I've never been in a situation too similar to what you will face, though we have fought dangerous foes beneath the water before. I'd suggest you make good use of Dajarkal's ability to communicate with ocean creatures. You are going to have a much easier time having a fish or similar aquatic creature that is endemic to the area locate where the sahuagin is, than if you go in blind. I'd also suggest you leave at least a skeleton crew on board the Eurus while you are facing off against the sahuagin. I don't know what else to tell you except the obvious - try to kill the sahuagin before it gets the chance to kill you. I don't know about your chances of approaching undetected, as that will likely depend on whether there is anyone or anything near the surface keeping an eye out for ships.
[Note: With most of you pitching in with moving cargo and Kenton helping with that, the fight and what has happened since has taken just under an hour. If you skip getting things from the armoury and go back to the Eurus/Wavechaser and rest straight away instead, you will be able to finish the long rest that you all started when you went to bed (and recover any spells, abilities etc.) over the next few hours. If you do that, you can slowly sail the rest of the way, so you can be woken up about half an hour before arriving at the part of Sharkfeather Abyss that Flora Isle sank into.]
I'm glad that's all sorted out, says Kenton cheerily. I should go say farewell to Firische, but I shall join you shortly. My thanks again to you and your crew, Lieutenant Commander,he says, giving a formal bow to Voskiir. I am in your debt, and will be honoured if I can aid you in future.
Kenton says a brief goodbye to the sea elf, thanking her once again for saving his life, and expressing a hope to meet her again one day. Then he boards the Eurus, and keeps watch as the others rest.
"What types of gear do you have that we can use? I think, I myself am all set on weapons and armor so I will return to the ship. Thank you for all your help," Aliez says in an empty thank you as she walks back towards the Wavecrasher. Once there she will take her long rest in an out of the way area. Anyone who walks by her will hear her mumbling in her sleep apologizing to empty air.
"Thanks for that. I hope we meet again, in a less tense situation, Lieutainant-Commander. I'm going back to the ship, I think I have all the equipment I need."
Oden returns to the ship and, if no one wants to discuss anything at this point, meditates just enough to feel rested. He then takes watch duties from Kenton, or joins him if he doesn't need to sleep.
Beatrice, having awkwardly watched the minor altercation, slinks off to the armoury to grab a javelin before finding a clear patch of the deck to finish out her long rest.
