Once they are out of sight, Krusk says to the group, “Guys, I’m not sure why but the rumor about the Calastian Hegemony recruiting mercenaries seems to bother me. I’m not sure why. I just have a bad feeling about it.”
Lia is a beautiful white-blond half-elven female, wearing a set of scale mail armor, with her blond hair currently tied back in a braid to keep it off of her neck in this heat. She has a few daggers clearly sheathed about her person and wears a pack filled with her gear.
Wiping her forehead with a cloth she glances around at the group that is gathering. "I agree, let us get in somewhere where we can get a cold drink and out of this heat for a bit."
In a market ward, near the Merchant's Gate. It stands next to the fine home of a male elf named Lodhere.
The inn is a single storey stone-walled building, with a small fenced yard. A collection of tankards from many lands sits upon a shelf. Accommodations consist of several small rooms with wooden cots.
The innkeeper is a thin female elf named Indinden. She looks to be the type that can hold her own in a fight, and isn't a stranger to violence.
On the Menu:
Stewed Pork and Mushrooms, Tankard of Bitter (13 cp)
Stewed Oxen and Soft Cheese, Tankard of Perry (10 cp)
Stewed Grouse and Dried Artichoke, Tankard of Beer (11 cp)
Boiled Eggs and Soft Cheese, Tankard of Stout (11 cp)
Pickled Veal and Soft Cheese, Tankard of Cider (11 cp)
There are two notable patrons at the bar:
Suaerki Mundison: Male Dwarf Priest, Good. Suaerki is rugged in appearance, with tangled gray hair and large blue eyes. He wears modest garments and a silver holy symbol.
Fira: Female Halfling Merchant, Neutral. Fira is exceptionally beautiful, with blonde hair and light gray eyes. She wears worn clothing and a wide-brimmed hat.
"So's, 'ow wes goin' t' approach 're task? Jes march off inta th' desert wi' nary a care? Oi 'ave ne'er been inna desert afore 'n dinna know the first thin' aboot survivin' there. What aboot 'iring a goide t' 'elp us thru the trackless wastes?"
OCC Vor had 2 gems (100gp) and the jeweled dagger (300gp) so that should good for 1 Dune Crawler. He will buy a standard desert kit, if he can afford it (how much would that cost?)
Indinden, the inn keeper, approaches the party and takes your orders.
"So what brings you lot into town?" she asks with a sidewise smile. She looks over the group and adds. "You look like a motley crew. I'm guessing you aren't hear to pick a fight and get some action like the others in here."
"Can-I-have-the-oxen-please." He lets out an audible sigh of relief after plodding through the short request and then instantly breaks into a huge grin "Osso Common is good?" He asks the innkeeper. "Friend Bilick teached me some more" If he had had teaching, it certainly didn't show in his last sentence
He sits at a table large enough to accommodate the group.
Krusk is fine with splitting the cost of a dune crawler with someone. He orders a number 3, and says to the inn keeper “We’re just passing through. And yeah, we aren’t here for a fight. We’re just gathering supplies and stuff for a journey.” He doesn’t mention anything about the journey, where they’re going, why, or any details. If asked, he says, “Our business is our own.” in a tone that suggests they don’t press.
Chikra will order the eggs and cheese, also keeping conversation light until the waitress leaves. "Depending on how much gear we have to bring along, we could possibly go three to a crawler. I bought a couple of these rain catcher contraptions -- should work to collect dew, too. They're inexpensive, and water's going to be the biggest issue, so I'd suggest everyone buy some. None of the gear I'm looking at is so heavy that we couldn't put three people on at least a couple of the dune crawlers."
"Light weight is probably the best way to go, but I think it would be safer if we planned on 1 to 2 people per beast," Hallanann says in response to Chikra. Meanwhile, Hallanann would have ordered the Stewed Oxen and Soft Cheese, Tankard of Perry (10 cp).
"So, what is the plan from here? The map points out those topographical features that should lead us to the outpost. From what this maps tells us, it should take us two weeks of travel to get there, if all goes well." Hallanann likes to organize this thoughts, and he begins to discuss survival items for the trip. "So, we'll each need food and water for that period of time. Do we know what kinds of predators we might need to watch out for in the desert?"
"I'd rather not be carrying a couple hundred pounds of carrion is all,"Chikra says, a look of disgust on her face, but her tone indicates she's not interested in starting an argument. "Didn't hear much about desert creatures from the few folk that would talk to me."
(Your interpretation of the map is correct, CelticSurfer. Also that's a good question. Some of the locals might be able to help you answer that one.)
Indinden returns with your food. She seems to be in a rather foul mood. "Here you go." She clucks the mugs of ale down on the table, and slops some of the stew when placing them generally near where they should be. However, Chikra somehow got Osso's Oxen, and Osso is looking at eggs and cheese. "Is there anything else I can help you with?" She seems genuinely interested in helping, and not looking forward to leaving, like something is bothering her.
Indinden lets out a sigh. "It's these damn merchants. They travel from here in Shelzar up to Lokil in large numbers for protection. When they come in here they think everything they see can be bought. Pigs. Gosh, I'm sorry to vent on you. Your next round is on me."
"Oh, it's no problem,"Chikra says. She starts to switch her and Osso's plates, then thinks better of doing it in front of the poor waitress. "Protection from what? Man or beast?"
"Lady in trouble? Osso help fix!"He stands as if to run off and fight some imaginary being, but suddenly sits again. However he did swap the plates around and he is now deep into his oxen, with the stew running down his forearms. "But first eat nice meat"He continues to stuff food in his mouth, in a rather uncivilized manner.
Indinden returns after everyone has finished eating and tops off your mugs. "Well," Indinden sighs, "The merchants are leaving in two days at dawn. Let me tell you, I'll be glad to get them out of my hair. They like to take the path north along the desert so they don't have to pay the river toll. Cheep bastards." Indinden nods toward some loud men dressed in expensive clothing at the bar. "They don't give a rats ass about the workers that keep that river dredged. All they care about is themselves and their fancy clothes. If they didn't travel in such a large number I know half a dozen bands of thieves that would rob them blind." She pauses for a bit, and the continues "Is there anything else I can do for you?"

Vor will ask for the #1 Special (Blue Plate?).

Panic is a mechanism that strengthens the gene pool.
((Going by the description, each dune crawler can carry 2 people, so I guess we share to split the costs?))
Hallanann would be perfectly fine with splitting the cost and sharing one.

Lia orders a number 1 and thanks the innkeep. She would wait till they leave to discuss anything further.

Chikra takes a look in the direction the woman came from, to see if there's anything amiss.
