OOC: Sorry for the delay everyone. Family came and took up more time than I thought. Back to normal now.
Uragum sat upon his horse deep in thought for a moment while the others went about to get the lumber. He looked back down the road towards their destination and then to the wagon and finally at the companions. He would have continued down the road but seems the votes had already been cast. Sighing he says, "Well if you're all working on the wheel, I'll at least get a decent meal going." By the time they are done, he's got some sandwiches made and the horses fed.
Arnold is glad to be moving again. Not wanting to see standoffish or anything he looks over to Sylyra, "Sly says we're all clear for as far as he can see."
Eonis keeps an eye on the flanks of the group from her position in the middle of the pack as she rides on with the rest, but given that a long duration of travel is expected she attempts to pace herself, settling into a sort of habitual awareness rather than expending a great deal of nervous energy. The hard work earlier seems to have served a positive purpose, enabling her to relax and settle into the groove of travel a bit. (She relies on passive perception scores during travel, in other words.)

Before night falls, a stiff wind whips up, smelling of rain. Sly has not spotted many travelers throughout the day, nor has he seen a sign of any boat landing as of yet. The sun is an hour from setting, casting an orange glow beneath the overcast sky. The road at this hour has narrowed to a five foot wide dirt track with a hedgerow along one side and scattered trees to the other.
A high pitch yipping accompanied by a rustling of roadside bushes is the only warning you get before a wolf pup runs into the road ahead of you. It is followed a heartbeat later by a second pup that tackles the first in the road. The hedges are ten feet thick and run for forty feet ahead and behind you (counting as difficult terrain and heavily obscuring anything on the opposite side). The trees are narrow, less than one foot thick (providing half cover to something on the opposite side).
The heartwarming roughhousing is broken by the sound of a deep and much louder growling from behind you.
The horses of Arnald, Ola and Jakobe suddenly rear up in panic, having caught the scent of the beast that emerges behind you in the road. Arnald and Ola maintain their seating as they regain control of their mounts, but Jakobe is pitched from his. Clearly not expecting the situation, the hired hand falls backward, straight onto his head and lies motionless upon the ground.
Standing ten feet, opposite you from her wrestling pups, is a wolf larger than any you've ever seen. The biggest of Yovir's horses matches this beast in size. She snarls and growls, back arched upward with her head low to the ground.
Eonis' hand shifts to grip a weapon, but beyond that she makes no immediate movement, focused on keeping her horse calm and surveying the others, and the wolf, to try to gauge whether conflict is inevitable. She has never had much of a natural way with animals, but its obvious enough the wolf is protective of its young. She guesses a lone wolf would not attempt to prey on a large group on horseback, such as theirs, but might lash out if she feels her cubs are threatened. She gives each of the others a quiet look of intense concentration, lingering on Sylyra the longest, as he appeared to find more edification in speaking to animals than people previously. She simply says, "You can calm this beast, yes? If not, I will be ready."
Ola calmed down her horse enough to get down. Less intimidating for the wolf, but she was not about to fight the animal (or would it more correct to call it a monster?) from the horseback anyway. And right now her attention was on Jakobe. Not loosing the reins, she moved to the man and softly touched him. (Lay on Hands for 5 points) If the mule is still around, she would pick up his reins too.
In calming his mount, Arnald slides out of the saddle. With the horse and some of the others between him and the mamma wolf, Arnald very slowly pulled out an arrow and nocked it holding just enough tension on it to keep anything from shifting but not raising the bow to where the wolf could see it yet.
Hearing Sylyra cast his spell, Arnald waits patiently (readies an action, if the wolf attacks, so will Arnald)

Dire Wolf WIS Save: 2 Ola Animal Handling: 21
The beast makes no sign of acknowledging Sylyra's spell. In response to his words, the large wolf growls again, taking a few steps forward. It does not make a move to attack, but neither does it back down.
Ola moves quickly to Jakobe's side, but the divine healing that she sends to him finds no life force to target. Jakobe's fall has killed him. She is able to keep the mule calm, however, pulling it still with the reins. It shuffles anxiously, but does not flee.
DM: Just making sure you remember that Sylyra can be understood by the animals even if they’re not charmed.
Sylyra all but curses as he feels his spell fall flat, but he refrains from exhibiting any strong emotion. Instead he turns toward the pups and attempts the spell on the two of them.
Animal friendship at 1st level (targeting both pups)
He says to the little ones, “Go to your mother, little ones. Run by us and past her up the path to safety.”
In a very soft and monotone voice Arnald speaks up, "Let's everyone slowly move to the side of the road with the trees. Give mamma here plenty of room to get by."
In a very soft and monotone voice Arnald speaks up, "Let's everyone slowly move to the side of the road with the trees. Give mamma here plenty of room to get by."
Eonis follows Arnald's instructions, careful to do so at such an angle that she is the first between the largest wolf and the rest of the group, with the exception of Sylyra who is likely more front and center in his socialization efforts. She cautiously readies her shield, and grips not the Warhammer, but the Quarterstaff, holding it one handed, ready at her side. (ie she is trying to be the first it would approach if it turns hostile)
Uragum nods to Arnold and moves his horse aside. He locks eyes with the wolf and lowers his head slightly. "Id like not to harm such a creature if possible."
Though she does not have much experience with taming wild beasts, she attempts to observe its movement and intuit its intent, so that if the wolf springs to attack, she will not be unready. Weapon and shield ready, Eonis waits, the seconds lengthening as she feels the pull of the Red Knight's strategy on her mind, resisting the urge to fall into the abstract mode of thinking, and allow Sylyra to disarm the situation, if possible, without violence.
"Why not feed Jakobe's body to her, while we are on it?" Sarcasm probably fall flat but Ola did not think about what the impression she is leaving. She looked at the wolf, judging the strength of the creature. No, she was not going to attack (though ready to defend herself), but she was not going to play omega wolf on the wrong territory either. She wrapped the reins of her horse and the mule around her wrist, and tried to move Jakobe to the side of the road, apparently, alone on the task.
Normally overly verbose, Eonis contributes nothing verbally, appearing to ignore Ola, to ignore Jakobe's death, to ignore Sylyra, just standing very still and observant, only shifting her footing slightly a few inches in the dirt as she tenses and relaxes her muscle in anticipation of conflict. The wolf is the only thing she has eyes or ears for, at present. She waits for it to speak its intentions.
Sylyra Animal Handling (Advantage-Speech of the Woods): 7 Dire Wolf Pup WIS Save: 12 Dire Wolf Pup WIS Save: 9
After some more wrestling, the two wolf pups gaze up at Sylyra one by one, enchanted by the druidic magic. The pair bolt off of the road, back into the brush, still playfully tackling one another as they return to their mother.
The larger dire wolf huffs contentedly, but remains in place, staring down the party until the road has been cleared. Ola is the last to move away, struggling to drag not only Jakobe's body, but also a horse and mule at the same time.
With one final growl, the dire wolf turns away and leaps into the brush, leading the pups away from the Iron Route.
The road ahead is clear, but night has fallen, and the hour to camp draws near.
OOC: Each character has received 40 XP for successfully avoiding conflict with the dire wolf.
Only after the standoff has ended does Eonis loosen her grip on weapon and shield, and survey the group. She now goes to aid Ola with Jakobe, dismounting from her own horse briefly. "The poor man, how truly sad. Had you worked with him before? Jakobe seemed like a good man, honest and hard working. Do you know if he had people back in Phlan who will need to be notified? Did he worship any particular god, to your knowledge? I can perform a brief ceremony, here and now, but he is certainly beyond my ability to heal."
Arnald, upon hearing of Jakobe's death, frowns in thought for a moment. "I'm saddened at the lose of the man, but we should get going. We need to camp soon and I'd rather it not be in the middle of the road near some dire wolves. Ola, do you need assistance tying Jakobe to his mount?"
