OOC: The sun is close to setting and time is running low to build defenses. Is there a different solution to the palisade wall, or is everyone ready to return to the barn and take positions? Let me know, and I'll advance to night-time once defenses are done.
"You won't give us wood, what about the fishing nets? Can we use them?" Uragum asks. "We could lay them upon the ground or hand them from the trees, without harming them, and then ensare those that would attack and if it doesn't happen then we just roll them back up and replace them."
At Uragum's suggestion, the crones and Ulburto look to Warsh. Once he realizes the eyes are upon him, he shrugs, "No harm 'n that one. If it don't work, I can still use 'em."
A crone follows, "Then that is acceptable." Warsh leads you back to the landing through the whipping wind and rain and opens the shed and begins the work of untangling the bulky, large fishing nets that lie within among rope and other trading gear.
OOC: Both of Uragum's suggestions are definitely possible within the timeframe left before nightfall. Do you prefer to use the nets from above, lay them on the ground in a specific area, or a mixture of both?
"Let us go with the classic of having them on the ground and stringing them so they lift the attackers upwards," Uragum says. He then helps with getting everything set up.
Somewhere in the night sky above the thunderclouds, Selune has raised an old moon: A slim, fading crescent. In the wind and rain, its light is lost to you. However, the darkness is ripe for camouflaging the island's nets around the village, leveraging any place that the nets can be tied to a higher perch to string up anyone caught within. The Folk, satisfied that their trees are safe, retire for the night, though there are still watchful eyes upon you from cracked doorways.
Through the sheets of water, a pale glow and swirl of fog seemingly unaffected by the storm approach the landing. Screams of the damned ride the wind.
OOC: Arnald is perched atop the barn while Sly circles the Dark Wood. Elisande is inside the barn with the horses and goats, and since it seems we may have lost Izraal, Eonis will be inside with her for the time being (upcoming encounters have been balanced without counting Eonis).
Where are Ola, Sylyra, and Uragum when the nets have been laid out and night falls?
(Everyone is by the barn. Unless someone wants to stay on the roof with Arnald, Ola would suggest the normal guarding shifts, so others can rest inside, while one is watching out (two, with Arnald))
Sylyra is in the barn waiting for word of danger from his woodland scouts. He's also trying to get the blind goat to talk to him using his own Speech of the Woods.
The moon is fully hidden behind the clouds, and the rain has become a heavy downpour. The sound of crashing waves is louder even than the falling rain. After an hour of waiting, the outside has become completely dark; Sylyra, being the only one with darkvision, is the one member of the party that has not been rendered blind.
The storm is raging. Words cannot be heard coherently without shouting, and even then they only carry clearly for a few feet before disappearing into the thunder and falling rain. Above the din, however, the screech of Arnald's hawk warns of an impending arrival.
For Sylyra:
Despite your efforts, the blind goat simply will not speak. It never relents in its gaze, however, staring at you through your speech with its milky eyes.
Uragum remains close to the barn with the others. In preparation he has already cast mage armor on himself. His foot taps rapidly as he awaits the action. He had mixed feelings overall. He hoped they were right and had picked the correct spot, but he hoped they were wrong so that these people didn't become injured or killed.
At first Sylyra cannot see anything past the torrential rain, but a sudden burst of flame lights the area, highlighting dozens of hunched forms shambling through the storm. Some have already reached the village across the island, while others move slowly from the landing toward the barn and other areas of the island, a mere fifty feet away from the doors by this point. Most of the forms are small, the size of human children, while a few are taller.
OOC: Ola, Arnald, and Uragum are still [Tooltip Not Found] without a light source.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Sylyra heads for the nearest hunched forms, yelling, "Stay calm!" to the animals within the barn. As he walks, he clasps his staff in both hands, filling the wood with magic. Once he's within range, he begins waving one hand in an intricate maneuver. A shard of ice quickly forms in front of the elf, defying the rain falling around him. With a final flick of his wrist, the shard is propelled toward the center of the approaching danger.
Movement: 15 feet outside the barn
Action: ice knife attack vs. the center of the creatures: 10, damage: 6 piercing damage. The target and any creatures within five feet of it need to roll DEX 14 or sustain 2 cold damage
As the rain starts to fall Arnald realizes he's made a major mistake. "Shit, now my bow string is all wet. How am I suppose to hit anything with a wet bowstring." While he's complaining about that he realizes that with the storm he has zero visibility. He pulls out a torch and tinderbox and starts trying to shed some light on the subject. While attempting to light the torch he continues complaining to himself "Lovely! Can't see, can't shoot, can't think evidently. I should have planned this better. Thought I was so smart climbing up on the barn. Should have went inside like a sane person. Should have had some lit torches placed around the area, too. Ugh!"
OOC: DM, can Arnald light a torch in the middle of a storm? If so, he lights 3 and tosses two out toward the area where the party expected trouble to come from and he keeps one on the barn roof a little ways to the side of himself.
The darkness was very annoying, but it could not be helped. Ola tried something she was both eager and afraid to try. If Uragum's torch was enough to see, Ola sent an invisible in that blackness bolt of force toward the closest of attackers: Attack: 6 Damage: 6 (if we all are blind - second attack roll for disadvantage: 18 )
Small Undead: 6 Small Undead: 18 Small Undead: 7 Small Undead: 14 Small Undead: 20 Small Undead: 11 Medium Undead: 15 Medium Undead: 5 Average: 10.11
OOC: A torch can be lit (at least temporarily) through the rain, but because initiative has begun, Arnald will only have enough time to light a single torch for now. I will assume that he is throwing it out toward the area where the nets are just to keep us moving.

Arnald's fallen torchlight reveals the cluster of shambling creatures in full. Covered in dirt, they move with a surprising quickness. Their screams are hellish and high-pitched, and two of them glow in spectral fashion as they turn; a shard of ice, the handiwork of Sylyra, crashes into one and tears it apart from the inside. The second glowing creature rolls away from the explosion, dodging Ola's bolt in the process.
Nearly half of the creatures move toward the village, where shouts and sounds of combat can be heard, but the attacks cause seven of the remaining creatures to move toward the barn. Uragum finishes lighting a torch just in time to see the charge of the two taller creatures. Wielding rusty scimitars above their heads, they rush like bulls toward the door of the barn as a hail of stones flies in from the smaller creatures, two skipping off of Sylyra and Uragum painfully. The larger creatures are pressing in quickly on Sylyra and Ola.
From the village, a ghastly shout can be heard above the rain. "Xichtus!" precedes another fiery eruption near one of the ruined hovels, and for a brief second, the fight there can be seen in full. Ulburto leads a haggard defense, tearing through an undead skull with his axe.
