'Considering our last encounter, I'm not too keen on just barrelling down on them when they got us two to one. They seem to want to get in, might as well wait and see why.'
Kalgren turned his head slightly to whisper to Oriander. 'Unless that gate is the doorway to something special?'He asked.
Oriander shakes his head. "...I don' know what coul' be past there."
As the party deliberates, the "two-headed" one slithers to the side and beats one of its crested appendages against the door. Solid, no sign of metal. It then seemingly looks towards the party! ...But it makes no motion on whether or not it sees them... After a moment, the creatures seem to stop what they are doing and slither off... into a side tunnel that was just barely shrouded in the dark (...err... dim light). Have they given up?

"Hmmm. Don’t like that. It feels like they know there being followed and their just leading us in an ambush." Vigil attempts to see what the creatures managed to carve on the doorway without moving from his location.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Zack nods, "Perhaps, or maybe something else. Perhaps we can keep them at bay a little with some light so that we can look closer at what they were attempting to work at." And he brings out his driftglobe and causes it to emit light, and makes his way cautiously forward, watching for an ambush (Perception: 10).
(OOC - yeah the dice roller can be super harsh D: )
As far as the two of you can tell working together, they were just trying to dig their way through the door. Nothing of value can be discerned from their (very very shallow) scratches on the otherwise smooth stone of the gate.
However, as Zack comes closer, the stone does seem to react, and the scratches left by the creatures seem to... "heal" almost, the damage flaking off into dust. Is that... a property of the stone, or did something else cause it?

Kalgren looked on as Zack shone a light on the surrounding stone.
'What the?'He said in a soft voice. 'Self-repairing stone? Ooh, I know a couple of dwarves who would give half their beard for that.'
He left the hiding spot and joined the other two near the door. 'Is it alive?' He asked. He inspected the door a bit closer, tapping and prodding it with his fingers and rod. 'Or just magical?'
He traced vaguely remembered security sigils on the door with his index finger. 'The latter would explain why using brute force wouldn't make it budge, probably needs the proper keyword or phrase to open it.'
As Kalgren mentions a password or phrase, Vigil turns to Oriander. "Can’t believe I’m asking this. Any of those limericks about Mother Mouth you think could help open this door?"
Zack chuckles at the comment about the dwarves, "I'm sure there'd be a few princes and kings that would love a wall that repairs itself too. It is curious though," he leans in to look over the wall as well.
(DM - not sure if you want to just apply advantage to Kalgren's investigation and arcana rolls, or have me roll my own?)
"Good thinking, Vigil," Zack nods as he continues to look over the door, "I've heard many a tale of words or phrases holding shut doors and locks. Any interesting trick, but handy nevertheless."
(With the helping, Kalgren, go ahead and reroll that Arcana check. But in the meantime, while we await that, the question will be answered.)
Oriander digs into his memory deep, brows furrowed hard. He then gives a little nod. "...A door that flows and yet stands firm, holding fast and yet warm. When light adrift is held up, shone... Say a prayer, and remember home."

The stone is simply magical stone, perhaps put in place by the goliaths' ancestors. Based on what has been seen so far, it regenerates, and the tracing of sigils indicates that it is "natural" in origin: as in, no Outer Plane magic of good or ill affected it.

"Well, we have the light adrift," Zack says as he points to the drift globe. "A prayer and remember home though? That I'm not certain. There are plenty of prayers in the world, but which one?"
"Prayer, huh? Does that ring any bells Holy man?", asks Vigil to Kalgren.
'Prayer?' Kalgren cocked an eye. 'Yeah sure, let me recite the thousands upon thousands of prayers known to man.'
He held his chin in one hand and tapped his philtrum. 'Depends on how you want the prayer to intersect with home. There are prayers to bless a home, to ward it. Other prayers are for a safe journey home or to wish someone else a safe journey home. To consecrate a place to be your new home and so forth.'
He started pacing, as he was want to do when thinking. 'Considering where we are, that being Mother Mouth, and, what was it you said, Oriander?'He stopped for a brief moment to address the goliath. 'Worlds past may be found within the Mother Mouth, for it is where we all came.'
He paused his pacing. 'If we all came from here yet have to remember home, our actual home, and multiple worlds are to be found within and it requires a keyword or phrase...'
Kalgren snapped his fingers. 'I'm just spitballing here but does that not sound like a teleportation gate?'
He walked up to the stone door and laid his hand upon it. 'I wish to return from whence I came, where Amounator's warm light shines ever so bright.' He pictured his room at the monastery while reciting the words, the latter part a variation of a common idiom among his order to denote home.
There is a shudder that runs through the stone of the door. And after a moment, there is a rumble and a creak. A light then shines through the middle of the door, a soft warm glow much like that of the morning sun. But it does not yet open.
Meanwhile, the others are able to hear the slithering... it seems that the creatures had not left... but are instead waiting.
(darn y'all's high passive perceptions lol)

At first, Vigil is impressed. Like most skeptics being proven wrong, he watches incredulously as Kalgren’s plan seem to work.
Then, he hears the creatures coming back around.
They we’re waiting. They knew we were here and waited for us to open the door for them. Clever scum.
He turns around, his weapon already in his hand. He bites down on his thumb and lets a trickle of blood run down on his blade. He recites the same dark incantation as before and the blade suddenly bursts into flame.

Zack turns to face out, readying himself for the creatures, but says out loud at the door, "While no bright lights shine in my home, I'd very much love the comfort of my office back home."
