I don't know if it hurts Sam when you hit the thing that 'ate' him. So, now that you've asked, I'm thinking yes, for ranged piercing and aoe, but ask about a specific case and I might change my mind. I'd have to say probably also a shotgun ... probably.
After further consideration, I have decided that, (at the expense of verisimilitude,) attacks on the monster will uniformly not damage anyone engulfed by it, however AoEs still will. This is, I think, more a question of mechanics than story telling, though I generally try to interweave the two.
Shutorn is at J-13. He takes a small glob of butter out of his pouch and flings it at the mound's feet (intersection of E9, E10, G9, and G10), casting grease. DC 15 Dex save.

Oops. I do have that in my notes, forgot to move him on the map.
Last round you took 29 damage from the plant plus either 9 or 18 from the lizard based on a Dex save result that you have to roll. Looking at your character sheet, you will be at 0hp unless you make the save (DC12). Then at the start of this turn you need a Con save. Also note that being blinded you have stagger on attacks.

As Huarache moves out of the mounds reach it takes a swipe at him 15 (disadvantage) for 13.
The mound, having eaten it's full and not wishing to take any further damage disengages and moves 20ft West toward the lizard, who moves to G3 and shocks the mound to heal 12 hp.

Huarache's moving to I5, again letting Echo react to impose disadvantage on attacks of opportunity. Huarache will fire on the final shocker lizard, and if it dies, then he will shoot at the shambling mound and shout, "Let go of the bigger lizard!"
Attack: 18 Damage: 12
Attack: 14 Damage: 19
He will cast Branding Smite on his second attack iff the first attack takes out the final shocker lizard. (Radiant: 6 damage).
Echo does have an action, so she's moving not out of the SM's range but close enough to Huarache that she can impose disadvantage if the mound takes an AoO, and while she's at it, she will FER the mound.

(Reminder that getting up from prone would use half of the mound's movement, so that might affect the placement of it and the lizard, but I don't think it would change anyone's actions.)
Dorian will cast Magnify Gravity at second level, targeting both the lizard and the mound. DC 15 CON save, or 14 force damage, and movement halved. Half damage only if they save. His owl will help anyone trying to attack the mound.

Hurache's blast eliminates the lady socket lizard.
As Samogri wriggles and writhes within the tangled mass of vegetation, he struggles to bite his way fee, but his jaws find no purchase. Huarache, Echo and Shutorn, meanwhile deal massive damage to the moving shrub as it attempts to abscond with their ally, though it's lost much of its foliage.

A sniper rifle has a bullet with your name on it. A shotgun or blunderbuss is "to whom it may concern."

The first attack on Shocker lizard 2 hits hard, but not quite hard enough to take it out. Dorian's chill touch, however, manages to knock him out.
The mound is inscrutable, but clearly still viable at the moment.
{Will wait until morning to see if Tel, Sam and Shutorn get posts up}

No response from Tel. Initiating default action.
T(G10)v.SM 18 for 11
Tel whacks the swampy thing with a sheleleigh smack that snaps branches and sends vines and flying.

Shutorn hits the mound with another up-cast magic missile: 16 force damage.

Players yet to act: Tel, Leann.
Con save: 8
Edit: mound movement was 10ft last round, not 20.
Leann moves in to strike at the shambling mound once again...
booming blade
To hit: 15
Damage: 11
If it moves before her next turn it takes an additional 12 thunder.
