<Ok. I've thought about it and I'm just going to let it do what it does. The black sphere. It's a rip in the multiverse. The thing is, it can be manipulated to move by the will of a nearby creature. So, what are the specifics? Well, if two people are trying to control it, there's actually a mechanic for this that goes all the way back to first edition. It becomes a contest, but if neither of you actually make the DC to control it, the sphere moves toward one creature, predetermined by their Stats.>
So, if Ana says she wishes to join in, go ahead and roll and we'll see what we get.
I was really debating all of this because that assisted roll would succeed, So, I was considering just letting it be a success, despite the stated intent of merely assessing what it is. Its history in Forgotten Realms is a bit more fleshed out, but historically that is the future relative to now, and to the very beat of my knowledge, nobody but Acererack in this moment can bring about this thing and it may be totally unique in the multiverse and the assumption Acererack makes is that even people who know plenty about the lich himself will have no idea that such a thing even exists even as they state it I'm the face, so I can't reasonably say an arcana check with bits if lore could apply. That is why i chose to interpret that arcana skill as helping see that something is off sith the weave of magic on the local area, and this thing is the cause, and through that action. Control of it could potentially be established. I was just trying to lead you to it.
(The thing is, neither one of us was trying to control it, just identify what it is. Merely looking at it, talking about it, and trying to figure out what it is should not IMO count as trying to control it. Also shouldn't it be stationary if not controlled...?)
I think its kind of anticlimactic to see a rolled 30 and the effect is 'you don't know what it is' when you made the right check to possess a powerful legendary artifact. If i heard a compelling reason how the synergy of two minds worked to unravel the mysteries of the universe, I might have just decided it was good enough to work. This is like getting all the chaos emeralds and going Super Sonic. It's intended by the designer as very difficult to do and effectively turns bosses into putty. I think it would be cool for that to happen. The alternative is really just try not to get sucked into a black hole
As for motion, the general character of the object is that it is motionless, but as written in his adventure, it begins once Tarnhem is freed by roaming the halls of the tomb at random, specifically following the corridors rather than disintegrating walls as it passes through them, suggesting it us somehow programmed by Acererak and or Moghaddam for this purpose.
Meanwhile, Creep attempts to have a quality conversation with Logan regarding the unexplainable mysteries of the multi-verse and asks him if he can do anything about the current situation.
"Moghaddam is an extraordinarily genius artificer, just look at this sphere! I personally think that we should not let Tarnhem slaughter him ruthlessly, it will be a waste of innovative mind."
(Well if Tetrevess can take command of it he would, but the intention here was just to know what it is. I know what it is, I actually had a 3.5 wizard who carried one in a portable hole for months (before that had a chance of failure) with the talisman of the sphere to use in defeating Kyuss in an age of worms campaign- he tried to keep it as a secret weapon but kyuss found out about it and destroyed it in the final battle with his agents wielding rods of cancellation. Pretty epic. We still won but it was a lot harder than it would have been with the sphere).

(@DM, Creep wants to expend a charge of the mechanical guide to see what happens.)
Logan whirls and sparks, then rhe ro whooshing out in all directions and reassembled, collapsing back into place. Tarnhem still stands before Pentival, but he looks a bit stronger than he did a moment ago. Tarnehm asks the half-dragon "I await your decision."
The paladin replies: "No good can come from making deals with devils" and charges the balor, cleaving with longsword hekd aloft in the grip of both hands.
18 for 10
20 for 4
Tarnhem answers in kind, punishing the devout dragsnoid with a fist of retribution.
Pentival takes another 10 fire damage when his sword strikes the balor, sending a plume of embers drom the winged creatures flesh, showering the paladin in glowing motes of pain.
((Is Ana still hidden? I think I rolled awhile back but want to make sure.))
Having absolutely zero skin in the game, Ana observed the fight between the paladin and the demon. One or the other would win, her money was on the balor, and they might deal with the victor - one way or the other. She drew an arrow but left the bowstring loose, ready to shoot when the time came.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Creep will attempt to grapple the black sphere using an improvised weapon (Grappling Hook) while hurling the metallic gear at the unidentified object; after spinning the rope multiple times to overcome the friction.
In response to Tetrevess' arcane efforts, the sphere moves 10ft closer to him.
Gravity's grapple hook vanishes on contact with the black sphere, the shortened rope falls to the floor.
A jeweled skull floats through the entrance into the tomb. The voice from it sounds familiar. "What I'd happening here?! There's a hole in the roof of the tomb. A lesser architect would see it as a setback, but I was eager to ombre the opportunity to rebuild, better than than the first. But this?" This will not do. Get it back in there while I summon Tuerney." The skull directs
"Boss Moghaddam, the plan to rebuild the ritual chamber must be postponed. You see, you need to deal with a vengeful balor first"- Creep will suggest and cast Prestidigitation on the eye sockets of the skull to create a blindfold designed in the form of cyberpunk sunglasses...metallic, shiny and studded with spectral jewels so that the architect fails to see their movement. Finally, she will fly towards the control room to examine the current state of the half-dragon.
"The pair of sunglasses is exclusively forged for your inconvenience, Sir."

Creep misheard the name 'Tuerney' as 'Turkey' and chuckled lightly.
