Leann moves up to where the elemental is near her companions. She eyes it for a while, then holds out a hand. She waits to see if the elemental will just give the device back without a fight.
(What sort of rolls do you want here? Handle animal or soemthign else? If no language can be used, then persuasion is out...)
Ooc: locals would know that Chwinga are generally considered good luck. Fighting them would probably be a foreign idea to Chultans. One of the guides even mentioned 'receiving their blessings'.
Though they don't speak any languages, they seem able to communicate, albeit primitively, and may be persuaded.
Options: open to all players
1. Roll arcana or nature to learn more about these specific elementals. With advantage if you're from Chult
2. Roll persuasion (or intimidation) to try convincing it.
3. Earlier, someone asked about looking for books on the local flora and fauna. As it happens, Volo is in town promoting his new 'Guide to Monsters' available in hardcover for 50gp, it will tell you the same as successful checks from option 1, but will take 1 minute to use unless you specifically look for the creature beforehand, or spend several hours studying the book, in which case the minute is still spent, just well ahead of time. (Unnamed monsters from real word VGtM as well as most from ToA will be included.) {I missed this earlier, sorry}
Huarache lived in Chult for the first 12 years of his life; he's probably somewhat familiar with them. He's gonna roll Arcana to try to remember more about them.
A chwinga (pronounced cheh-WING-ah) is a tiny ele- mental spirit that lives in plants, rocks, and rivers far from civilization. Painfully shy, chwingas prefer to move about unseen. Their appearance is sometimes foreshadowed by cool breezes, the sweet smell of flowers, and dancing fireflies. Their mere presence makes a natural setting more lush and vibrant.
Chwingas sleep but don't require air, food, or drink. They don't have names and have no ability to speak. When a chwinga dies, it turns into a handful of flower petals, a cloud of pollen, a stone statuette resembling its former self, a marble of smooth stone. or a puddle of fresh water.
Chwingas shun most other creatures, but they find the trappings of civilization fascinating. They puzzle over creatures that wear armor, carry weapons, use tools, and cook food. If it takes a liking to a particular humanoid, a chwinga might use its cantrips to aid it, or might bestow a magical gift before departing.
Well, with all due respect to the Chwinga, it's taken the control thingy from us, and we need it back. Huarache has some rope; can he attempt to lasso the thing to nonviolently incapacitate it?
Shutorn draws on his experience traveling through Chult and other countries impersonating a religious miracle worker to see if he can recall that a wooden lotus left by a chwinga has some beneficial properties.
"Please do not attack it or try to capture it." Leann says with a glance to the others, continuing to hold her hand out, palm upwards. (As a native of the country I am just going to go with the fact she knows about these elementals.) She would then turn to the elemental and give it a friendly smile. "Would you please return the device?" She jingles her armor, longsword, and shield enticingly, trying to get the elemental to come check them out.
persuasion: 20
If it does she would pet it and make soothing sounds as she takes the device away, giving the elemental attention in return.
You see Yaren(who has caught up with the rest of the party) say "LISTEN TO ME." as he casts Suggestion on the Chwinga(WIS 15 save). His eyes turn completely black, and the crystal ball that he is holding starts to become enveloped in shadowy mist. He then says to the Chwinga: "You shall give us back the device that you have stolen from us, and never steal from us again."

He would know Chwinga sometimes leave supernatural charms.
The Chwinga responds positively to Leann at first, coming closer, but as she becomes more excuberant, he drops the shiny object and runs away and jumps into the nearest tree, literally diving into the trunk and disappearing within.
"Too bad." Leann says, with a frown to the elemental's disappearance. "Would have been a good sign if we could have befriended it." She shrugs though, bending down to pick up the control device. "Probably best make sure this isn't easily taken by another inquisitive creature..." She comments as she holds it in her hand.
"I'll make it an offer it can't resist." Yaren says before he casts Suggestion.

Can I try to determine what’s with the wooden lotus trinket?
Paladin - warforged - orange
I guess.if you keep your rope tied in lasso form on the outside of your pack you can try to rope it. If you want to do that, roll initiative.
Chwinga initiative: 23
On a short rest you can identify the properties of magical objects, or by use if the identify spell.

Ok, sorry, I didn't see that.

Yes, Huarache will try to lasso the thing with his rope.
Huarache's Initiative: 8
EDIT: I realized that that's if Huarache already had a lasso. He did not. Never mind, I think Leann's got a better idea anyway.

Did anyone buy a bag of holding? Also, would it work if it was in a bag of holding? Just something to think about.
