You can tell Radu has a bit of the gift of the gab and would sell his own mother if it would turn a profit. However, you do not discern that he is being untruthful about the attack or wanting to get to Vallaki before nightfall - he seems genuinely relieved that the party showed up when it did.
"Hmm, well nothing is better than making someone pay you a little gold. Especially the ones you don't like, " Dormark says to Bugbear walking up to the cart. He takes a look at the vehicle and see how much damage was done to it in the attack.
Dormark - The cart currently lies on it's side; one of the wheels sits broken, it's spokes splintered. It is unlikely that the cart will be useable unless a work around for the wheel is found.
Baern takes a look at the wheel and considers his newfound Mending spell, but sees that the spokes are in numerous pieces. "It could take all night to try to fix this. I think we should go too." He gives Galqarin an affirmative nod before looking around at the woods, wondering how many druids and blights are out there lurking.
Dormark stands up and moves toward Sandu and whispers, “Their right, wheels totally shot. Might not be a bad opportunity to earn some gold though. He not going to be able to haul much cargo by himself, but if he were to hire us...” Dormark leaves the question trail seeing how Sandu would use the information.
(Apologies for the absence. The school term has just finished and as a teacher I crashed for a few days.)
Ioben catches Dormark's remark and smiles. "I know could carry a few sacks, if it helps get things to where they are supposed to be going. Seeing as we are going in the same direction already. We would hate to leave our friend here alone on the road with his goods scattered everywhere now, wouldn't we?
Dormark stands up and moves toward Sandu and whispers, “Their right, wheels totally shot. Might not be a bad opportunity to earn some gold though. He not going to be able to haul much cargo by himself, but if he were to hire us...” Dormark leaves the question trail seeing how Sandu would use the information.
Sandu looked from the broken down cart to the merchant and back to the cart. The conversation so far did reveal one truth: the guy was stuck out here and either would have to walk back to Vallaki on his own and leave his goods behind or needed several hands to carry the merchandise alongside him.
He did arc an eyebrow in surprise at Dormark's remark though. The warforged styled himself as a cleric and were those not all about helping the poor, unfortunate souls of the world simply because it was the right thing to do? It gave Sandu a little bit more perspective on the metal man. If anything, he could appreciate the whole quid pro quo angle Dormark seemed to be going for. Sandu stepped forward.
'What's in it for us?'He asked Radu, too tired to bother with pleasantries. He looked at the goods scattered about on the ground. 'I mean, you're a merchant right? You should know nothing in this world comes for free.' He gave the merchant a weary smile. 'I wouldn't say no to a hot meal and a warm bed once we get to Vallaki, if you catch my drift.' Sandu glanced down and gave the dead horse a tentative poke with his big toe. 'You might recuperate some costs if you sell this to a butcher. My condolences, by the way.' Miss Esther inwardly screamed at him for being so callous after years of proper upbringing and getting smacked on the fingers for speaking out of turn but Sandu quietly smothered her voice with the mantle of tiredness. He was really wanting for a soft bed.
Valerie walks away when Sandu tries to ask for some benefits from the merchant. She does not think it fair to ask for anything from someone in need, but she does not want to confront him in the middle of the road.
Letting Sandu handle the talking with the merchant. Dormark moves back to Galqarin and says, "Hi my friend, I want to let you know we may be helping the merchant, I know you don't like him very much, but it is a necessity at this point. I'm trying to think of the future of the group, and you want to help your friends don't you? I will also help you with anything you need in the future, if you need me to. You have my oath has a cleric of Moradin.
Sandu - Radu's lips curl up in a cynical smile/sneer as you mention being reimbursed for assistance. Shrugging he says,"I'm glad to find meself in th' presence of a fellow businessman. I do so hate all these pleasantries, good ta see your real character come to th' surface. Don't you worry, Radu always remembers those that help him in his time of need."
He looks down at the dead horse at his feet,"Leave it 'ere. No use to no one now. Only th' desperate would eat it." Radu looks around at the rest of the group, he announces loudly, "Don't ye be worryin'. Y'all 'elp me with getting to Vallaki and y'all be paid. If ya grab what goods y'can I'd be mighty appreciative."
Radu focuses his attention on Sandu,"Does 20 gold pieces a person sound suitable? That'd be if y'help with some of me goods. I'd be much obliged." It's clear from his tone that he is being a little sarcastic, but not unkindly, it is clear that he fully expected to remunerate the party for assistance offered.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Sandu gave the man a kind grin in return. 'Twenty gold per person is more than reasonable.'
To add extra effect to his words, Sandu was the first to pick up some of the goods, though he did take effort to pick those that looked like they were among the lightest load. Aiding someone was one thing, being a pack mule another. As he picked up several things, he turned his attention once again to the dead animal on the road.
'Is there a way to dispose of that?'He nodded his head towards the carcass. 'If we're going to leave it here out in the open, I'm afraid it's going to attract those wolves. Or worse.' He did not specify what he considered worse but after travelling Barovia for less than a week, Sandu figured wolves might actually be the least dangerous things stalking the woods.
OOC: does taking a closer look at the goods require a check? If so: 20Investigation
A bit bitter over his inability to make simple purchases here in Barovia still, Baern comments "not that 20 gold will buy a bowl of stew around here, it seems." Continuing on in a more positive tone, however, he looks as Radu and says "but happy to help a friend in need all the same." "What's most valuable to carry?"
Whatever Radu prefers, Baern will heft as much as he can and prepare to continue the march to Vallaki.
Sandu - "Hmm... We could build a pyre of some variety - tha' will take some time though. Could be best ta leave it be... It's not like we can summon fire magically out of our hands an' incinerate the thing..."He raises an eyebrow to you, "Can we?"he says suspiciously.
Your initial search of Radu's goods does not reveal much other than the ordinary goods (adventuring gear) you would expect to find a merchant selling. As you sift through some of the items, hoping to find something of added value, you come across a bundle of cloth shoved into a now broken clay jug. As you pull the cloth from the jug you find a tiny item wrapped inside - a ring (see below).
Other than a pattern around the outside, you see no distinguishable markings - though you are pretty sure it has magical properties. Radu does not appear to be aware of your discovery as he is currently engaged with Baern and Galqarin.
Baern - "Thank ya, thank ya friend!"Radu says eagerly as he potters about shoving random items into backpacks as he goes; you notice him try and cram a number of the small items into the packs to make full use of the space. "Truth be told, I think a great deal will have to be left here. Hopefully get all the smaller valuable items though." He hands you a backpack full of odds and sods, tat really, which he has undoubtedly collected over the years. You do notice a relatively familiar looking, yet different, figurine to the one encountered at the Windmill, half sticking out of the backpack.
Galqarin - You notice Radu size you up - quite literally - removing a tape measure from inside his cloak and measuring the size of your shoulders and height when he believes you are not looking. "Yes.. yes.. I think we have just the thing for you." He totters over to the wagon and starts trying to desperately cram an item into a very large backpack - a loud CLANGING sound followed by many curse words come from where Radu went to. You find him desperately trying to drag the incredibly poorly wrapped item, half stuffed into a sack, from behind the wagon - it contains what appears to be parts (possibly the entirety of) a suit of Plate armour, which is painted burgundy and adorned with golden angelic motifs,"It... I... It's me most prized possession!" Radu looks at you sheepishly.
Ioben collects some of the goods that have scattered furthest from the cart and tries his best to get them into sack or bags of some kind that he can carry. As he does so he hears the clanging of metal and sees Radu carrying the bag over to Galqarin. "You know, the easiest way to get the armour to the city would be if Galqarin were to wear it. That would leave his hands free too to carry some smaller objects."
"Thank you Galqarin, your help is most appreciated," says Dormark he begins picking up anything he can carry. When he hears the plate armor fall he looks at it with interest , but swings his head side to side. "Putting it on him would be about the same type of burden as him carrying it. Plus if he is not strong enough it would be detrimental to his speed. it would be best to just let him carry it,' says Dormark continuing to gather items
Valerie sheaths her sword and shield away and picks up the goods as much as she can carry.
"From what happened recently on the road here, I think it would be wise to leave some people hand free so they can defend us when something got a jump on us." She turns to Ismark and Ireena. "Maybe you can be our protectors?"
Ioben - Radu initially looks at you perplexed before your words start to dawn on him. "Well... I mean... If he doesn't mind." His face lights up at the possibility of Galqarin donning the armour. "Just be careful with it, tha's all."
Valerie - Ismark nods, "Naturally. Though I hope that we may try and avoid trouble should it present itself next time?". Both Ireena and Ismark go to retrieve sacks / backpacks / anything they can reasonably carry.
