The sheet came up with. Did you want Ruby to be an Attacker or Defender? Link shows the difference. Will change her Fighting Style to reflect. Made her an Ex-Soldier to get the Athletics proficiency.
Nestled in the rocky foothills of the snow-capped Sword Mountains is the mining town of Phandalin, which consists of forty or fifty simple log buildings. Crumbling stone ruins surround the newer houses and shops, showing how this must have been a much larger town in centuries past.
Phandalin’s residents are quiet, hard-working folk who came from distant cities to eke out a life amid the harsh wilderness. They are farmers, stonecutters, blacksmiths, traders, prospectors, and children. The town has no walls and no garrison, but most of the adults keep weapons within easy reach in case the need for arms should arise.
Visitors are welcome here, particularly if they have coin to spend or news to share. The Stonehill Inn at the center of town offers modest lodging and meals. A couple of doors down from the inn, posted outside the townmaster’s hall, is a job board for adventurers.
You and Ruby first see the town from a stone bluff overlooking the area. The pleasant weather has made the travel near enjoyable, you have avoided any late spring showers. It has only been a few days since the last settlement. So you are not in need, but intrigued by a place neither of you have been to before. You decide to make your way down and see.
You are at the edges of the town when the smell of food comes from the inn. The sun is not quite overhead, but you reckon lunch is soon.
I think you should play Ruby. I would prefer defensive.
I smell the food and fallow it to the inn. realizing I probably don't have the money before I noticed the Job bored hoping they need something to go boom.
((Cool. I'm only expecting one post a day, though you can do more if you have the chance. I'm more likely to be on the forums at night.))
As you walk toward the board, you see a young man nailing three notices to it, a human. He has dark hair and plain clothes. He turns as he hears your approach, stopping in mid action. "Adventurers? Or seeking shelter from the dragon?"
"I'm sorry?" Ruby looks as if she is sure she heard wrong. "Dragon?"
He smiles as he turns back to his task. "You must not have been to the Inn yet. I work there, under old Tolben. He can tell you better than me. I stopped listening to the customers a while back. I'm not sure I even believe there is one. But coin is coin." When he's done, he steps back to let you read the notices. "Have you come from the north or the south?"
“Dwarf prospectors found ancient dwarven ruins in the mountains southwest of here, and have been working an archaeological dig seeking treasure and relics. They need to be warned that a white dragon has moved into the area. Take the warning to them, then return to Townmaster Harbin Wester to collect a reward of 50 gp.”
“A clan of reclusive rock gnomes resides in a small network of caves in the mountains to the southeast. The gnomes of Gnomengarde are known for their magical inventions, and they might have something with which to defeat the dragon. Get whatever you can from them. If you bring back something useful and don’t want to keep it for yourselves, Townmaster Harbin Wester will pay you 50 gp for it.”
“The local midwife — an acolyte of Chauntea named Adabra Gwynn — lives by herself in a stone windmill on the side of a hill a few miles south of Phandalin. With dragon sightings becoming more common, it’s not safe for her to be alone. Urge Adabra to return to Phandalin. Once she’s safe, visit Townmaster Harbin Wester to claim a reward of 25 gp.”
The man nods at her, than turns to you. "It's not a straight line, whichever way you go. Adabra's more east of here. Come talk to Tolben. He's there setting up for lunch." He points to the building behind the board. "Harbin's in there. Might have to knock awhile. And loud. And promise you're not a dragon."
Ruby follows you, standing off to the side. She cocks her head toward the door. "I don't hear anything." She walks up and presses her ear to it. "I think I hear something."
"Jobs? Jobs." You faintly hear the sounds of someone moving closer to the door. "Jobs are posted. Do them, prove it, then I'll pay you. It's all there. NEED PROOF!"
As you stand there, suddenly a woman runs up and pushes past the two of you and pounds on the door.
"HARBIN! Harbin come out and talk to me! HARBIN!"
She turns and looks at both of you. You see that she's a human, maybe mid 30s. Red hair with a streak of grey through it. Her shirt and pants are in shades of brown with metal cuffs on her wrists.
You head southeast-ish, wavering a bit but heading more or less that way. There's a small forest you pass through after two hours and as you break the cover you come upon two hills of varying height ahead of you.
Built on the slope of Umbrage Hill is an old stone windmill surrounded by an iron fence. A large winged monster with a spiky tail is trying to knock down the windmill’s front door. A woman appears in a second-floor window, waves at you, and yells, “A little help?!”

hmm. I wonder if we can stop by Adabra Gwynn on our way to the Dwarf prospectors or vica versa.
"We come from up the coast." Ruby replies.

Alright we will have to have a talk with him." I go up to knock on the door,
Ruby follows you, standing off to the side. She cocks her head toward the door. "I don't hear anything." She walks up and presses her ear to it. "I think I hear something."
I jiggle the handle
"IF YOU'RE A DRAGON, I AM THIN AND NOT TASTY!"
Ruby's eyes grow wide. "What by Moradin's anvil? Is he serious?" She goes to the door and pounds on it. "Townmaster? We need to speak to you."
"GO AWAY! What could you want?"
"We're two ex soldiers looking for information on posted jobs. We were told to seek your guidance. "
"Jobs? Jobs." You faintly hear the sounds of someone moving closer to the door. "Jobs are posted. Do them, prove it, then I'll pay you. It's all there. NEED PROOF!"

"He's in there, right? You were talking to him?"
"Why yes I do believe so" I step back a few to observe.
"I knew it. Harben!" She bangs a few more times. "Harben! Open this door!"
Ruby leans over to you. "Do we stick around or pick a job? I kinda want to know what's going on but..."
I do as well. Lets get Adabra Gwynn

I run towards the iron fence and crouch behind it. hoping it doesn't see me.
