Kanlos speaks quietly, trying not to be overheard by any others on the street, "Athreos's desires are simple, that those who die are honored and pay their way. These souls will not be able to rest while those in power deny them peace, their way must be paid, whether in coin or blood."
As a note you would all notice that the landowner-based shrines of the city are dedicated to Karametra, in hopes of earning a good harvest by appeasing her, and Purphoros, to soothe the volcano should it wake again.
Only the worker's shrines are dedicated to any of the other gods.
Io agrees with Kanlos and adds, "I had a vision where the souls of the dead are on the bank, waiting as they can't pay for passage. The River God wishes for atonement from those who left the workers to die in life and have also stranded them in the afterlife, unable to pass the river." He then says with annoyance and says, "My patience with them is running thin. I want to solve this without resorting to violence but any attempt at talking them into praying and seeking forgiveness or holding funeral rites is met with delegation. 'You do that for us!" Bah!"
Since Kassiopeia had gone straight to the Salty Swan she will spend her morning there, drinking tea and observing the locals and looking out for Khloe.
"The food and the company met my expectations exactly," Ritha replies to Khloë, making a face of disgust. "As expected, the leadership here is still as lazy and faithless as ever, tasking us with the request to further carry out the injustice on this island at the price of holding our vessel hostage,"she says, going on to explain Bésios's "offer" and the nightly "problems" some of them faced.
"But change does not have to come about through war,"she adds, telling Khloë of the reasonable landowners who support the workers' rights. "If there was some way to you could work with these individuals, then the task would be for us to carry out justice to those who are trying to subvert the will of the gods, without bringing more needless carnage to the innocent of this island. Would you be willing to parley with these men and women?"
Khloë sighs and nods to Ritha. "Yes we know of those who are friendly to our cause." She informs the group as she glances to the others to include them in her words. "If those had power enough to do something to change things it would have already been done I am afraid." She glances towards the harbor then and then back to the group. "What we plan is to blockade the port from the fleet of our island's trade ships, forcing the land owners here to listen to us and make the changes we require for fair wages and fair restitution for those who died here and could not pass on." She looks to the group. "Once the land owners realize that no ships will land here, unless they come to an agreement with us, I think they should be willing to talk. The problem will be doing so without them just tossing us all into the sea and maybe worse." She sighs again as she looks to the workers that sit at other tables in the tavern. "Most of those here cannot stand up against the thugs the land owners will have at their disposal. I am the only real warrior among the workers." She holds each of your eyes then for a moment. "If you stand with me, I believe the land owners will truly have to listen, as they will have a much harder time dealing with you and me, rather than just me."
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Xerronios moves forward, hands on weapons.
"Khloë , among the Leonine clans, leaders are chosen based on how they see to the needs of the entire clan, from the lowliest child the most wealthy and revered merchants and warriors. Of course some are able to contribute more to the clan's welfare than others, but none are less than any other under law, custom, or tradition. Any leader among the clans who treated the 'lowly'," and he imbued the word with all the scorn he could, "as less important to the clan than others would soon find himself or herself as leader no longer. I know this for it has happened. I cannot speak for the others, though I believe I know their answers, but I will stand with you, and count myself honored to do so."
As he spoke, he words took on a cadence and his voice began to resonate. It did not grow louder, just seemed to fill the room more fully.
Kanlos nods his agreement, "It might also be worthwhile to meet with some of these thugs, explain to them just how badly things could go for them if they continue to defy the gods on behalf of their soon-to-be repentant masters. If their muscles desert them, I doubt the nobles will have the will to take much of a stand."
Io adds, "I also wish to try to scare the nobles into repentance. Fear is a good motivator for people. Perhaps fear of impending doom will force them to change their ways."
Khloë gives the three who have spoken up a smile of appreciation. You would get the feeling she doesn't smile much, so it is a rare show of her feelings to be sure.
"Tomorrow morning the trade ships are suspected to arrive." She informs you. "We will have all of the fishing boats we have out in the water, making certain that the trade ships can not reach the harbor." She looks to each of you in turn. "This is the point I am certain will bring the land owners down to the harbor with their thugs, so I will be there to meet them. I do hope you stand there with me." She pauses a moment then nods her head. "I cannot stay here any longer, as my absence will surely have been noticed by now. I will meet you near the harbor tomorrow at dawn." With that she gets up and prepares to leave, though will answer any questions you have of her prior to doing so.
Ritha nods her agreement. "Then to the harbor at dawn." To the others, she gives a pained smile of relief. "Finally, a clear answer to a murky situation. We should certainly go in expecting a fight. Hired hands are generally not hired for their diplomacy or discerning judgement. I would suggest we try to catch them by surprise, and forgo the niceties this time."
Kanlos frowns thoughtfully for a moment, "We are to keep watch over the nobles as they sleep this night, aren't we? Perhaps we could use this opportunity to insist their men assist us, giving us the chance to either persuade them to stand aside tomorrow or spend the night being run ragged so they will be exhausted in the morning should it come to a fight."
Io says, "That is true... though perhaps we should talk to those nobles that are sympathetic. Perhaps we can convince them to talk to the others who are not. Nobility tends to not listen to those they deem to be not of their level so perhaps if other nobles talk to them, we might have them more willing to negotiate rather than battle."Again Io misses the fact that he is no longer in the position he used to be. That would have made this so much easier.
What do you guys do now? You are expected to watch over the nobles as they sleep tonight, as Kanlos suggested. You have some time before that, and I think you could likely do it in shifts, so not to all be exhausted for the morning events. for now though... Do you go and speak to the land owners you believe to be on the worker's side, or at least who are likely to listen to what you have to say? Do you go back to the ship? Something else?
Ritha will also speak with the pliable nobles, and help with the shifts watching over the sleeping lords. She would angle to get a "shift" watching a "reasonable" noble, on the thought that such a noble would not be a target of the gods' (or the peoples') wrath. She'd still work in shifts even if that wasn't possible, though she'd evidently be less than pleased about it.
Kanlso would shake his head at the mention of asking the other nobles to try and reason with their fellows, "You are of course welcome to do so, but I don't see the point. The accursed nobles haven't listened to them so far, why would they start now? But perhaps we can ask them to talk to them when their thugs are either defeated or stand down on their own, encourage them to realize they have no choice but to appease the gods."

Io would like to talk to the nobles who are sympathetic.
Anyone else going with Io?
