The dragon’s acid attack hits Spirit with such force that the aging panther is thrown against the rock wall and collapses. Spirit's motionless body lays there in the darkness, with fumes rising from the black fur. 

Aregarak, meanwhile, reaches the island and dry ground, where he is surrounded by the glittering treasure hoard of the dragon.  

What do I see in this pile of treasure?  Anything that might be useful? Or just coins and gems etc

There is a spear haft sticking out of the nearest treasure pile, within arm’s reach, and a shining shield about 20 feet away.

Yeah I suppose while I have time I'll see what I can find, and jam my pockets full of coins too

Preemptive 

Bel will sneak up behind the dragon while he is distracted and make jump as high on his back as possible sinking his sword into him. The hang on for dear life.

The dragon is engaged with Bel in the water, and knows exactly where he is. In fact, Bel is the only one engaged with the dragon. Bel understands that sneaking simply isn’t an option right now—he would have to create a distraction and find someplace to hide first.

knowing he doesn’t have a chance battling a dragon in water, Bel makes a swim for the nearest shore.

Bel makes it to shore with the dragon in close pursuit! 15 feet away is the shining shield that Aregarak has previously spotted, and all around lie piles of indiscriminately hoarded, glistening treasure and dwarven manufactured items.

Lana screams in agony and anger as she sees her beloved friend fall so violently she draws her bow back and fires an arrow quickly at the dragon

Lana’s arrow disappears into the water, where the dragon is seeking cover.

GB swoops down toward Lana.  He looks to Spirit and touches his chest, casting Mage Armor on himself.

He shouts at the dragon "GB may not like cat but wished it no harm.  What do you want dragon beast?"

Nightscale snorts out some water in a scaly chuckle. “You come into my home, armed, to pilfer my belongings? There will be no discussion while you are so armed, winged one. Leave or die.”

She plunges back below the surface of the lake, drenching Bel and Aregarak in a huge splash of water.
