"I am interested to see how well it works. I certainly wouldn't complain if we revisited that arcanist for more after this."Kal says, returning a grin.
"I'm partial to Velyra's idea. Even if there's no return portal, after seeing you all today, I'm confident we could fight our way out of the mines if need be."
Silthras snorts, "If the creature paralyzed us all, we would all now be dead. But..."
He looks at the others, and frowns. Where's Usul gone this time? "I am willing to put my fate into the hands of the gods, if that is the decision. We just need to ask the Gnome..."
“We’re right here to ask.”Usul says, smiling as he quietly sits in a corner waiting for the others to finish their work. “Though the portal likely does lead exactly were we need to go... we aren’t partial to going down with no return ticket. Who knows how deep, or how many of those things are down there... Are you thinking of going down today?”
"Well the entire reason we came out here was to go to the mines." Kal says, turning to face the gnome. "The man back at the inn said on the lowest level, down a natural tunnel one of their men found something that drove him mad. Here in this manor, we found a map pointing to the mines in this region, and in a journal, a diagram of the mines themselves with a point on the lowest floor highlighted."
"We can walk overland if it makes you more comfortable, but one way or either, we will have to go that deep into the mines."
"If we're going to walk, we should probably return to the inn for the day and wait out the night. Night comes quickly this time of year."
“Well, seems you’re all ready to jump through then.”Usul says, looking to the group. “Alright! No point wasting time eh? Shall we?” He then readies his weapons, and stands, trying to act brave.
"In the worst case, I'm sure I can always throw you to safe if the rest of us look to be overwhelmed." Kal unsheathes his sword, holding it out towards the cleric. "Could you give me some light? As I recall it was dark on the other side of that thing."
Silthras smiles and laughs, shaking his head, "I was hoping you'd say 'no'."
He glances around at his companions, "But, we have a decision." He takes a deapp breath, then continues. "To a quick and ignominious death!" he says, closing his fist and banging it on his breastplate in salute.
As they prepare their gear, Silthras ponders the future before speaking again. "We might need a plan" he says. "And I could do with a brief rest."
Velyra casts Light on Kal's sword once again, readying her shield as they prepare to head back into the basement.
"For a plan? Investigate that glow, and look for an entry point for the undead. If we can find where they're coming from, we blow that to smithereens. If we can't find an exact location, we blow that tunnel and head back up to the mine's exit."
Silthras frowns, "Or we look for more runes...so we don't have to fight to the surface...or perhaps we scout cautiously" he looks at Usul. "How attached are you to having Dib as a ... whatever that is? A rat might scout the dark corridors...we used to use those a lot. Especially in towns."
He turns back to Velyra, "As to blowing the tunnels...depending on the rock, mines can be quite unpredictable. Might bring the whole place down on ourselves. If we found more runes, then we might be able to escape before the mine collapses."
"However your want to do it once we're on the other side, I'll leave to you."Kal says. If they're going to rest, he'll sit on the basement steps while they wait. Muttering something to the symbol on his ring, it will let out a brief flash of blue as he draws power into himself.
(Harness Divine Power - You can expend a use of your Channel Divinity to fuel your spells. As a bonus action, you touch your holy symbol, utter a prayer, and regain one expended spell slot, which can be no higher than level 1. You regain all expended uses when you finish a long rest.)
Kal looks up towards the half-elf, and shrugs. "You were hesitant about going through in the first place, but conceded. We're saving a lot of time using the portal. If you wish to be more cautious once we're in the mines, I think that's fair. We'll have the time we saved by not walking there in the first place."
“It’s not so much what we are attached to him being,” Usul says, as Dib scampers up to his shoulder. “He is a weasel. Always has been. But when Mr. Kwiz showed us how to make him magic, he did also say that it would be possible to change him, though we’ve never tried.” Looking to his companion on his shoulder, he says a few things in Gnomish and then adds, “Perhaps now would be a good time to try?”
During the next hour, while the others rest and talk, Usul lights some incense and coal, and spends the time playing with Dib, giving him bites of food as the little creature scampers around the room, climbing over things and jumping around. Just as the incense is about to burn out, Dib jumps into Usul’s hand, and Usul throws him up into the air, where, in small flash of light and a pop, a tiny owl appears and flits up to the tallest bit of furniture looking around the room quietly.
Grinning to himself, Usul says to the group, “We’re ready!”
An elf owl - smallest owl in the world. Measuring about 13cm, and weighing in at only about 40g. 😃
Velyra watches the ritual with some interest, smiling as the tiny owl appears in the room. "I'm ready as well. Shall we try going all at once?" When the others are prepared, she will step up onto the platform with them, bracing for the inevitable strange feeling of being transported in such a manner.
At the end of his rest, Silthras offers a silent prayer to the gods and to his patron before looking to his companions and smiling, "I could have died in worse company" he says. Then his smile broadens, and he looks at Usul, and laughs "Well, except maybe for you!", then more quietly and seriously, "I'm glad the Maud's not here. That was a wise choice."
At the conclusion of the party's short rest, they gather around the strange platform, earlier discovered to be a teleportation mechanism of some kind. After a final nod of approval from each, you step up onto the dark stone and wait.
Underneath you, violet light erupts as the runes begin to glow bright. The tar-like liquid in the center of the platform bubbles over, washing over your feet and beginning to crawl up your legs. A strange feeling is invoked as it touches your skin, a feeling of cold and nothingness. As it consumes you entirely, your vision goes dark and all sense of perception vanishes. You feel weightless...
A sudden jarring breaks through the nothingness, followed by a panicked sensation of falling. With a jolt, your feet hit hard stone as you're deposited inside the rocky tunnel first explored by Dib. Light fills the space from Kal's sword, and you can see dim glowing light at the far end of the tunnel from around a corner. Behind you is the mound of rubble discovered by the weasel on his second trip, as well as the hole it leads up to. There is no sound in the tunnel, save your own breathing, and a faint drip echoing from somewhere far away.
Silthras looks at Kal, and whispers, "You may want to sheath that while Dib explores". He then crouches down and peers into the darkness around him and above him, hoping not to see anything untoward.

"What? Why?" Kal has Silthras' undivided attention.
