(Happy new year, all - I got pretty busy over the break, but I'm happy to continue!)
The great bird veers off course slightly, just as it seems as if it might fill the sky, and falls offshore some distance. As it connects, however, you all notice a swarm of black specks that have detached from the falling bird, circling over the city in a more controlled, gradual descent. Their triangular wings speak of something predatory, and from one of the lower flyers in the swarm you note red-glowing eyes.
"Oh, crap! I most certainly do not like the looks of those things," Korlis says urgently to the others. "We'd best get under cover, prepare to fight because it looks like we're in for it if those things come after us, maybe they're after someone or something else but, . . ."
OCC Where are we? And could you please post a link to the map on the campaign page? I can not seem to find the link anywhere. Probably just a 'well, duh!' moment but . . .
Can we make it to the alley just past Cymbril's Walk, to the east? (About 175-200 ft. SW of Sorynth's)
(Just posted a link to the map in the DM Public notes section of the campaign page. According to my reading of the posts, the party is currently located on Selduth street, having just turned onto it from Swords street and was hoping to travel directly East from there, cutting across a few urban neighborhoods before pushing North towards Sorynth's Silverware and the first possible stop for the lost shipment.)
A moment of focus, and you note their misshapen, yet strangely aerodynamic shapes. Where birds have feathers, these creatures wear a leathery skin, with a toothy maw in place of any form of beak.
For cover, several nearby alleys would provide cover from all but a close flyover, though doing so would drive you from the main road and your immediate path forward. We'll say that there is an alley across the road, to your immediate right, that passes narrowly between two larger buildings. Much closer and on your left is another similarly narrow alley, but from your vantage point you can already see that the alley spills out into a wide open courtyard that would offer only slightly more cover than you have now in the open on Selduth Street.
Well! Thanks all for your time and work in this idea - I'd like to think that it almost took flight into something cool, but unfortunately I hadn't planned on my fellow Co-DM to drop off for several weeks and not communicate with us upon his return. With that, I humbly return to you the use of your character and campaign slots, if you, like me, are non-premium members of this fine website. Best of luck to your future adventures!

Panic is a mechanism that strengthens the gene pool.

Are they birds, or something else?
[OOC] (Am I able to tell what kind of creature they are, and are some of them definitely coming towards us? Perception: 8)
Fenser aims his crossbow up towards the massing creatures, and then scans the immediate area for cover to get behind.
[And will take cover if he finds something suitable, if we are indeed under attack]
