Grigor studies the fox intently for a moment before turning his attention to the contents of the waterskins, which he will attempt to identify.
Nature: 8
Though his knowledge of nature proves little aid, Grigor's proficiency with alchemy and herbalism allow him to identify the contents of the waterskins as a rare spell potion (OOG: literally a spell-infused potion) which will grant the benefits of the infused spell to the imbiber. While the potion certainly radiates druidic magic, Grigor is unfortunstely unfamiliar with the specific spell in question. The best he can say is that all four waterskins are infused with the same spell and its magic feels beneficial. Perhaps someone versed in arcane magic could say more?
While the rest of the party is off looking for lost druids in the freezing wilderness, Raja spends several days in town indulging in his more mischievous urges. Choosing his mark with great insight, Raja pulls off a brilliant and intricate con, resulting in a larger than expected haul. However, in an effort to temporarily hide the loot, some of it was placed in the wrong location and lost to chance.

Intrigued by what he has learned and somewhat frustrated by his inability to identify the spell in question, Grigor goes in search of the scholar Elaric, hoping to enlist the Elf's aid in more fully identifying the potions and other items, as Elaric has proven amenable to helping the party in the past.

Elaric is surprisingly easy to spot, occupying the same corner table as before and apparently engaged in a heated - though, whispered - conversation with his small feline companion. Though he appears somewhat embarassed to have been caught arguing with a cat, the elf brightens at the slight mystery represented in identifying the potions. He readily identifies the infused spell in each potion as one of Guidance. Furthermore, his keen eyes having apparently taken in the goose feather, he asks if you need to know how to activate its seeking magic.
Grigor sees nothing out of the ordinary in the act of conversing with a cat, though he has never yet won an argument with one. He thanks Elaric for identifying the potions, and welcomes his assistance in learning how to use the goose feather, as well as any other information he is able to provide about the items the party has received.

Though he recognizes the nature of the magic suffusing the feather, he does not know its means of activation. With the aid of a ritual, he identifies the feather as a Tracking Feather. The sharpened end of this gilded goose feather can easily pierce skin. If the command word and the name of a location or person are given, the feather can be tossed into the air to hover at head level as it points in the direction of the target. The feather floats for 10 minutes before falling lazily to the ground; alternately, it can be snatched out of the air. As a secondary use, if the sharp end of the feather is dipped in the blood of a living creature or used to prick the skin of a living creature (requiring an attack roll), the feather develops a small red stain. Afterward, if activated, the feather remains in the air pointing toward the target creature and follows the user at head level. Soaking the feather in caustic matter for two hours removes the stain and ends this feature.
After the commotion dies down, Warren chimes in with his findings. "Well, it seems you all managed to find a nice prize," he says with a snort. "Thought I had a lead on a worthy quest, but it was just a merchant in need of a delivery boy. The man's name is Kadira - I would have turned him down, but he was half-panicked about his missing shipment. It seems like a good chance to earn some coin, if nothing else, but it looks like you've all got your own threat to put down. Still, any takers?"

Combining his prior scouting of the area and specialized knowledge of forested terrain with the map of Ellara's route, Wick is easily able to plot a route which, while covering the druid's most likely course, should also avoid various natural and animal hazards. As an interesting side note, this route will initially take the party past a location they have recently visited: the site of the winter wolf attack on the southwestern trade road.

Warren allows himself a slight grin at the revelation. "I suppose divine providence does appear at odd times. Looks like we'll have a chance to cleave two fiends with one blade. When do we leave?"
Depending upon what the party wants to do, the following information is currently available (and more may be gained by asking the DM specific questions):
The site of the wolf attack is several hours outside of town and just barely off the main road
Ellara's route - roundtrip - was due to take 10 days but, after 2 days, her apprentice felt a shift in the magic of the grove to which Ellara was strongly tied
Wick's route should allow the party to move at close to full speed (pending any encounters) and will pass near several small encampments and one remote outpost (trading and inn).
Griffen suggests stocking up on supplies (rations, flint and tinder, and some rope) before setting out
Good idea! All of these may be purchased for the prices listed in the PHB or for a 10% discount with a successful Persuasion check by the purchaser(s).
Griffen purchases 10 days of rations, a fresh flint and tinder, and a coil of rope.
He eyes up the merchant and says
"Me and my friends are headed out for a few days. Might be in need of a fair number of supplies if the price is right? Any chance we can get a discount?"
Grigor will purchase 4 days of rations, a flask of oil, and a steel mirror. In his excitement at the adventure before him, it does not cross his mind to attempt to negotiate a discount with the merchant.

The merchant - one of several in town - agrees to a 10% discount if Griffen and his friend purchase a total of 30 days of rations (his entire stock of rations).
