“will you allow me to accompany you? I hope that you will find my inclusion most helpful.”
Roc turns to A23, “Well after seeing you chop that hand off it would be quite stupid to turn away such help. Please come along.”
Roc says aloud to all. “We need to go about this smart. We have no proof that this man is the killer so we can go in blades out. Well, first we need to locate this caravan.”
Roc downs his drink.
”In years past I would say we could leave at first light but with the whole endless night thing we can leave whenever. There is no time like the present.... Shall we?”
Roc stands and begins to don his cold weather clothing.
Hlin turns to Lumen. "Let them come. I am too old and frail to face him mahself, but I have more gold than I need from mah time in the Sword Coast. Ain't got much use for it at this point. Tha better question is if you are willing to do anything fer your own home. Or do ya want to sit idle just like tha council?"
After listening to the party discuss their options, Hlin follows up: "Torg'stravels throughout the towns during business hours, but ain't got a set route. From what I can see, Sephek separates from them after nightfall. You'd have to ask tha townsmen directly for more information about the murders."
Will the party search for the caravan during daylight hours or head to Easthaven to search for clues about Sephek's activities?
After listening to Roc Errona states "Alright, let's find this caravan then. Where should we start? Hlin, where was the caravan last located and where is it heading?"
Lumen nods his head solemnly and turns from HIln. " I hope I might join you as well. I can provide light in these dark times, as well as... certain other benefits. Whether he is a follower of the lady of winter or not, I have a problem with what he is doing. "
"It was seen leaving this town of Bryn Shander this morning, dear." Hlin replies to Errona about the caravan. "But as I said before, Torg's route is unpredictable."
...
With this information, the party makes their way towards Easthaven. There are no signs of the caravan along the path, but they make it to Easthaven without incident. Being a trek of just over 7 hours by foot in the snow, it is nightfall by the time they arrive. The candlelight of townsmen can still be seen through the windows, and a pair of guards stands near the entrance of the town by flames to keep them warm.
Lumen smiles and winks at Roc as he makes his way to the front of the party.
" Recognizable as always I guess. Glad to see you are following protocol still. I have returned, I brought this group hoping they might help us on that matter of security. Relax, you are too stiff. The cold is bad enough without helping it get to you. " Lumen says in his deep rumbling voice.
Do I recognize the guard?
Lumen will proffer his empty hands and if allowed, use his magic to warm the man a bit.
Lumen recognizes the guard as a local, often seen at his post. As Lumen gets closer, the guard lowers his voice to a whisper. "The halfilng trapper's death is still being treated as an isolated case. Waylen and Arlaggath have yet to react. Yet, hysteria builds within the community." The guard slips a note to Lumen, before allowing the party to pass.
Walking into Easthaven is like stepping into Icewind Dale's past - the place is a living example of the booming town way of life that gripped all of Ten-Towns centuries ago. In the generations since, as other towns have settled into a predictable pattern of existence, Easthaven has continued to grow and reinvent itself. After the Eastway was paved, Easthaven evolved into a frontier traders' paradise, fueling the jealousy of its neighbors.
Easthaven's founders were thieves from the Duchy of Cape Velen, on a peninsula far to the south. They refused to kowtow to a powerful thieves' guild and were driven out. To this day, Easthaven honors its shady founders by declaring pickpocketing legal within the town limits - which explains the "Watch thy pouch!" signs posted in various local establishments.
Easthaven Friendliness: 2/3 Services: 3/3 Comfort: 3/3 Population: 750 Leaders: Speaker Danneth Waylen, respected for his humility and forthrightness. Captain Imdra Arlaggath commands the town's militia. Militia: Easthaven can muster up to 150 soldiers and 12 veterans. Heraldry: A snowflake at the top center of a steel-gray field, above a horizontal brown field that forms the left-hand base, and a dark blue field that forms the right-hand base; where they meet is a thin white tower. The brown field represents the Eastway, the tower represents the town, and the blue field is Lac Dinneshere. Sacrifice to Auril: Humanoid Rivals: Caer-Dineval, Caer-Konig

Roc turns to Lumen.
”Not a problem... Once we find quarters I can share this... Affliction that has taken me. If you can heal me I will owe you a great debt. Now... Let us hold on to our gold and weapons while we make our way.”
a23’s focus darts from subject to subject enthralled with the hustling energy of city life in easthaven.
“I have little experience with city dwelling civilians...they appear mostly unaware of each others presence. Perhaps they will be more accepting of outsiders..”
Roc uses his keen perception to watch for any pickpockets, but only counts three pairs of hands aside from his own. Townsmen are currently far too fearful to wander the streets this late at night, especially with the weather already as cold as it is. Despite the lifelessness outside, a23 can sense that the town itself is typically quite active. In fact, while more hushed than usual, chatter can be heard from the glowing windows as they pass by several houses.
Lumen leads the party to the White Lady Inn.
This musty old inn is named after a local legend known as the White Lady - a ghost rumored to walk on Lac Dinneshere, haunting the spot where her rich husband drowned.
The inn's sullen, elderly proprietor Bartaban greets the group upon their entrance. "Ah, hello Lumen. More lost souls needing rest? Rinaldo has already left to his quarters. He continues to go on about his planned Seance despite current events..."
(Rinaldo is a self-styled bard who is kept around to entertain guests, fond of plucking his fiddle while recounting the tale of the White Lady and her husband. Perhaps his event could be attended during another stay.)
In the meantime, the party is granted access to a room for the night. The letter that Lumen received from the guard begs to be opened.
During the span of time you have served our community, you have performed countless miracles. We cannot thank you enough, and hope that you will continue to bless us with your presence. However, evil still persists in these lands. Auril's darkness consumes us.
The speaker refuses us aid in our current plight, regardless of our intelligence linking the recent murder of our local trapper to similar deaths in surrounding towns. We received reports of the halfling's disappearance days ago. Upon investigating his home, we found no signs of breaking and entering - the door locked shut. This was not the only particular detail, as a dagger formed of ice lay in the man's chest. Despite an open flame in his furnace, the ice remain erect. A letter lay on the floor of the cabin, which we did not disclose to the public due to fears of increasing hysteria. It read:
"Even after drowning in the frozen wastes, water consume me, I did not meet death. I, who was born on the holiday of Midwinter, is blessed by the Frostmaiden. Those who defy her will perish by my blade. You cannot escape, as we are watching. One by one, thy will be done."
Combined reports have allowed us to link part of the description to Sephek Kaltro, a mariner whose ship was found sunken months ago off an island's coast. But he was not known to be violent, and was presumed to be dead after missing for so long. Neither is his day of birth on the holiday of Midwinter, according to our records. However, there have been rumors that he has been seen traveling with Torg's caravan as of late. Most perplexing...
You have come to know that we must take care of our own in this town. But you have proven throughout the years that you are one of us. We give you our utmost trust. Attached are the addresses of the trapper's home, as well as the one previously inhabited by Sephek. If you are to approach either, the guards will look the other way.
Lumen turns the paper over to find the addresses. The two locations are predictably along the Easthaven docks.
" We might not get to rest yet tonight after all. Suffice to say there have been some killings in Easthaven that seem similar to those happening in the other towns. There is a bit more info here on Sephek Kaltro."
Here he proffers the letter to any who would like to read it.
" It might be best to look into these locations tonight before someone gets in ahead of us."
”is excessive aggression and violent tendencies common among your people? inflicting war upon your enemies is one thing, but against your own people seems counter intuitive”
he shrugs awkwardly as if mimicking someone he once saw.
”I have much to learn of your ways”

"Greetings watcher of the night... Are you aware of any inns that may have vacancies this day?"
"HALT. DUE TO MATTERS OF SECURITY, NONE ARE TO ENTER NOR LEAVE AT THIS TIME." the guard replies.
However, he soon notices the presence of those behind Roc. "Ah, Elder Lumen! Welcome back, sir. Have you returned from your journey?"
He looks as if he wants to say more, but is hesitant.
Lumen smiles and winks at Roc as he makes his way to the front of the party.
