Walking around with the dogs as well, Komos sees yet another locked gate and sighs. His last attempt was not very successful. “There was really no one inside? Nor a key to open any of the doors?”That said, the dogs did need to be stabled for the evening, and the door to the Inn was still closed so they couldn’t be taken in there. “If there is no other way...” he says, and attempts to pick this lock as well. 22.
Kosmos gets to work on the lock on the garden door. The lock on this one is a bit more simple than the one that was on the front door. He is able to unlock it without issue. The door creak opens into a white garden covered in white snow. On the northern corner of the large garden is the stables where the horses and the carriage is supposed to be. There is an outhouse on the south corner of the garden as well. These doors don't seem to be locked though.
The stables contain the cart that is loaded with the payload they were to carry. Strangely though, the stables are empty otherwise. There are no horses or pack animals in the stables at all. There is a strange sense of wrongness here but you can't seem to put your finger on what exactly is odd about the stables other than the emptiness. You may roll Investigation to realize why this place feels wrong.

Leading the dogs in and trying to find them a nice place to stay warm, he looks around at the empty stables and tries to see if he can figure out what is out of the ordinary... other than everything... ((investigation 11))
While the other two manage the dogs, Varn goes upstairs and tries the key in each door until he finds the right one. "Really," he mumbles to himself, "not a single soul. Even sleeping in the forest is more lively."
Sniv follows Komos as he leads the dogs in and just looks around absently. He has an itching sensation at the back of his neck, but he can't quite figure out where it's coming from.

Komos and Sniv get to work securing the dogs in the stables. The hay and dried grass scattered across the floor rustle under the weight of their boots. All the while they can't seem to shake the feeling of wrongness that gnaws on them as they carry out the tasks. It takes a bit and after securing the dogs, they both slowly come to the realization of what it is that is off about the stable: the smell or rather, the lack there of. The stables of an inn as big as this one is bound to reek of excrement and body odor from the horses and other mounts. Though the absence of the horses can be explained by various different theories, what is much harder to explain is there is not even the slightest hint of horse smell. The stables are also quiet clean as well. To clean a place like this is a fairly simple task but to make all traces of horse smell vanish from the place as if there never were any horses to begin with... that is a task that much harder to do.
Varn tries the doors one by one, trying the set of room keys that was supposedly left for him and his party by Gundren. All the doors he tries appear locked until he opens three doors near the middle of the long hallway of the 2nd floor. The rooms are very similar to each other. The rooms are all furnished by a faded red carpet, a wooden dressing table that comes with a mirror, a wooden stool for sitting and, of course, a bed with burgundy bed sheets and blankets. One of the rooms have a window that is also shut and barred. There are lamps on small bedside tables though they are unlit and it is dark. However, the darkness was never much of an issue for kobolds. The bed is made; the room and its furniture are well kept and tidy. The room looks cozy. As Varn steps into the room, he gets a sudden feeling of being watched by something standing very close but the feeling passes almost as instantly and suddenly that it happened. Perhaps the tiredness is starting to get to him. It has been a long day of travel after all.

Sniv scrunches his nose up at his revelation and after sharing his observation with Komos and realizing that he noticed it too, he asks, "Is there any kind of magic that you know that could do this?" Meanwhile, he puts his mind to work to think of any divine or natural magic that could be responsible for this. Whether he comes up with anything or not, he motions for Komos to follow him back inside so that they can regroup with Varn.
"Not easily,”Komos replies “though with time certainly. There are spells to clean small areas, but it would be quite difficult to remove alltrace of life from a stables likes this. It also must have happened recently. That note Varn found was likely left only a few hours ago in the evening.” He then follows back to the Inn so they can get out of the cold and discuss in more comfort.
Though there are a number of spells that can achieve such an effect, none of which can be done in a matter of a couple hours. Higher level spells can manage such a thing but why would any spell caster expend 9th level spell slots to just clean out a stable like this? Natural magic was not the culprit as it would have a tendency to leave some trace of its use behind. No, something else is clearly afoot here.
Giving a shrug Sniv heads inside through the front door and glances around to look for Varn. Not seeing him, Sniv looks confused for a moment before stepping a bit deeper inside and calling out loudly, "Varn?"

“Have you found any one else here at all?” Komos asks. “The stables were... strangely empty... and clean. It seems nearly every trace of life has vanished from this place.” Komos then sniffs around the Inn looking to see if there is any sign of life at all (sans the note) inside, or if it’s like the stables.

Sniv just nods when Komos reveals their discovery to Varn and wanders his way up to the room that Varn is looking at. Noticing Varn on the bed, he calls to Varn as well, "Well at least we know we'll have a nice place to sleep tonight. Have you tried the key on any of the other rooms? Maybe it opens a secret door or something." Peeking further inside and noticing the tidiness he enters the room and takes a closer look at the bed and furniture, looking for a layer of dust that might betray that the room has been unused for a period of time or anything else to suggest the frequency of this room's usage.
The inside of the room smells a bit of burnt oil but that's not at all unexpected as there are lit lanterns hanging from the walls that are illuminating the place.
Varn there is no dust in the room. It's like its been cleaned this morning or maybe even in the evening, just like all inns.
"The keys opened two more bedrooms."Varn replies. "I didn't check any rooms after I found them." He tosses the keys to Sniv. "Here, you can check if you want to." It doesn't seem like the lack of people bothers Varn beyond not coming to greet him upon his arrial.
Sniv catches the key and looks to Komos, "I'm going to check out the other rooms. You coming?" Regardless of whether Komos comes with him, Sniv takes the key and tests it in each and every other door to make sure that it only opens the doors that Varn found.

Sniv tries the set of keys but unfortunately they only open the 3 rooms. These are most likely the keys to the rooms Gundren booked for the three.
DM: To keep better track of the keys you've found, I'll list it in the Public Notes section of the campaign. Be sure to check it out and keep an eye on it.
