Massive damage can kill you instantly. When damage reduces you to 0 hit points and there is damage remaining, you die if the remaining damage equals or exceeds your hit point maximum.
((Well thought it was a nightmare of some kind, not a mind flayed... and actually thought it was the brain I was stopping from leaving, then when that was under control I just didn’t think about it. *shrug*))
((I’m not sure Gorm was good enough to rise up! LoL And I think that dice thing happens more often when you end a post on a roll. I bet if you edited and added a word after the roll it would resolve itself...))
And with that, silence comes to the room for a moment. You hear a grunt from behind you Guardian where you see the red-headed human struggling against his bonds. It appears to just be him, Guardian, and Jeremiah left in the room. He looks over at both of you and says, "So um... who are you and why are you here? I would greatly appreciate being let down."
(Well I did not expect a half-tpk. I had been trying to not tell you outright what the creature's you were facing were since none of you would know what an intellect devourer or a mindflayer is. I shall try to make my posts a bit more obvious about what everything is in the future.)
Jeremiah settles back on his haunches as the last breath leaves Vi’s body. ‘Dammit...’ he says, tears pouring down his cheeks now. ‘Why did you have to leave us so soon?’ he absentmindedly pulls a pristine white handkerchief from his pocket and starts wiping his tears up, and the accompanying snot. (He’s proper ugly crying at this point)
Slowly he realises the captive has been speaking ‘Volo sent us. I assume you’re Floon?’ he asks, slowly reaching out to smooth Vi’s eyes closed before standing. He can’t bear to look at Gorm yet, he’s too angry.
((Yeah, Guardian has 1 hp left and is gonna try to wail on Gorm as soon as the narrator gets home so better run!))
(Am I about to have my first tpk? You guys are too kind to me. :P)
Thinking that Gorm has turned on the party Guardian attacks with his axe, hoping to give Jeremiah time to get away. "Run boy!" He yells.
Attack: 18 Damage: 11
Ouch!
Gorm falls. Permanently.
Instant Death

((Of course the roll was for max damage, ugh))
That sucks, I'm really sorry. :(
(OOC: Ouch, that’s a tough hit, unless Guardian chose to make it non-lethal damage?)
((No worries, it is what it is. Would be worse if it was a character I’d been playing years or something.. it’s fine.))
(Chasing after a mindflayer at level 1 was probably never going to end spectacularly well, to be fair! The joy of IC knowledge vs OOC knowledge!)

Looks like I better get this over with and see if I'm joining Gorm...
3rd death save, 2 failed so far: 9
huh, just to continue the suspense?? trying again:
12
Violet rises out of her body, above the scene.
Hey Gorm, fancy meeting you here...
((I’m not sure Gorm was good enough to rise up! LoL And I think that dice thing happens more often when you end a post on a roll. I bet if you edited and added a word after the roll it would resolve itself...))
(I always add an extra enter/carriage return which seems to help avoid that...)

((Naw, all good. Even if I know what they are I try to act on the characters knowledge, not mine... it’s fine, crap happens.))

"Yeah, I'm Floon. Volo sent you? I am so sorry this happened. This is all my fault." He says glancing over at the bodies across the room.
Guardian stands over Gorm. "I don't understand why he turned on us. What happened?" He asks, stunned at the turn of events.
