ooc: I remember that but he has hasn't told them to surrender so my question is did it leave him a loophole? Also, he tried to put his shield in and block an arrow, i.e. impose disadvantage on Nolla's attack. That would have been some indication he was charmed.
(OOC - It is a good question, he hasn't but there is an element of instruction in his words as well. Defend him, but also you could attempt to convince the others to stop fighting as well - even laying down their weapons. If they don't, his order was to kill.)
Thavriol's mind feels sluggish, like he's seeing the world through a veil, yet he knows what he must do. Turning his back on his spider-friend, he calls out in a ringing voice, "In the name of mighty Tyr, I forbid you to harm my friend!"
He stands ready to attack any who come near. If any shoot arrows or such at his friend, he will move to attack.
The creature nods and hisses, "Yesss. Stop your attacks and lay down your weapons. We only defended ourselves from intruders entering our home. If you leave your weapons, I can take you to our leader. I'm sure that he would be most happy to meet you." The creature 'smiles' though its small sharp, pointed teeth make the smile look a little unnerving.
As Nolla looses her arrow at the creature, the small spidery being ducks down behind Thavriol and the arrow sings past. It bares its tiny teeth and hisses in disgust, "Kill them, slave!"

(OOC - it's just a statement, not an ability. Like a PC responding to being hit by an enemy. And as Nolla had denied surrender, the instruction had already been said previously as well - kill them if they don't surrender. It's just flavour.)
Alix's beam streaks toward the small spidery creature. It hits and the force of the blow causes the creature to splatter, ichor spraying everywhere. As it dies, Thavriol feels its grasp on his mind release and he comes to his senses, falling to his hands and knees with his back covered in green innards.
"Thank you, Sienna, Alix...especially you, Alix. The thing had somehow snared my mind and it wanted me to attack you all if you didn't surrender and I was getting ready to do just that." The paladin appears a little shaken at the experience. "What next? Anyone have any ideas?"
As you look around the room, gathering yourselves up after your encounter, you notice that the crates all bear markings and labels of those at the farm you left not long ago. In all, you see a dozen crates of supplies and goods from the farm. This is the first part of Hurdig's request, recovering his supplies, though you don't see any simple means of returning them back to the farm such as a cart.

(You cannot ready an action, just so you know, since that would require using your reaction...)
ooc: I know.

Initiative Order: Nolla > Alix > Sienna > Thavriol > Guard Creatures
"I don't think so." Nolla says, stepping out, taking careful aim, and then sending another arrow at the thing. (Using Steady aim for advantage.)
Attack: 18 Damage: 16
(Man, really bad time to roll a 6 with advantage... lol.)
Nolla will step back behind the corner as her move action, though she cannot hide, as she has already used her bonus action.
As Nolla looses her arrow at the creature, the small spidery being ducks down behind Thavriol and the arrow sings past. It bares its tiny teeth and hisses in disgust, "Kill them, slave!"
(OOC - yeah, that was super unlucky!)
Initiative Order: Alix > Sienna > Thavriol > Guard Creatures > Nolla
ooc: Yes, I'm totally gaming the system :) but doesn't the spider have to wait for its next action to give Thavriol a command?

Frustrated by his earlier lack of success with Eldritch Blast Alix once again tries to strike the beast down with another of the purplish/black beams.
Attack: 20 Damage: 9

"Good work lad!" Sienna says looking at Alix, then she down to Thavriol
She then crouches down whispering a quiet song as she touches him on the back casting Cure Wounds
Healing: 10
Sienna Fulgurflash, Bard 3 - Child of the Stormy Sea - Alycron West Marches
Yian Do'Garon, Ranger 5 - Dragonfriend
"Where is the second one?" Nolla says as she peeks around the corner. "Keep your eyes open, it is likely around somewhere..."
"Over there somewhere" Sienna points down the tunnel "I made it run although I expected it to be back by now"

Nolla glances to Thavriol. "So what was up with you, acting as if these guys were our friends..." She frowns. "What happened?"
