Vorkaz looks at the stick and wonders aloud, "I wonder what strange things I could see with this." He tries to see if there are more of them and if so he will grab two to keep a hold of. He then follows while musing to himself about what had transpired.
The merchants pile onto their wagon and follow you a few hundred feet down the main road to establish a new campsite. You build yourselves a fire, careful not to include any of the mossy wood, which there seems to be an abundance of in this area. Vorkaz, you are easily able to collect a few pieces for yourself. While sharing a meal, you learn the following about the merchants:
The two men's names are Marith and Peter. They are currently transporting fine textiles and silks into Emberhall to sell to various tailors and craftsmen. Cass and Peter are siblings who have been running this business together for years. Anne is an old family friend who they regularly hire to protect them when they travel. Marith is a relatively new hire to help deal with increased demand, and has gotten along well with everyone.
Watch will come in four shifts. If you wish to have two people for each, three of the merchants will need to join you. Anne, Cass, and Peter all readily volunteer to take a shift.
Please let me know what order you will be taking watch in, and I'll fill in the blanks with NPCs. Also, please make a perception check for your watch.
Kaemgen can take 3rd watch with one of the travelers... Perception: 3
Kaemgen also asks generally to the group if this mossy naturally grows wild, naturally has this magical side effect or if this is something new. “I’m still concerned about whether this is just a local phenomenon or if someone is... I don’t even know what.”
Kaemgen, through asking around you gather that this isn't something they've encountered or heard of before. They've camped along this road plenty of times, though not necessarily in this exact spot.
Vorkaz nods to Alyyja and says, "I will join you on your watch."
Most of the evening Vorkaz spends taking notes on the strange wood in his books.
When he and Alyyja are on watch, he turns to her and asks, "So, you mentioned that the council woman save you and your families inn. What did she save them from?"
The rest of your companions head off to sleep as you settle in for your watch. The sun disappears completely over the horizon and soon your only source of light is the crackling fire. The night is crisp and clear, and you admittedly get a bit distracted gazing up at the different constellations. Nevertheless, your watch seems to go by without incident
Sael and Anne take second watch:
A crescent moon is rising in the cloudless sky when you are woken to take your watch. You feel comforted by the familiar constellations above - despite this new place and new people, at least one thing remains constant. Most of your watch passes without incident. Close to the end, a cart ridden by five or six cloaked figures passed down the road. As it approaches your camp, it stops, and you can barely pick up on a muttered conversation. After two or three minutes it moves on, and the last half hour of your watch goes without issue.
Kaemgen and Peter take third watch:
You are woken for your watch and greeted with a cloudless night, crescent moon high in the sky. Insects chirp faintly in the distance, and you find yourself trying to pinpoint their source rather than keeping an eye on the surroundings. A few fireflies rise from the bushes around you, only adding to your distraction. Nevertheless, the watch seems to go by without incident.
Alyyja and Vorkaz take fourth watch:
Most of the night passes and you are woken for your watch. The sky is cloudless, a crescent moon and hundreds of stars clearly visible. Alyyja, you are too caught up in conversation and the memories of your family it brings up to focus on your surroundings.
Vorkaz, please give me a perception check.
Feel free to play out any conversations or let me know any actions you wish to take during the night.
Kaemgen would have kept any conversation during watch brief and succinct. Perhaps a couple questions about what they’re transporting, from where to where, etc - light topics which shouldn’t draw one too far from paying attention to the surroundings.
Not that even an ex soldier is always as attentive as they should be...
Verbose as the Goliath is normally, while on watch and trying to ensure the others can get safe sleep he is calm and quiet. Gazing up at the stars a soft smile plays across his face as he mentally traces runes taught to him by his family. Supposedly his clan were descendant from Stone Giants, so the stars and the sky above were all an interesting dream to interpret. How much of that was true didn't really matter to him, his new reality was carving a path away from the tribe for now. It only mattered to get stronger, better equipment and survive.
Alyyja responds to Vorkaz, “It was more that she saved my parents, but the inn could have been in danger as well. An altercation broke out in the inn. During which my father was knocked unconscious and my mother had been stabbed. We were having difficulty quelling the uproar when Councilwoman Domine stepped in with her magics to put an end to it allowing me to get to my mother in time to keep her from bleeding to death.”
"That woman does have quite the knack for arriving in the nick of time doesn't she." Vorkaz spends most of the watch chatting with Alyyja and writing in his book to record thoughts on the recent days.
The night passes without further occurrence, and you are woken to a rising sun on another clear day. The merchants begin packing up the camp with practiced efficiency. Before setting off, Anne approached the group. “We can’t thank you enough for your help. I know it doesn’t seem like much, but I’m not sure how long we would have been delayed if you didn’t get us out of whatever stupor that moss put us in.”
Without further ado, the merchants settle into their cart and head off in the opposite direction. You begin making your way down the road again, and the day is pleasantly uneventful. The weather is fair, and you only occasionally pass by other travelers, none particularly interesting.
Feel free to state any actions you'd like to take while traveling.
As evening approaches, you spot what appears to be a small town on the horizon, sprawling around the base of two of the largest hills you've seen in the area. It's difficult to make out too many details from this distance, but none of the buildings seem particularly large or grandiose.
“So, a squid? Huh...” Kaemgen says at some point during the travels, more to break the monotony than anything else. “Like full squid? Or were you you but knew you were a squid? So squid thoughts or your thoughts?”
Kaemgen will make brief chatter with any passing travelers who wish to pause, mentioning the odd moss and what to watch for. Otherwise Kaemgen just keeps his eyes open and tries to stay alert. This seems like a harmless enough mission but if the council women is going to such extremes then it’s possible others are as well to prevent her.
