“Gods be with you…” the jarl almost sighs. Suddenly, he grabs the arm of one of his attendants. “Give them… potions…”
“My lord!” Lile pipes up. “Surely you’re in need of--”
“No questions. Take them.” He nods to the attendant, who nods back, and goes to grab a small wooden coffer. She opens it up, revealing six vials filled with shimmering red liquid. “Lile, Thorgren, go with,” Vrandr orders. “Magic. Indeed. Dark, and vile business. Not like the light… Audience… Yes… After my daughter.”
Thorgren nudges Lile. “You and the others take those potions. I can take a few more hits than most, so I’ll be fine.” Lile nods in response, and takes one of the vials. “We should go. The jarl needs his rest, and time is not on our side. Follow the coast for ten miles, right? Should be easy enough.” He turns to you all. “Are you ready?”
"Why wouldn't I be?" Ógleð takes a vial and turns toward the coast.
Aslaug takes the offered potion and tucks it into a pouch for easy access. She knew better than to leave aid out of reach.
"Are you ready?" Thorgren asked the group.
Aslaug offered a quick prayer to Dura, placing her hand over the hammer painted on her shoulder. The goddess had brought her here, now the goddess would protect her. "As the Jarl needs," Aslaug said loudly as she lifted her pack onto her back, ready to head out. As the group leaves she places herself near the front of the group, though not blazing the trail. Others would probably know the area better, or be more capable of searching for signs.
Fenwick mutters quietly to himself again "oooh, I don't know... I'm no adventurer...but a witch...magic...and a potion... would the Lady want me to go?" As the others leave the building Fenwick finally decides and takes the offered potion, tucking it away under his wool cloak.
Moving outside he spots the others and calls "wait, wait for me!" His short legs do their best to catch up. Out of breath already just over a matter of feet, Fenwick announces "I'm, I'm Fenwick Fiddlefen, at your service sirs, oh and ladies." He drops a few items on the ground as he tries to gather himself for a journey. "I'm no fighter, you see, bu... but you may need someone who knows a bit about magic on this here, ah, quest... thing..."
Picking up his items and shuffling along Fenwick remarks "oh!" and whistles. A few moments later an owl swoops down and lands on Fenwick's head. "Bah, yes yes I know you're upset. We don't have the proper materials to change you back. Maybe if you'd help on this quest we could earn some shields from the jarl for you. Yes, a quest." There's a pause and then he continues "nor have I." "Try not to worry, I'm scared enough for the both of us, but the Lady told us to be brave."
Lile nods. “The quickest way is easy enough: we follow the coastline until it rises up to a cliff, and atop that cliff is their hideout in a copse of trees.”
Thorgren shakes his head. “The jarl should have asked you to go with him the first time. This could have been avoided.”
“Be on guard on our way there,” Lile says. “The beasts have been acting oddly of late.”
OOC: Use this opportunity to introduce your characters to each other, and establish a marching order. Lile takes the front, and Thorgren brings up the rear.
"I'm Sigrún Hervör from the Dádýr tribe nomads of the Raudyr Woods. We are protector one of the four red deer of the world created by Fryr, god of Nature. I have come to Hedmark seeking poachers who attempted to take the scared deer and killed some of my tribe before two escaped our pursuit," Sigrún explains quite plainly without pretense or the knowledge possibly to hide her purpose. "I have come to the jarl for help identify these poachers," she adds holding up a bit of a tattered and blood stained banner. "Have any of you seen this banner before," she asks holding it out. It's about the size of a dish towel torn from a larger piece of embroidered cloth. It has two colors visible black and red with gold stars embroidered in the black portion. The rest of the banner is torn away. "They were southlanders from their speech and dress. It's still a wonder they escaped us," she adds with tension in her new before her face relaxes into its usual quizzical expression.
“But no living man am I! You look upon a woman...You stand between me and my lord and kin. Begone, if you be not deathless! For living or dark undead, I will smite you, if you touch him.” ― J.R.R. Tolkien, The Return of the King
"No, that sigil is unfamiliar to me, though I have no love for poachers myself. My family tends the herds for our clan, so more than a few poachers have stained my blades. I am Aslaug Hagennsdotter, of Brekka. Although my clan is strong, my calling was not with them, and the signs led me to Hedmark. I figure the Jarl is as good a person as any to start me on my path. Once I have his blessing, I will be able to travel my path unhindered." As she talks, Aslaug takes her place at the front of the party, just behind Lile. In her right hand, she carries her battleaxe. Her face is already marked with dark paint, as if she wept tar, and on her neck and shoulder, a hammer was roughly painted in blue, the symbol of Dura, Goddess of the Tempest. Her clothing was simple homespun and furs designed for practicality and warmth.
While introducing himself, Patrin looks closely at the remains of the banner, to see if he’s come across it previously..
(History: 21)
’I’m Patrin Kelson, my background doesn’t really matter... I’m here to speak with the Jarl to seek permission for my family, and some of our friends, to set up businesses and residences here in Hedmark, as a clear sign that slavery - in nature, if not in name - won’t be tolerated amongst his vassals.’
His look turns grim ‘Regardless of the Jarl’s position, once we’re done here, I’ll be paying some of those vassals a visit...’
He then remembers himself, and his company, and calms down. ‘Incidentally, I didn’t mean to suggest a suicidal self-confidence in with the Jarl, but he’s clearly in a bad way, and I wanted to give him hope. I know full well this will be a real challenge - but one that I am confident we’ll succeed at if we use our brains.’
You recognize this banner as belonging to the Black Sky clan, a group of brigands that operates in southern Nordland. You have only heard of them, and were given a description of their banner as something to watch out for as a warning because they do capture halflings to sell as slaves. You don't know much about their operations besides slavery, so why they were after one of the red stags is a mystery to you.
As he’s heading to his place in the middle of the group, suddenly he jerks in shock as he recalls why the banner fragment is familiar, and quickly turns back to Sigrún.
‘I’ve not seen this before, which is why I didn’t immediately recognise it, but I have heard of it. It belongs to the Black Sky Clan. A group of slavers and brigands operating in the South. Whenever you head down to make your acquaintance, I think I may come with you. They’ve traded in many of my people...,
You see his eyes flare golden with his anger, before returning to their usual hazel.
"Thank you. That is more than I knew yesterday. I was sure I would find out more if I sought out the jarl. I would be glad of the company and aid Patrin as much as I would give you aid to you in your quest," Sigrún replies to the halfling with a nod and smile. "Everyone should live free and suffer no fear of captivity," she adds.

"I am Ógleð, and battle is what I seek. Beyond that, I won't tell my story to strangers. I'm in Hedmark to offer my services as a warrior-poet to the jarl and visit the Proving Tower." Ógleð, a tall man with dark hair, takes a spot as close to the front as possible.
Fenwick takes up a spot in the back, potentially often falling behind and having to hustle to keep up. Occasionally he trips or drops something and Thorgren probably almost runs him over.
Although appearing nervous and fidgety, Fenwick is happy to introduce himself to any that did not hear him the first time. He is also proud to introduce his owl familiar, Hemming.
The seven of you, counting Lile and Thorgren, make your way to the front gate of the wooden palisade that surrounds the town of Hedmark. Two doormen stand at attention as you approach, and move to open the gate, either one pulling one of the doors inward. You walk out into the cool night air of the open road, with a clear path of tracks to follow in the snow.
“Lile. Up ahead. Something on the path. Possibly people.” Aslaug pitches her voice low to try and avoid it carrying too far. She doesn’t want to warn them that they have been seen if they intend to ambush.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
OOC: What time of day is it?
"Do they look armed," Sigrún asks in a low tone her hand tightening around her spear she also used as a staff.
