"Greetings Reverend,"Thariv says with a polite nod of the head and a flashing smile. "Thariv Lysander, former sea captain, current navigator of mysteries. Good to meet you."
He regards Celenwe for a moment and smiles again. "And you as well sister if I did not say so earlier. Where are my manners?"
He assumes the group will head outside soon and will take a further look at Luther's discovery.
As the rest of his companions finish introducing themselves, Ufeza respectfully says, "We were hoping we could be a help to the town with the issue of these roots and hoped we could discuss it with you."
The Abbot waits for you to complete your introductions before replying "we would appreciate all the help we can get in this dark hour." He strokes his beard while listening intensely how you liberated Elantra from the evil plant's grasp, mourning for the death of her son "Elijah was a helpful lad, never got in trouble, he will be sorely missed."
Once you have finished your recounting, Martellus adds "these roots you describe are very similar to what killed Katrina last week. And a black tree started growing from her grave not long after we buried her. It regrows overnight when we cut it down." Sister Celenwe nods behind the Abbot. "Perhaps you could help us by making sure it does not grow again. We will take care of Elantra meanwhile."
Ufeza says, “We will do all within our power. What methods have you tried? And what methods would you prohibit? We may not be too familiar with Lathander’s teaching and would not wish to accidentally offend or sacrilege.”
Zephyra steps forward listening intently to previous methods, after the abbot advises, she asks. "Do you know how to keep it from growing? I had some small effect reversing a seedling of the plant, but I do not think it is within my power to completely erradicate it."
"We have tried with axes and spraying the grave with holy water afterwards, but it still regrows overnight." Martellus replies, looking tired "you are allowed to try any means you consider effective, but I will ask you not to disturb any other grave."
Turning to Luther he adds "we have prayed to Lathander, but I'm just a lowly servant to our Morninglord. Mayhaps he has replied to us by guiding you here."
Zephyra gestures at the creeping roots that are moving towards another grave."What of those? As they are not at another grave yet, may we do what we can with those? To your recollection, where is the first place this happened?"
Luther waits to hear the response to Zephyra's question, then consults with the team: "Well I can light a torch and try burning the roots, that's all I'm really good for, apart from poking holes in things - for now. Does anyone know any different ways to damage them?"
Ufeza waits for a pause, very interested in hearing the answer to some good questions from Zephyra, before answering Luther, "I have some small arcane talent for self-defense, mostly centered around targeting the mind of my assailant. Since they don't seem to have much sentience I don't know how effective that would be, but using it would take such a small amount of effort that it's worth a shot. Given some time I could also try to detect if there is anything magical about them."
Thariv pauses for a moment, taking stock of the area to make sure his companions are out of his direct line.
"Stand back a bit,"he says. Then, holding the piece of coral tightly in his hand, he points his fist at the moving roots and unleashes an eerie sea-green blast of power at them. He pauses to see what effect it might have on the moving roots.
"The other thing we may want to try to do is see if we can follow these things back to some central source, if it's possible to detect them and follow them under the earth,"he suggests.
Heading back to the rain outside, you walk into the graveyard. The black tree is still growing out of the tomb, its grave marker lies down next to it. The tree has no leaves, and its roots are slowly crawling around, but not nearly as much as the ones you saw in Elantra's home.
Thariv's bolt hits the tree, taking out one of its branches. The moving roots do not react at all.
Zephyra concentrates hard and uses her druidcraft again in reverse. Hitting it over and over again with the cantrip several times to see if it has the same effect as on the seedling at the ends of the roots.
As Thariv tests out the defenses of the roots, Ufeza kneels nearby slowly channeling magical energy trying to identify if there is anything magical about the roots, tree, or surrounding area.

The cantrip has no effect against a tree this big.

After finishing the ritual, Ufeza sees a very faint black aura around the tree, suggesting that necromancy may be involved.
OOC: I'm just getting email notifications for the posts from two days ago.
Ufeza finishes the ritual and examines the faint aura around the tree and roots. “Looks like necromancy is powering these roots. No indication of of it’s a rural source. I think the big guy is right that it’s time to try some fire, though I’m out of torches. Anyone have any?”
OOC: I just got those same notifications too. They must have had some server issues or something.
(ooc I sent a ticket, its not getting fixed soon as it requires an overhaul of the system which would be time consuming and likely expensive, so just patience with it for now.)
Thariv nods. "I've got a torch and tinder,"he says in response to Ufeza. "Let's give it a try...oh how about lightning? I could try to strike the tree with lighting! Well, let's try this first--and is there any way we can follow that magic aura you've found "
He pauses, takes the torch and tinderbox from his pack, and lights it up. He creeps forward warily toward the roots and presses the burning flames into them, ready to jump back if need be.

OOC: ritual casting Detect Magic.
Blossom stands well back eyeing the efforts with interest and trepidation in equal measure. "Let's just try some fire already...", he huffs.
