Going closer to the tree Ufeza sees the roots crawling slower every moment, until they completely stop. It would seem that it has been cut off from the power that drove it.
OOC: you just finished all graves in Lathander's graveyard, where the black tree grows. There is another graveyard next to Kelemvor's temple, where you found the zombie child.
Feeling a tremendous amount of relief to be done with the battle, Zephyra eyes her injuries then looks about at the others. "Who needs healing? And should we check the other graveyard where the zombie child was found?"
Thariv looks about, scanning to make sure there are no more undead creatures rising from the ground. He breathes a sigh of relief, but stiffens slightly at Zephyra's question. "Aye," he says. "We should get to the other graveyard and plant seeds if need be."
As an afterthought, he adds: "I am fine at the moment."
Luther dabs at his cut lip where the zombie slammed into him and says "I'll be fine, nothing worth slowing us down for. Those things were more hardy than dangerous, it seems. I agree we should move on to the other cemetery and plant the seeds there, as fast as possible"
The half-orc sheathes his rapier and retrieves his bow. Seeing that the single arrow he fired has embedded itself deeply into a zombie, he writes it off.
Ufeza nods in satisfaction as the roots stop moving, then take a moment to dust soil off of his fur and clothes before rejoining the group, "I am fine, thanks to how well you all fought. And I agree, we should make haste back to the other graveyard and make it safe before the dead begin rising there as well."
He looks Zephyra over and notices the weathering she took, "Are you good? Do you need a moment?"
Blossom bends over and puts his hands on his knees for a second as he breathes in deeply. He looks around at the battle site and grunts in the direction of the others. "These... zombies, probably have family round here. I'll see if Lathander's lot want to give them a second burial..." With that, he trudges off to the temple to deliver the news.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
"Thank you Ufeza, I'll be ok in a minute." Smiling at him, appreciating the concern.
Zephyra reaches into her kit and pulls out bandages and quickly wraps her wounds. Healer's Feat 1d6+4+HD - > 9 Then watching for Blossom's return she glances at the arrow imbedded in the Zombie, wanders over and wiggles it loose presenting it to Luther. Grinning she shrugs and says, "Its a messy job, but saves the Lathander's clerics from having to do it. Better use in your bow. I have a feeling there's much more you'll have to aim at."
She looks close by at the edges of the graveyard for more useful herbs to add to her kit. Some interesting things other than these roots can be found in graveyards. survival24
Sister Celenwe answers the temple's door shortly after Blossoms knocks, a scroll in her hands. She seems disconcerted that a fight with undead happened right outside the temple walls without her noticing "I was so enthralled in my studies that didn't notice the commotion. I'll let abbot Martellus know at once." She turns to go back in, but stops for a moment before leaving and shyly asks"do you need some assistance? I mean, your group obviously has the fight under control, but I feel that I should ask anyway."
Waiting for Blossoms to return, Zephyra finds some purple wolfsbane flowers growing behind an unmarked gravestone.
Happy at such a find, Zephyra slips on gloves quickly, "Beautiful! As many of you are likely aware many plants are edible, but THISone stay far away from. Purple Wolfsbane or more commonly known as Monkshood. Every bit of the plant is poisonous, all the way to the root." She says as she digs out the root and rolls the whole plant up in herbal cloth, careful to separate out some of the seeds. "Sometimes its used for pain, but mostly for poison on weapons. I personally wouldn't use it for pain on anyone unless they were dying already and even then not likely. There's such a narrow window between therapeutic and deadly with this one. Just a little too much and quick, miserable death. I once met a amateur selling it to old women for their aches and pains. Terrible story that, but we've had enough terrible for one day." Glancing at the unmarked headstone. She moves to another marked one, planting and using her druidcraft to sprout a new plant. "It'll protect this little one from wolves though. They hate it." Then saying a quick prayer over the child's grave.
@DM Hopefully you'll indulge me on that one. Nice choice. Possibly a trap, but I know this one. If Zephyra wouldn't I can edit.
Luther accepts the slimy arrow from Zephyra with a smile and a nod, then wipes it clean on zombie rags before replacing it in his quiver. As Blossom tells Sister Celenwe about the battle that just occurred, the archer shakes his head clear. He'd been about to run off to the next fight, not stopping to think of the bigger picture. He'd always thought he was bound for leadership in the army, but was he just a grunt after all? He was good at what he did, he knew that - but he wanted to achieve more than simple sharpshooting.
Resolving to move on and learn from this, Luther decided that he needed to listen a lot more, especially to the wise companions around him. Make contact with the friendlies in this area, delegate them to secure the site, then move on to the next objective. "If it's not secure, it's not cleared" as his sergeant would say.
Thariv stands back with the others as Blossom talks to the priestess. He occasionally glances at the freshly seeded graves, just to make sure no nasty beings are arriving late to the party.
"So, if the undead launch another attack at the other graveyard, shall we use the same approach?" he suggests to the others. "Some plant seeds while some hold off those nasty suckers? And does anyone know a better way to put those zombies down. I don't understand everything about my powers, but they seemed to just shrug off many of our attacks. They're more resilient than the giant great white shark that once terrorized one of my ports of call."
Zephyra stands satisfied that the new plant is started and the gathered one secured. Listening as they speak about battle and how better to defeat them she considered the previous battle. "Did it seem to you that Blossom's attacks had a stronger affect than the others on the Skeletons? Maybe not with the Zombies, but with the skeletons. Though an impressive fighter, it seems his blunt attacks did much more to damage the bone. Being already dead did certainly give those Zombies an advantage that the Skeletons didn't seem to have." As she waits for Blossom's return, she continues to utilize druidcraft to make the still occupied graves look less trampled.
“At the very least, I think our tactics were sound. If the other graveyard is in a similar state I think we approach it in much the same manner.” Ufeza says, standing with the group waiting for Blossom to return.
”A positive development for us is we now have credibility with the priests of this temple. Should hopefully help the villagers trust us.”
Luther nods in agreement "Yes I think having fighters and planters worked well, and smashing those skeletons seemed to work better than poking them. As for the zombies? Our chaplains used to make light work of them, but as we've seen - hitting them enough times with anything brings them down eventually"
Feeling better for being able to share his experience and discuss tactics, Luther feels ready to move on to the next temple.
Sister Celenwe nods at Blossoms words and goes back inside to fetch the abbot.
The walk back to Kelemvor's temple is uneventful, but rain lightly starts falling again on your way there. The graveyard is empty and you don't notice any other zombies coming from the forest, leaving you free to plant seeds over each grave without hindrance.
As you are finishing the last grave Bonewits slowly walks into the graveyard, followed by a few other people "you've done it, I see" he says, wincing as he speaks "it's not over, of course. This here is the very fringe of the corruption. My samples and investigation lead me to believe that ther's something, some outside force, corrupting the ancient tree and using it to spread through the forest."
You notice that Liam, the inkeeper, is among the group. He seems to agree with what the druid is saying.
OOC: I assumed that Blossoms was using his claws the whole fight and tracked damage as if it were slashing damage.
OOC2: yes, everything has happened in the same busy day.
Zephyra sees many townspeople present and can't imagine what they must be suffering seeing their loved ones rise again.
"Bonewits, what can we do? How can we stop this? Lets not let all of your research and samples go to waste. Please tell us more. Perhaps we could sit and talk somewhere quickly, rest a brief while and learn all we can so we don't try things that have already been tried?" Hoping what she is saying will reassure the townspeople that any pause they take in action now will ultimately be for the better and not out of any lack of urgency to help.
(suggesting an hour of discussion - possibly counting as a short rest? If noone objects?)
@DM does this cover all of the grave spaces in town or is there another graveyard near the other church?

OOC: it makes sense to me that Zephyra (a druid and a healer) would know about wolfsbane and how to harvest it. Go for it!
