As my adventuring group and i were traveling through a massive dungeon we were having a conversation about mage hand and the biggest question that stumped me was if you cast mage hand with your left hand is the mage hand a left hand and the same for right or can you decide which hand you want the mage hand to be? If you have some sort of disfigured hands or if you are a aarakocra or a dragonborn is the hand a claw or does it have feathers or scales?
Generally, cosmetic effects of spells are left to the player (assuming the DM's approval, as always). I'd say the shape and... uh... thumb arrangement of the Mage Hand falls under that, so it should generally be whatever the caster wants.
This line of thought makes me curious about how the topic was brought up, though. :p
Did it include writing, or other fine manipulation where ambidexterity was called into question?
If it becomes important, I'd say that the hand doesn't have any penalties (or bonuses) on the actions it can take, so at the very least it's a hand that the caster finds comfortable to work with.
I beleive as long as it doesn't exceed the limitations of the spell in any way no issue with what the hand looks like. With the exception to the rule as described in the Arcane Trickster description.
A random thought I've had about Mage Hand is whether or not the hand can grab onto the caster as a means to avoid moving the hand with a separate action as the caster moves. THis would possibly enable the hand to move at higher speeds to if e.g. the caster is flying. Any thoughts?
