Hello everyone, hope this is the right place for this thread :)
I just tried the new striyhaven feats in the builder on Beyond and i have a question. The Initiate Feat says that i can use a spell once per long rest or per use of ANY of my own spell slots. Now if i have a spell that would deal more damage on a higher level, it still appears just on my 1st level spells, can i still use higher slots to deal more damage? Ans second question, do i first have to use the "free" spell before i could use my own higher lv spell slots?
I don't have Strixhaven. However, if the wording is the same as that for the feats in Tashas then they give you the spell castable once/day at the base level without using a spell slot as well as the ability to cast the spell using your own spell slots (which should include upcasting). You also don't need to use the free one before using spell slots as far as I know.
If you aren't seeing that functionality on the D&D Beyond character sheets then they may not have properly implemented it yet. You might want to check the threads on known issues to see if it is mentioned.

All the more reason why magic initiate needs an errata to bring the wording in line with these feats as well as with fey touched and shadow touched.
