Im thinking of having an Elder Oblex (or an Ancient oblex from "The Homebrewery") as the big end boss of one of my characters' personal story arcs. Like this would be the conclusion of this characaters whole story. And I am a little underwhelmed with the oblex' abilities. Mainly the ability to make simulacrums.
In the statblock it says "For all practical purposes, the simulacrum is the oblex" Which would mean that these simulacrums wouldn't be able to make their own attacks and such. Am I correct in assuming that?
An Oblex absorbs the memories of someone and its able to make simulacrum's of characters who's memories it has stolen. These simulacrum's are immune to damage and can only be "killed" if the Oblex dies or the teather between them is severed.
I was thinking of letting all these simulacrum's take an attack action of their own. Being able to make of the the oblex's Pseudopod attacks on their own initiative. Basically having the party fight copy's off of one of the player characters as it is being controlled by The Elder Oblex.
Would that be a thing that would be acceptable? its either that or im going to give it some other minions that will be fighting for it. I thought maybe modifying this particular thing about that ability could make the combat a whole lot more interesting.
Despite not being listed in the Oblex's stat block, creatures in general can use the equipment they hold. A simulacrum of a soldier that is holding a sword should be able to make an attack with that sword, benefit from armor it's wearing and a shield it is wielding, etc. The Monster Manual introduction provides a helpful table of monster Proficiency Bonuses based on CR, the Elder Oblex should have a +4. Absorbing "all the memories" of someone I would think should certainly allow that simulacrum to retain proficiency in the equipment it used in life, so I'd let a simulacrum swing a strength weapon at +6 to hit, weapon damage +2, or a finesse/ranged weapon at +7 to hit, weapon damage +3. This is quite a bit weaker than a Pseudopod, but might be in the Oblex's interest if its' simulacrum's cover isn't blown yet... and I'd let that weapon attack benefit from Multiattack as well, making two weapon attacks as part of an attack action and also an Eat Memories.
But I would not permit a Simulacrum to use any spells, feats, or other abilities of its orginal, however. That goes quite a bit beyond the general "creatures can use the equipment they can wield" premise, and requires too much fiddling to draw a line between abilities of the Oblex and of its individual Simulacra.
But I'm noticing now that you're thinking of having the Simulacra fight alongside the Oblex, instead of as the Oblex.
Yeah, that certainly isn't provided in its stat block, but should be doable with some minor tweaking to stat blocks. Maybe either have them share its HP pool and dissolve one at a time as the Oblex takes damage in 10-damage chunks, or give them seperate HP pools (~10-20?) and have the Oblex take half the damage they're dealt, or something else like that. Proliferating the battlefield with Simulacra that can't be killed until the entire Oblex is defeated and giving each of those Simulacra its own Attack action would be too strong by far , so if you're going to have them operate as minions, then you need to have a way for the party to clear them out like minions.
I recently DMed a Adult Oblex and I allowed the simulacrums to attack using the Oblex stats. They shared the HP of the main body and only allowed one simulacrum at a time and everything went fine.

What do you guys think?

I'm going to make this way harder than it needs to be.
