Quick question, but I can't find an answer anywhere...
Per the rules, you can use a higher level spell slot to cast a lower level spell, but is the opposite true?
In other words, could I expend three 1st level spell slots to cast one 3rd level spell? (Assuming, of course, that my character is high enough level to cast 3rd level spells)
There is also the sorcerer class feature of being able to turn spell slots into sorcery points and use those to buy a spell slot of a different level, which is like using lower level slots to cast a higher level spell, it's just not at a 1:1 ratio (it costs 5 levels worth of slots to buy 1 3rd-level slot, for example)

No, spell slots aren't interchangeable.
You can cast a 1st level spell with a spell slot of 1st level or higher, but you can't cast a 3rd level spell with spell slots of 2nd level or lower.

D&D Beyond FoundersNote that there is a variant optional rule for spell points in the Dungeon Master's Guide, which would accomplish a similar thing.
I've not tried it out myself.
