So I have this idea for a character. His mother is a mermaid, his father is a minotaur, but he got the human half of both and is just a human. He's interested in transmutation in order to make himself more like his parents (but only temporarily, he still likes being a human).
The 2 relatively low level options I can think of to transform a PC into a different creature are Wildshape and the Polymorph spell. A minotaur is a monstrosity, however, and merfolk are humanoids, and both of the abilities I mentioned are limited to beasts.
How can this be done without high level spells? (Before level 10 if possible)
The official Minotaur Race is humanoid, actually, and medium-sized, same as Merfolk (which isn't officially a race, probably since they can't move very well on land.)
You might be able to swing something with the Alter Self spell, if the DM is willing to allow both Change Appearance and either Aquatic Adaptation or Natural Weapons simultaneously to become either merfolk or minotaur for a time.

While that might be the case, I was actually referring to the monster, not the race, but my point still stands that you can't transform into humanoids.
As for your second suggestion, it is a possibility I hadn't considered before. Thanks for your input!
