This came up in a session and I think it was ok to do, but I wanted to be certain, and to clarify for if it happens again and I need to know what else I can do.
Long story short, I started my turn, moved away from the monster, which hit me with an opportunity attack, and then used my reaction to cast Hellish Rebuke, and then finished my movement away from the monster.
This left me havng cast 1 spell already on my turn, and with my Action and Bonus Action still to use.
Ultimately I had no spell slots left (warlock...) and cast Firebolt with my Action, but I am wondering whether it would have been legal for me to cast another leveled spell as my action or bonus action?
Also, was I correct that I could use my reaction like this, during my turn?
Since hellish rebuke is not a cantrip with a casting time of an action, you would not have been able to cast a bonus action spell on your turn. Other than that, any non-BA spell your spell slots and action economy allows is fair game.

Yes for your Action, no for your Bonus Action.

Ok brilliant, so I could do this then cast firebolt (phew!) but I could not have done this then cast magic stone (another spell I use often for this character).
Thanks! I will keep that in mind should it ever happen again! I'm glad that my tactic of not disengaging and then popping hellish rebuke on my turn was a valid ploy!
There is some Sage Advice that implies you can in fact cast a Bonus Action spell in the same turn you use your reaction.
The actual wording is " ou must use a bonus action on your turn to cast the spell, provided that you haven't already taken a bonus action this turn. You can't cast another spell during the same turn, except for a cantrip with a casting time of 1 action."
You can definitely do the following:
Cast a fireball, then counter someone else's attempt to counter it (as per Sage Advice).
But what if I use my Bonus Action to do a Misty Step? A literal reading of the Bonus Action says yes, you can cast a Counterspell to protect your Fireball, but you can NEVER do a Counterspell to protect your Misty.
That seems innane and incredibly stupid. The fact that Misty Step is easier to cast than Fireball means it cannot be Counterspelled? No. RAI is that you are allowed to counterspell when someone else attempts to counterspell your Misty Step.
Once you agree that yes, I can use Counterspell to protect my Misty Step, then it becomes obvious RAI that you are also allowed to use your own Action to cast a Booming Blade or other Cantrip.
Finally the fact that you can Misty Step, Counterspell, then Booming Blade, it also becomes obvious RAI that you can change the order to Booming Blade, Misty Step, then Countersepll.
Basically it may be RAW that you cannot Counterspell on a round that you use a Bonus Action Spell (as long as your normal action is a cantrip), it is clearly RAI that you can in fact Counterspell on a round that you use a Bonus Action Spell.
It is not clear what RAI is if you switch things around with Magic Stone as a Bonus Action and then attempt to cast another spell, such as say Catapult. But RAW you definitely can only cast a cantrip in the same round as you cast Magic Stone, despite both being cantrips.

I don't see why?

Where are you getting that conclusion?

I have no idea where you are getting support that RAI means you can cast Counterspell on the same turn as a Bonus Action spell. Sage Advice clarified exactly the opposite and I think you're giving confusing information to people.

I'm not following this could you elaborate? I understand the Bonus Action and Level Spell rule, but I'm just missing something from your post.

In order to be able to cast any spell as a Bonus Action, you cannot cast any other spell that turn with the exception of a Cantrip that has the casting time of one Action. Hellish Rebuke is a leveled spell with the casting time of a Reaction. It does not meet the exception required to allow a Bonus Action spell to be cast in the same turn. Therefore if you use Hellish Rebuke, you cannot cast a Bonus Action spell in that same turn.
However, you can use Hellish Rebuke and cast another spell with a casting time of one Action in the same turn. It is only a Bonus Action spell that is not allowed to be cast in the same turn as Hellish Rebuke.
Does that make sense?

Sort of. I'm going to go back to the opening post and see if I can take this information and apply it to the example.
Also, thank you. I appreciate you taking the time to provide a detailed explanation.

Let me try to break down my logic:
If you cast a bonus action spell on your turn, you can only cast cantrips with a casting time of an action for the rest of your turn
Conversely, if you cast a spell that is not a cantrip with a casting time of an action, you can no longer cast a bonus action spell on your turn
In the OP's example, they already cast hellish rebuke on their turn, which is a level 1 spell with a casting time of a reaction
Because hellish rebuke was cast, and it is not a cantrip with a casting time of an action, they can no longer cast a BA spell on their turn
Lastly, if no bonus action spell is cast, then the caster is free to cast whatever combination of spells on their turn that their action economy and spell slots allow

Thank you! Yours and Ophidimancer's explanation helped to clear up my confusion. I appreciate the detailed explanation.
To make things simple on your turn, if you cast a reaction or leveled spell, you can't cast a bonus action spell and if you cast a bonus action spell, you can't cast a reaction or leveled spell.

I think it was the Reaction that was throwing me if it was classified as a leveled spell casting or something all on its own like a Bonus Action.
