Im kind of new to dnd, and i cant figure out how to determine damage! In my dungeon masters guide, on everywebsite ive looked at, it says roll the attack and add the appropriate modifiers. I dont understand how you know what die you roll! There is nothing that has told me! Pls help
Alright, first and foremost Attack rolls and Damage rolls are two different things.
Attack roll: Determines whether you actually hit the creature or not.
Melee attack: You roll a d20 take the result and add it to your Proficiency Modifier and then add that to your Str or Dex modifier (dependent on weapon).
Ranged attack: You roll a d20 take the result and add it to your Proficiency Modifier and then add that to your Dex modifier
Spell attack: You would roll a d20 take the result and add it to your Proficiency Modifier and then add your spell casting modifier (Int/Wis/Cha determined by class)
Examples:
Greatsword: 10 (from the d20) + 2 (proficiency) + 3 (16 str) = 15 to hit
Shorsword: 10 (from the d20) + 2 (proficiency) + 3 (16 str) OR +3 (16 dex because of finesse) = 15 to hit
Longbow: 10 (from the d20) + 2 (proficiency) + 3 (16 dex) = 15 to hit
Firebolt: 10 (from the d20) + 2 (proficiency) + 3 (16 cha) = 15 to hit
Damage roll: Determines how much damage your attack does if successful.
Melee: Take the damage die associated to your weapon as indicated in the PHB and roll it. Take the result and add it to your Str or Dex modifier (dependent on weapon)
Ranged: Take the damage die associated to your weapon as indicated in the PHB and roll it. Take the result and add it to your Dex modifier
Spell: Take the damage die associated to your spell as indicated in the PHB and roll it. (some classes may add a modifier to the damage roll at later levels
Examples:
Shortsword: 4 (1d6 damage dice) + 3 (16 str) OR +3 (16 dex because of finesse) = 7 damage
The information for melee attack rolls and damage rolls is described on page 15 of the PBH under the title Building Bruenor, Step 5.
The information for Spell casting is described on each individual class that has the ability to cast spells, for example page 53 describes how a Bard's spell casting attack rolls are calculated.
Spell damage is described per individual spell in the Spell Descriptions portion of the book starting on page 211.
The ability to add a modifier to spell damage is listed on the individual class features, for example Warlock page 110 Agonizing Blast
