That's entirely up to your DM. Mechanically, you're probably looking at becoming a Reborn, but as to how that happens? There aren't any rules for that. That's your DM's territory.
There aren't really rules for this. Maybe the closest would be a modified Imprisonment with DM approval or just wish for it. But I doubt 17 levels in the wrong class is what you were asking for.
Depending on setting, you could replace body parts one at a time until you are little more than a brain in a mechanical jar. Should only take a few thousand gold pieces (maybe tens or hundreds of thousands depending on setting).
Or you could just ask your DM to make it part of your backstory and fit it into their world (if it fits). You'd be surprised how asking the person in charge of the narrative can solve narrative problems.
Yeah Warforged or Reborn. Reborn I think encourages the sort of "soul trapped" potential flavoring you're looking for, but the Warforged has some more literal mechanical mechanics in its features (though all of the Reborn's features can easily be skinned as mechanical).
Has anyone maybe a Warlock/Death domain Cleric Reborn named Deathlok? Miss that comic.
Well, playing as those races would be nice, but i already made the character and introduced them in my strixheaven campaign. I was thinking more of turning myself into one. the brain in a jar works quite well, but your body would still be your body. The imprisonment method works pretty well, and i like that, so i might use that unless a better thing crops up.

The magic jar spell can let you swap souls to different bodies. It’s a high level spell, so you’d have to do some explaining on how it happened, but it’s an option.
I need to know how to trap my own soul in a mechanical body permanently. I am planning to use it for my forge cleric.

If it’s just flavor, why not just be a warforged. Or really, just re-skin any race you like.

Yes, but the problem is, it can be dispelled.

Which is why I suggested becoming a Reborn. It's designed to be something you can become after character creation.
Ah, thank you.
