When imbibing a potion of giant strength, does your Strength stat change via an increase of your Strength modifier? Or does the base number itself increase, keeping the same modifier you've always had?
For example, let's say you have a Strength of 15 with a +2 modifier (giving you a total of 17). After taking a potion of hill giant strength (which increases your Strength to 21), would you keep the base 15 and then just make your modifier +6? Or would the base Strength become 19 (and add your normal +2 modifier, bringing it to 21). Or would the base Strength become 21 on its own, and you add your normal modifier (+2), effectively making your Strength 23? My assumption is that the potion gives you an increase via the modifier, but I just want to make sure.
The Strength score (15, in your case) and the Strength modifier (+2, in your case) are two completely separated numbers which must not be added together. The modifier tells you the bonus you have on attacks, checks and saving throws based on Strength.
If you take the portion of Hill Giant Strength, your Strength score is set to 21, which gives you a modifier of +5.
Ok, thanks for setting me straight there. Makes sense. I assume this new modifier that has been granted through the potion does not include any other additional modifiers granted through your class, gear, etc.? (So then the modifier could potentially be greater than +5?)

I could be, yes, but not all the magical effects stack together.
