I am currently working on a dnd world with modern technology. One of the cities i am creating is supposed to use magic to power the electricity needs for the city. I have been considering how to do that on a technical level and i'm struggling a little bit.
I see no way to channel the raw magic of the land into the electricity i need without having to use an active caster to manipulate the weave. And if i use casters then i'd need hundreds of high level magic users to satisfy the electricity need of a whole city, which seems like a huge waste of resources.
One possibility i was thinking of was using arcane batteries, charged with loads of energy several centuries before. Then i'd still have to have a caster, but way less of them because they'd be able to cast way more spells a day. But just having several highly charged arcane batteries lying around seems quite far fetched and a bit to deus ex machina -ish for me.
Another solution would be having a hombrew magic item, that just is able to channel magic into electricity, but that would somehow be even more far fetched than the idea before.
Does anyone have an idea of how to do this in a better way?

Thanks in advance,

It could be supported by magic item, eldritch generator or magical solar batteries convertor could be used to power cities, vehicules etc
Isn't that covered in Eberron?
Lightning elementals?
Depends on the size of the city.
A small town a huge elemental captive.
A larger town might need quite a few captives spread out.
Or a huge crystal 'linked' to the heart of the planet.(the real source of all magic)
