I have found too many different answers and I would love a simple yes or no from a dev or someone who works for WOTC. Can I use staff of the woodlands as my Druidic focus? Same with a Sorcerer, could I use staff of power as my arcane focus? I don’t want all the finagling, cause it can go either way, just a simple answer from someone who knows how it was created to be? Thank you
The PHB has base pricing for Druidic and Arcane Foci, but it doesn't establish any hard and fast rules about circumstances in which a staff wouldn't qualify as a focus. As such it makes sense that characters should be able to take existing staffs and and modify them for use as foci (carving runes into them, adding feathers, bits, of bone, crystals, etc).
A Druid can use any wooden staff as a Druidic Focus (Including a Staff of the Woodlands). They can also use a sprig of mistletoe, a yew wand, etc, but I'm focusing on staffs here because that seems to be the central focus of the OP.
A Sorcerer or Wizard can use any staff as an Arcane Focus (including a Staff of Power)
A Staff of the Woodlands could be used as an Arcane Focus for a Sorcerer or Wizard, but they would not be able to utilize its magical properties, because it requires a Druid to attune to it and use those properties. To a Sorcerer or Wizard, it would be no different than any other arcane focus staff.
Druidic Focus. A druidic focus might be a sprig of mistletoe or holly, a wand or scepter made of yew or another special wood, a staff drawn whole out of a living tree, or a totem object incorporating feathers, fur, bones, and teeth from sacred animals. A druid can use such an object as a spellcasting focus.
They can't use any old wooden staff, because the Druidic Focus (Wooden Staff) above costs 5GP. A druid can't use any old staff they pick up off the ground (it's not worth 5GP). A wizard can't use any rod or staff as a focus, it has to be a specially constructed item "designed to channel the power of arcane spells".
As for magic items, well, that's debated. Often.
Nothing in the books says that magic items can be used a spellcasting focus. The quote above does not say anything about magic items. If your magic staff of the woodlands is made out of yew or another special wood then it might count.
Then again, nothing in the books says that magic items cannot be used as a focus.
It seems to be widely accepted that every magic rod, staff and wand can be used as an focus of some kind but it's not universally accepted. Ask your GM.
In my game, for example, a staff of the woodland is a Druidic Focus but a staff of charming is not.
It is also debated as to whether or not using a magic item as a spellcasting focus requires attunement or not (because the rulebooks are silent on this). Again, ask your GM.
if you are the DM, then any damn thing you decide is cool.
