I (DM) have a player (Halfling Rogue/Ranger) who is interested in potentially using the Jump spell at close range to do additional damage to Medium and larger creatures (standing jump into headbutt or body slam, essentially). It seems like mechanically this would just be a basic Unarmed Attack, but for the creativity and flavor I feel like it should at least get bumped up to Improvised Weapon damage. After all, if a dead Goblin being swung like a club can do 1d4, I feel like an angry Halfling being launched upward by magic should be in the same metaphorical boat.
DMs, how would you rule on this and why? Curious to know the collective wisdom of the group.
This is the Rules & Games Mechanic forum, and the RAW answer is that it would just be some movement followed by a normal unarmed strike. That said, I think your idea of upgrading it to improvised weapon damage is super reasonable. It doesn't break the balance of the game for sure, and it's a fun little bonus for some creative imagery.
