Looking for some clarification on actions the spirit can take in a turn. The way I am reading it the spirit can both move and take an action I select (help, dash, dodge, attack, teleport, flame seed, etc..) if I use my bonus action to give it a command.
In my current campaign our GM has limited it to only a single thing. Move 30 OR teleport OR attack OR dodge, but not dash. I get that they do not want the fire spirit to be OP but it is so ****** it's hardly effective at this point.
Yeah, all creatures can move up to their speed every round unless there's a specific effect preventing them (such as being Restrained). There's no action associated with this movement. All creatures also get an Action every round, the Wildfire Spirit is limited to taking the Dodge action unless you use your bonus action to order it to take a different action, or if you're incapacitated, at which point it can act freely without waiting for instructions.

"Canon" is what's factual to D&D lore. "Cannon" is what you're going to be shot with if you keep getting the word wrong.
An additional question. GM seems to be limiting the spirit to do nothing at all unless I use my bonus action for control. As in it won't move unless I use my bonus action and it will sit there and dodge. I don't agree but they are adamant that the text doesn't state that it can move if I don't use the bonus action for control.
Your DM seems confused about what an action is. Moving is not an action. It can move freely. If you don’t tell it to do anything else, then it will use its action to take the dodge action. Or, you can use your bonus action to tell it to take some action other than dodge.

A Wildfire Spirit has a Speed of 30 ft., fly 30 ft. (hover) and the only action it takes on its turn is the Dodge action, unless you take a bonus action on your turn to command it to take another action, which means it would literally be unable to move at all if it couldn't move on it's own volution as the Dash action doesn't move you but gives extra movement for the current turn equals your speed.
So a Wildfire Spirit can freely move and Dodge unless you command it to take a different action or if you are incapacitated, which allow it to take any action of its choice, not just Dodge.

How are other GMs reading it?
Moving is not an action. It should be able to move plus an action.

I agree and thank you for that clarification.
