Our party is in the process of planning a small coup. Part of the plan involves forging a document or two. My rogue has proficiency in forgery kit, another player has access to illusory script. I think forgery kit is better, they want to use their spell. I think we both want to use our abilities, but which is the better option? I'm probably too close to it and can't assess well. What does everyone think, which is the better route? We have access to other documents and hand writing.
It lets you write a message other people can read you set, IE A shopping list to feed a cat when it actually says “save me, the guards drink to much and pass out at 3am”
“To you and any creatures you designate when you cast the spell, the writing appears normal, written in your hand, and conveys whatever meaning you intended when you wrote the text. To all others, the writing appears as if it were written in an unknown or magical script that is unintelligible. Alternatively, you can cause the writing to appear to be an entirely different message, written in a different hand and language, though the language must be one you know.”
That said for creativity and to pass a message to an alie inside I would let them do both give them advantage on it.
Personally I'd say Forger's Kit just because you're really stretching the intended purpose of Illusionary Script if you try to turn that bit about making the writing appear in a different hand into instant forgery.
Both elements don't exactly serve the same purpose. If you try to replicate existing document, some forging will be necessary and success won't be guaranteed. An ability check should be required either way. While with the spell you can cause the writing you did to appear to be an entirely different message, written in a different hand and language, though the language must be one you know, It doesn't reproduce existing handwriting and emblem with perfect accuracy.
Also the Forgery Kit is a permanent solution, while Illusory Script is temporary, lasting only 10 days or until dispelled.
Difficulty while using Forgery Kit suggest in the Xanathar's Guide to Everything that Mimic handwriting DC 15 and Duplicate a wax seal DC 20.
As DM i would use that as a starting point and try to involve both characters in some way.

So IS doesn’t really “forge” papers.
