Somehow the rule hasn't been posted in this thread yet:
From PHB Chapter 5: Equipment -> Starting Equipment:
When you create your character, you receive equipment based on a combination of your class and background. Alternatively, you can start with a number of gold pieces based on your class and spend them on items from the lists in this section.
Granted, while it's not the most relevant thing for the Rules section, I think it's at least somewhat common for a DM to give background items even if the players roll for gold.

Wait, I thought if you chose starting gold, you forfeit all equipment?
So
1. Choose class equipment + background equipment & good
Or
2. Roll for starting gold + background gold
Or have I been doing starting gold wrong?
If you use the optional rule from the Equipment section to spend coin on gear, you do not receive the starting equipment from your background.
