Somewhere I thought I saw a table that shows how much GP each class gets if they take the starting equipment at character creation. But I can't find that table back. Does it exist? If a new PC takes starting equipment only how much GP should they get be default?
In this edition it is actually the Background that gives you a starting amount of GP. I don't believe I have ever seen the table you mention in the PHB, and having a quick look at it I was unable to find one.

If the PC takes starting equipment, they gain GP from their background (usually 10gp). If they do not take starting equipment, they can roll for gp (or take the average) based on their class, and purchase their own starting equipment.
You can find the table (if you have PHB purchased) here, though DDB's sheet will automatically let you choose whether you'd like starting equipment, or prompt you the proper amount for your class to start with for GP. :)
But aren't those if you are going to roll for gold and then buy equipment yourself?
My understanding, and please correct me if I am wrong, is that you can roll for gold and buy equipment OR you can get starting equipment and the starting gold by background?
Take starting equipment for your class + any equipment & gold for your background.
Roll for gold for your class + any equipment & gold for your background.
In both cases, you are able to spend any extra gold you have prior to commencing play.
Was it a table showing the amount of gold you get off each background that you were after? The official sourcebooks don't have such a table. Most backgrounds are around the 10gp - 15gp region.
Okay, so let me see if I did this right (this is my first time creating a character for D&D, so apologies if it seems like I need you to spell it out for me). I created a human fighter with soldier background, and I chose "Comfortable (2GP)" under Description > Character Details > Lifestyle. Then I chose gold instead of equipment. It allowed me to randomize the roll for gold, and I ended up with 170 gold (nice!). So am I correct in my understanding that instead of getting fighter-centric equipment packages to choose from, I basically get a random amount of gold and that I am supposed to deduct the cost of each piece of equipment as I add it to my inventory, and then just keep whatever is left over as pocket money?
Correct, either take starting equipment and a set amount of gold from your background
OR
roll for gold and buy what you want. But yes, then deduct the cost of each item from that gold that you rolled.
This is correct, and the previous answer that you get the background's gold if you roll is incorrect. Rolling for gold by class replaces both sources of starting stuff.

I see it in backgrounds now. Thank you. It would be nice to have a table for easy reference.

That's correct, mostly.

Thanks for the clarification! The automation in the character builder is really helpful, but also a little confusing at times.
Or, you can do it the way I do for my campaigns..
You can take starting equipment OR 200gp to buy what you want. I find that 200 is a good number, and allows you to get a good start.

You have to roll for the gold and you would need to roll a 20 on a d20 for the 200 gold though.
Well, for AL you do, Otherwise it is as your DM says.
