monster attacks -> player uses reaction to cast spell with metamagic -> shard triggers allowing them to fly out of range of attack-> attack is nullified?
The magic item also says the flight doesn’t provide opportunity attacks as well, so I’m looking for input if the initial attack continues or if it’s lost?
If the trigger for the spell is being targeted by an attack, this might be possible. In practice, any spell you might want to use (Absorb Elements, Shield and Hellish Rebuke) would all trigger after you've already been hit or have taken damage. You could theoretically move out of range of Magic Missile, but Shield would've made you immune to that anyways.
This is the correct order. Monster attacks, the player senses the incoming attack and drops a metamagic enhanced reaction spell causing them to fly out of reach. Being hit is not the trigger for most of the reaction spells like Shield or Silvery Barbs, but Hellish Rebuke does require you to be damaged unfortunately.

IMHO, Earthdawn is still the best fantasy realm, Shadowrun is the best Sci-Fi realm, and Dark Sun is the best D&D realm.

For example for Shield: "Casting Time: 1 reaction, which you take when you are hit by an attack or targeted by the magic missile spell". So according to the Making an Attack rules:
3. Resolve the Attack. Make the attack roll, as detailed earlier in this chapter. On a hit, you roll damage unless the particular attack has rules that specify otherwise. Some attacks cause special effects in addition to or instead of damage.
Once you know you've been hit, you can decide to cast the spell to avoid rolling damage.
Argggg, I was looking at the pop up window in DnD Beyond which shows an asterisk but not the note. When you open the spell description, the note is in tiny print on the bottom. My shame.

Both Shield and Silvery Barbs trigger on hit.

Totally.
