IMHO 2023 double holding would be similar can of worms to but when it comes to Shillelagh it was drastically revised in terms of material components and spell effects though.
I wouldn't call adding cantrip scaling and the option for Force damage a drastic revision, nor would I call the dropping the weapon as a material componen
What would you call such numerous changes? The spell revision changed the Range, the Material Components, the Effect and Cantrip Upgrade.

“Drastic” is relative: one might judge that “True Strike” is an example of a cantrip which has been “drastically” changed.
I wouldn'tt just judge True Strike change as draftic but complete, the Range, Material spell component, Duration, Effect and Cantrip Upgrade makes it a completely different spell in almost all but name.
. . .If you pick up the cantrip via magic initiate, magical secrets, or some other class feature, you cannot use a focus to cast it because you don't have a feature that allows you to do so. . .
At least in the case of Magical Secrets you may have a feature that allows you to do it. College of Valor bards are allowed to use Simple or Martial Weapons as a spellcasting focus, and a quarterstaff is a Simple Melee Weapon.

I didn't consider that in my reply about Magical Secrets, so very good point!
