so ive own the main 3 5e books for a few years know but inv never real had the chance to actually play the game but iv recently gotten the one dnd start set and i just have to ask how compatible are 5e and one dnd iv'e heard they are but I'm sceptical how compatible are they?
edit: i mean how compatible are they are the rules trying to mess up each other ( apparently cant swear)as in is it a dumb idea to try and mix them because i have the 5e books and don't want to buy the new ones

The 2024 books are best thought of as an update to 5th Edition. How "compatible" they are is a complex question, because they consist of a lot of different interlocking parts, some of which have had really significant updates, while others have hardly changed at all. Mixing them is probably not a great idea, especially if you're new to the game, but using character options from the old books with classes from the new books should mostly work.
Just for the sake of clarity, "One D&D" is a placeholder name they used during the development process; the new books are an update to fifth edition, not a new edition, so they're technically still 5e.
You certainly don't have to, a lot of people are still playing with 2014 rules. There's no easy answer here; it will depend on what the group you're playing with wants to do.
ok got it il probably stick with the 2014 rules unless i realy like a new rule but im still using the starter set at least once i did spend money on it after all but anyway thanks

Where'd you get that "one dnd start set"?
As far as I know, a new Starter Set for the revised rules is coming in 2025: D&D Direct Recap: A Look at Two Forgotten Realms Books, a Dragon Anthology, and More
So the current Starter Set still uses the 2014 rules. The same for the Essentials Kit.

Dragons of Stormwreck Isle was written for use with the 2014 rules. It could probably be run with the 2024 rules without much extra effort, though.

Oh, ok. Thanks for your answer.
Dragons of Stormwreck Isle uses the 2014 rules, yes.

Our game is 2014 rules but allows 2024 character creation and spells along with 3rd party content. Working fine.
