One of my players was creating a character, and stumble upon a bowl proficiency. Naturally, they asked me about it and I had no answer. Why does it exist?
What Background is the character? Bowl could be part of Cook’s Utensils helping those proficient with such Artisan’s Tools to improve food’s flavor (DC 10), or detect spoiled or poisoned food (DC 15) when not used as a recipient for liquid or solid matter such as food, water, coins #tipjar
Can you provide more specifics on the build? You said they haven't chosen their background. Have they selected a class yet? What sources do they have turned on? Where are you seeing the option?
Is this pulling from partnered content? Maybe for some reason it's from the Lord of the Rings stuff.
Mmm, maybe, although I haven't purchased that book, and I disabled all sources and partnered content for the example to check if the mysterious "Bowls" still showed up in this case.
Since it's "bowls", not "bowl", and it's listed as a gaming set, it's probably referring to the game you play by rolling balls on a grassy field and trying to get the closest to a target ball. It's similar to bocce.
The Bowls is a 8 lb tool worth 1 sp from The Lord of the Rings™ Roleplaying game, i don't know what it's made of but that is pretty heavy or large.
Anyone with access to this material can tell what's the description?
Wait, Bowls is from LotR and doesn't have something to do with pipeweed?

The character has no background. If it is part of the cook’s utensils than why are they two separate proficiencies?

Uh, it's just a tool you can choose :O I think it's not tied to any specific Background, Class or Species.
As you said, Cook’s Utensils is a different selection in the dropdown menu.
Honestly, I'm not sure why "Bowls" is in the list. It's not included as a Tool in either the 2014 PHB or the 2024 PHB. Maybe from another book?
Are we sure this isn't a gaming set for the pass time which involves pins?
Is this pulling from partnered content? Maybe for some reason it's from the Lord of the Rings stuff.
Another use for Bowl could be to help do haircuts :)
The best part of this conversation is the idea of people who lack proficiency in bowls trying to do things such as eat soup.
